KEY GAME INFORMATION
TENNESSEE: Last season: 15-19, 6-12 SEC
Nickname: Volunteers
Coach: Rick Barnes
Conference: SEC
Who's gone: G Kevin Punter Jr., F Armani Moore, F Derek Reese, G Devon Baulkman
Who's back: G Robert Hubbs averaged 10.6 points per game and made 16 starts last season. F Admiral Schofield started 22 games last season and averaged 7.6 points and 4 rebounds. G Detrick Mostella had 8.4 points per game last season. G Shembari Phillips and F Kyle Alexander each made 11 starts last season.
Who's new: Tennessee has seven true freshmen as well as redshirt freshman G Lamonte Turner and Utah State graduate transfer F Lew Evans. The list of true freshmen includes Jordan Bone, Jordan Bowden, Jalen Johnson, Kwe Parker and walk-on Jacob Fleschman in the backcourt and John Fulkerson and Grant Williams in the frontcourt.
The Skinny: Banes believes his team has more talent and depth this season, even though the SEC media poll has Tennessee finishing 13th in the league. Tennessee needs Hubbs to produce a breakthrough senior season and must get big contributions from its freshman class.
LSU: Last season: 19-14.
Nickname: Tigers.
Coach: Johnny Jones.
Conference: Southeastern.
Who's gone: F Ben Simmons, G Keith Hornsby, G Tim Quarterman.
Who's back: G Antonio Blakeney. LSU's third-leading scorer last season at 12.6 points per game; F Craig Victor. Junior Forward averaged 11.5 points and 5.6 rebounds last season; G Brandon Sampson. Showed potential as a freshman who started five games.
Who's new: C-F Duop Reath. The 6-foot-10 junior college transfer is a rim protector on defense who can run the court and has some offensive skills as well. He provides an inside presence LSU lacked last season. Freshman G Skylar Mays and 6-6 F Wade Sims are Baton Rouge-area recruits who could make immediate contributions.
The Skinny: Expectations are low following the departure of Ben Simmons, the No. 1 overall NBA pick this summer. Jones can only hope team chemistry improves and that a number of players emerging from Simmons' shadow turn out to be better than everyone thought.
