KEY GAME INFORMATION
MINNESOTA: Last season: 15-17, lost to Rutgers in first round of Big Ten Tournament.
Nickname: Golden Gophers.
Coach: Richard Pitino.
Conference: Big Ten.
Who's gone: Point guard Nate Mason (graduated), center Reggie Lynch (overseas), backup shooting guard Jamir Harris (transferred), backup forward Davonte Fitzgerald (transferred), backup forward Bakary Konate (graduated), backup forward Gaston Diedhiou (graduated).
Who's back: Forward Jordan Murphy, who was named to the 20-player preseason All-Big Ten team, is the senior standout coming off career-best averages of 16.8 points and 11.3 rebounds per game. ... Starting forwards Amir Coffey (shoulder) and Eric Curry (knee) are healthy and primed for breakout years, after Coffey was limited to 18 games and Curry was out for the whole season. ... Point guard Isaiah Washington had a rocky freshman year, shooting just 24.1 percent from 3-point range. ... Shooting guard Dupree McBrayer gritted out an injury-influenced junior season, averaging 9.4 points per game. ... Forward Michael Hurt returns in a reserve role.
Who's new: Shooting guard Brock Stull is a fifth-year graduate transfer from Milwaukee who was the second-leading scorer for the Panthers last season. ... The three incoming freshmen are all from Minnesota, shooting guard Gabe Kalscheur, forward Jarvis Omersa and center Daniel Oturu. The 6-foot-10 Oturu was a consensus four-star recruit who helped lead Cretin-Derham Hall High School to the Class 4A state championship. ... Center Matz Stockman, a 7-foot native of Norway who sat out last season after transferring from Louisville, played three years for the Cardinals. ... Point guard Marcus Carr is another transfer who played one year at Pittsburgh but the NCAA has yet to rule on whether he'll be able to play immediately or have to redshirt this season.
The Skinny: Pitino's sixth year with the Gophers begins with a fresh start after the injury-ruined 2017-18 season that also included a midseason suspension of Lynch for alleged sexual assault. Mason's leadership and scoring touch at both the rim and from 3-point range will be dearly missed, with the erratic-but-exciting Washington in line to take over as the primary ball-handler. Curry and Oturu ought to help take some of the burden off Murphy around the basket. The Gophers could be one of the conference's surprises like two seasons ago when they reached their only NCAA Tournament under Pitino.
Expectations: Oddsmakers have Minnesota as a 200-1 long shot to win the NCAA Tournament. The Final Four is at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, less than 2 miles from campus. The Gophers were picked to finish ninth out of 14 teams in a preseason Big Ten media poll.
LOUISVILLE:
Coach: Chris Mack (first season).
Conference: Atlantic Coast.
Who's gone: Center Anas Mahmoud, guard Quentin Snider, forwards Deng Adel and Ray Spalding (NBA).
Who's back: Junior forward V.J. King (8.6 points per game) is the Cardinals' top returning scorer and looks to improve on offense and defense. Guards Dwayne Sutton and Darius Perry provided depth, and Perry will likely be the floor general. Six-foot-11 sophomore Malik Williams, a good perimeter shooter, looks to develop an inside game. Guard Ryan McMahon aims shoot more consistently and improve on defense. Forward Steven Enoch, a Connecticut transfer, is eligible to play and must find his role in the rotation. Sophomore forward Jordan Nwora looks to be more than a perimeter offensive threat.
Who's new: Guards Christen Cunningham (who was named a captain), Khwan Fore and forward Akoy Agau are three graduate transfers Mack signed to fill roster spots. Senior guard Will Rainey transferred from neighboring Spalding University but must sit out this season per NCAA rules.
The Skinny: Mack's late-spring arrival after nine seasons at Xavier left him scrambling to replace a handful of departures with grad transfers. He's also switching the defensive philosophy from pressing and trapping into a pack line philosophy, but with 10 scholarship players and a lack of height, Louisville must stay healthy.
Expectations: Oddsmakers have made the Cardinals a 120-1 longshot to win the national championship. Considering two scandals have cast a cloud over the program for the past three seasons, a controversy-free year of transition under Mack is an important step in the right direction.

Pitino family legacy colors Minnesota-Louisville matchup

They say the committee doesn't focus on matchups when it comes to putting together the NCAA Tournament field. Any meeting of two teams that might appear to be contrived by a those putting the bracket together is supposedly nothing more than a coincidence.

Well, it was one heck of a coincidence that led to Louisville earning the seventh seed in the East Region and getting a first-round date with 10th-seeded Minnesota on Thursday in Des Moines, Iowa.

That's because the Golden Gophers, who nabbed an at-large bid and are making just their second appearance in the past six seasons, are coached by Richard Pitino. The former Louisville assistant is the son of Rick Pitino, the former Louisville coach who was dismissed before last season because of his alleged involvement in and FBI probe into college basketball recruiting violations.

However, the younger Pitino insists the focus will be on the court.

"It's not going to be about me," Pitino. "I'm not going to be, 'It's revenge,' or anything like that. It's about our players, it's about this program. We worked really, really hard to put ourselves in position to be one of the 19 percent that gets to make the NCAA Tournament in college basketball."

The Golden Gophers (21-13) have been all over the map this season, playing well in their nonconference schedule before enduring a stretch of six losses in seven games late in Big Ten play.

However, Minnesota rebounded to knock off Purdue in the final week of the regular season and keep the Boilermakers from earning an outright conference championship. The Gophers beat Purdue again a week later in the conference tournament.

The Gophers are led by senior forward Jordan Murphy, who earned first-team All-Big Ten honors, as well as junior guard Amir Coffey, who scored 20 or more points in five straight games before getting only 14 in a loss to Michigan in the Big Ten tournament semifinals.

"All of us were excited to just make it to the tournament," Murphy told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "Just to make it this far this season knowing everything we've gone through, knowing the adversity we faced. ... I was really, really happy to be in."

Louisville (20-13) had its share of inconsistencies this season as well.

The Cardinals beat Michigan State in nonconference play before staring 7-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. However, Louisville lost seven of its final 10 regular-season games before going 1-1 in the conference tournament.

"We are where we are today," Louisville coach Chris Mack said. "There are teams that go into the NCAA Tournament on such a roll and they're home on Thursday night, and there's teams that have lost a few in a row down the stretch and nobody really believes in them and next thing you know they're in the Elite Eight. I've seen both sides of it."

Whichever path Louisville takes, the season will likely be declared a success after Rick Pitino's departure was followed by an NIT bid last season. Mack was hired after the 2017-18 season, and he hasn't taken long to get the Cardinals back in the national spotlight.

"I know our group is excited to play," Mack said. "Our guys have worked hard since the spring when we took over, and I'm glad they had this moment."
