KEY GAME INFORMATION
IOWA ST: Last season: 13-18
Nickname: Cyclones
Coach: Steve Prohm
Conference: Big 12
Who's gone: Guard Donovan Jackson, who averaged 15 points a game a year ago.
Who's back: Pretty much everyone else, led by sophomore guard Lindell Wigginton. He scored 16.7 points a game and was a first-team preseason All-Big 12 pick in 2017-18. Senior Nick Weiler-Babb averaged 11.3 points, 7 rebounds and 6.8 assists as a point guard, but he struggled with knee tendinitis toward the end of last season. Sophomore Cam Lard (12.6 points, 8.1 rebounds a game) is a candidate for a breakout season if he can stay out of trouble off the court.
Who's new: Four talented freshmen led by Chicago wing Talen Horton-Tucker, a top-50 recruit who will probably start. Watch out for freshman Tyrese Haliburton, a 6-foot-5 point guard who likely earned time in Prohm's tight rotations with a strong offseason.
The Skinny: The Cyclones should be back in the mix for the NCAA Tournament after an expected rebuilding season. There will be a lot of moving parts, but Iowa State also has enough talent to make some noise in the Big 12 and beyond.
Expectations: Oddsmakers have listed Iowa State's national title hopes at 225-to-1.
KANSAS: Last season: 31-8, lost to Villanova in Final Four
Nickname: Jayhawks
Coach: Bill Self
Conference: Big 12
Who's gone: PG Devonte Graham (NBA), PG Malik Newman (NBA), SG Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk (NBA), SG Clay Young, SF Sam Cunliffe (transfer to Evansville).
Who's back: SG Marcus Garrett averaged 4.1 points as a freshman last season; PF Silvio De Sousa joined Jayhawks at semester last season, providing crucial depth but he is out indefinitely amid eligibility questions; SG LaGerald Vick declared for NBA draft but returned to Kansas; C Udoka Azubuike averaged 13 points and seven boards last season; PF Mitch Lightfoot provided energy and depth inside.
Who's new: PG Charlie Moore transferred from California, where he averaged 12.2 points as a freshman; Twin brothers PF Dedric Lawson and SF K.J. Lawson transferred from Memphis, where Dedric averaged 19.2 points and 9.9 rebounds as a sophomore and K.J. averaged 12.3 points and 8.1 rebounds as a freshman; PG Quentin Grimes is a five-star prospect from The Woodlands, Texas; SG Devon Dotson is a five-star prospect from Charlotte, North Carolina; C David McCormack is a 6-foot-9 forward from Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia; SG Ochai Agbaji is a potential redshirt candidate from Kansas City, Missouri.
The Skinny: The Jayhawks lost their top three scorers from last season and could be even better this year. Dedric Lawson was often the best player on the floor in practice last year but had to redshirt alongside Moore and his brother, K.J. Those three should give the Jayhawks some veteran leadership alongside a handful of holdovers, headlined by Azubuike and Vick, and a recruiting class that was ranked in the top 10 nationally.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have Kansas at 17-2 to win the NCAA Tournament, the fourth-best odds behind Duke (5-1), Kentucky (11-2) and Gonzaga (15-2).
PREVIEW
No. 7 Kansas looks for payback in Iowa State rematch

A matchup against the team that handed Kansas a lopsided defeat could help the No. 7 Jayhawks quickly refocus.

Assuming, of course, they still aren't too dazed by the late rally they surrendered on Saturday.

Kansas (15-3, 4-2 Big 12) plays host to Iowa State (14-4, 4-2) on Monday in a clash between two of the four co-leaders atop the conference. The other two teams with 4-2 league marks -- Kansas State and Texas Tech -- meet on Tuesday.

The Jayhawks fell into that logjam on Saturday. They led last-place West Virginia by six points before failing to score over the final 2-plus minutes and losing 65-64 in Morgantown. A quick turnaround finds Kansas returning home to face Iowa State, which prevailed 77-60 over the Jayhawks in a Jan. 5 romp.

"We'll be OK," Kansas coach Bill Self said.

"You know, you can't get this one (at West Virginia) back, so you've got to put it in your rearview mirror, so to speak. Yeah, we'll be OK. We'll be excited to play Iowa State."

But the Jayhawks will have to play better in the clutch. Granted, they have won more close games than they have lost, claiming eight wins by seven points or less, although some of those outcomes didn't have to come down to the wire.

When asked about late-game gaffes, junior forward Dedric Lawson told the Lawrence Journal-World: "We do it at practice, too. We take it for granted in practice when we scrimmage against the (scout) team and they score at the end and we don't get stops. ... Guys have got to take that stuff seriously moving forward."

Big 12 rivals are certainly taking Lawson seriously.

Since the Jayhawks lost 7-foot center Udoka Azubuike (fractured wrist) and have continued to play without 6-9 Silvio De Sousa (eligibility inquiry), Lawson must battle underneath. Opponents have collapsed defenses realizing the Jayhawks struggle to shoot behind the arc.

Lawson continues to average a double-double (18.9 points, 10.7 rebounds), but the Memphis transfer has failed to reach his scoring average in six of the past seven games. Kansas is getting an unexpected offensive boost from sophomore guard Marcus Garrett, who has scored 35 points in the last two games to boost his season average to 7.2.

"And, he can guard anybody," Self said.

Iowa State presents a difficult challenge for defenders because several contributors are interchangeable.

The Cyclones are coming off a 72-59 win over Oklahoma State. They were led by the Big 12's leading scorer, Virginia transfer guard Marial Shayock, with 20 points. He is averaging 19.4 points for the season.

Not long after the final buzzer, coach Steve Prohm wasted no time issuing an advisory about Kansas.

"Them coming off a loss, I told our guys in the locker room that they're going to be as dialed up as ever," Prohm said. "They're going to be laser-focused and laser-sharp."

Iowa State's Cam Lard returned against Oklahoma State after missing two games with a sprained ankle, providing a strong inside presence. The sophomore forward contributed 12 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots in just 14 minutes.
