KEY GAME INFORMATION
WASHINGTON: Last season: 19-15, lost in second round of the NIT.
Nickname: Huskies.
Coach: Lorenzo Romar.
Conference: Pac-12.
Who's gone: G Andrew Andrews, G Dejounte Murray, F Marquese Chriss, F Donaven Dorsey.
Who's back: F Matisse Thybulle. Thybulle started all 34 games as a freshman, averaging 6.2 points and 3.2 rebounds. Expected to take on more of a scoring role this season. F Noah Dickerson. Dickerson played in 33 games as a freshman, averaging 7.5 points and 5.2 rebounds. C Malik Dime. Dime set a Washington record with 88 blocks last season and became a better offensive player as the season progressed. F Dominic Green. Green has received offseason buzz as the Huskies' most improved player.
Who's new: G Markelle Fultz. Perhaps the most decorated incoming freshman to ever arrive at Washington, Fultz is being counted on to be the Huskies' offensive leader from the start. F Sam Timmins. The 6-foot-10 freshman gives Washington additional size on the inside. F Matthew Atewe. The Auburn transfer should see significant minutes off the bench.
The Skinny: The Huskies have not made the NCAA Tournament since 2011. It's a cloud hanging over Romar and only an NCAA trip will quiet the growing dissatisfaction of fans wanting a change. Fultz is an incredible talent and may be able to get the Huskies to the NCAAs in likely his only season at Washington.
GONZAGA: Last season: 28-8, lost in the Sweet 16
Nickname: Bulldogs
Coach: Mark Few
Conference: West Coast
Who's gone: F Kyle Wiltjer; F Domantas Sabonis; G Kyle Dranginis
Who's back: C Przemek Karnowski returns from back injury that sidelined him most of last season; G Josh Perkins returns with average of 10.1 points and 4.1 assists per game.
Who's new: G Nigel Williams-Goss becomes eligible after transfer from Washington, where he averaged 15 points and 5 assists; G Jordan Mathews is a graduate transfer from California, where he averaged 13.5 points; F Johnathan Williams is a transfer from Missouri, where he averaged 11.9 points and 7 rebounds.
The Skinny: The Zags appear to have reloaded after losing NBA lottery pick Sabonis (17 points, 11.8 rebounds) and Wiltjer (20.4 points, 6.3 rebounds). They seek to extend a streak of 17 consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament.
PREVIEW
No. 8 Gonzaga resumes series with in-state rival Washington

Gonzaga completed one of its objectives against a Pac-12 opponent and fellow west coast power Arizona, ending a three-game losing streak to the Wildcats on Saturday in Los Angeles.

Now comes the opportunity for the No. 8 Bulldogs (8-0) to defeat another Pac-12 team and regional rival Washington (4-3) in a matchup at Gonzaga's McCarthey Athletic Center on Wednesday night.

The programs are separated by only 279 miles from Seattle to Spokane. Despite that, it is a long time coming for a home-and-home scheduling arrangement to be made.

This will be the first meeting at one of the home sites since the 2006-07 season. Washington leads the series 29-15 with the last encounter coming in the Bahamas last November as Gonzaga took away an 80-64 victory at the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Gonzaga makes a return trip to Seattle next season. The teams will then trade trips in the two years after that.

"We decided to (renew the series), so we're excited about doing it," Washington coach Lorenzo Romar said. "It's going to be a great, great atmosphere over there. They'll come back here the following year and I know it'll be a great atmosphere here. I always said that we would renew the series at some point. And now it's here."

Gonzaga coach Mark Few said the delay in resuming the series (which was finalized two years ago) had to do with the Bulldogs being more in demand playing in events featuring other top non-conference opponents. Romar said at first Washington looked for non-conference games with more national television exposure, but he believes now that the Bulldogs offer that.

"We always knew we would resume the series," Gonzaga coach Mark Few said. "But our schedules have been full the last few years. We had an opportunity (this season) and both teams were agreeable to playing.

"Our home-and-homes have been great (with Washington in the past). Certainly when we did play Washington the games were very high intensity, great crowds and great passion. We hope to have that same feeling with the next four years of the series."

Adding to the intrigue of the rivalry, is the matchup at point guard of former Washington player Nigel Williams-Goss against freshman NBA prospect Markelle Fultz of Washington.

Fultz, who has the potential to be the No. 1 pick overall in the 2017 draft, is averaging 22.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, 6.6 assists, 2.1 steals and 1.4 blocks. He is shooting 54 percent from the field and 48.1 percent from 3-point range. He has scored at least 20 points in all but two games.

"Tremendous talent who can always put his team in a good position," Few said of Fultz.

Williams-Goss led Washington in scoring and assists upon his departure following his sophomore season in 2014-15. He recently mentioned he transferred to Gonzaga to be part of a winning program and that he believed Washington did not prepare its players to be as successful as they could be.

Romar's response: "Obviously Gonzaga has gone to the tournament 17 straight years, so it's a good bet they're probably going to win and go to the tournament. Totally understand what he's saying. We also have to understand that the two years Nigel was here, especially his second year, was probably the worst two years that we've had."

Washington was 33-30 overall with a Pac-12 record of 14-22 when Williams-Goss was with the Huskies. The 14 conference wins were the lowest in a two-year period under Romar, who is in his 15th season as Washington's coach.

"We were probably as dysfunctional as we've been since we've been here," Romar said. "If you want to take that time and decide if Washington was the best place to be, it probably wasn't."
