KEY GAME INFORMATION
CLEMSON: Last season: 25-10, reached first Sweet 16 since 1997.
Nickname: Tigers.
Coach: Brad Brownell.
Conference: Atlantic Coast.
Who's gone: Shooting guard Gabe DeVoe, forwards Donte Grantham, forward Mark Donnal.
Who's back: Guard Marcquise Reed was the team's leading scorer who considered the NBA before coming back for senior season. Point guard Shelton Mitchell, like Reed, also tested his NBA prospect before returning to form one of the ACC's most experienced backcourts. Forward Elijah Thomas, who led the Tigers with 8.1 rebounds a game, is also back for his senior season. Clemson made it four-for-four in returning seniors when David Skara, a 6-foot-8 forward who is considered the Tigers' best defender, first chose to leave and play professionally in his native Croatia, then in the summer changed his mind and came back to college.
Who's new: 6-10 forward Javan White transferred from Oral Roberts and has two years left at Clemson as a graduate student. Freshman Trey Jemison is a 6-11 forward and tallest player on the Tigers.
The Skinny: The Tigers were a surprise last season in winning 11 ACC games to finish third in the league. They won't sneak up on anyone this year. But with four experienced seniors to lead the way, a return to the NCAA is expected.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have Clemson as long shot to win the NCAA Tournament at 120-1, on par with Arizona, Butler and Mississippi State.
GEORGIA: Last season: 18-15, 7-11 SEC, declined possible NIT bid.
Nickname: Bulldogs.
Coach: Tom Crean.
Conference: Southeastern Conference.
Who's gone: Coach Mark Fox, F Yante Maten, G Juwan Parker
Who's back: Forward Derek Ogbeide averaged 6.9 points and 6.2 rebounds and blocked 29 shots. William "Turtle" Jackson is the team's leading returning scorer at 8.4 points. The team's third returning starter is Rayshaun Hammonds, who showed promise as a freshman last season while averaging 6.7 points and 4.9 rebounds. Hammonds had 13 points and nine rebounds in Georgia's 56-54 exhibition win at UAB last week. Guard Tyree Crump averaged 6.5 points last season. An emerging player to watch is 6-foot-11 sophomore Nicolas Claxton, whose skills and overall athleticism immediately caught Crean's attention. Claxton averaged 3.9 points and 3.9 assists and was second on the team with 42 blocks.
Who's new: Freshman guard Ignas Sargiunas, from Lithuania, started in the exhibition against UAB, though Crean said he has no set lineup yet. Another freshman guard, JoJo Toppin, won the team's dunk contest at its "Stegmania" preview event for fans. Freshman forward Amanze Ngumezi (6-9, 245) provides needed size on a front line that will miss the presence of scoring and rebounding leader Maten, who is now on a two-way contract with the Miami Heat and its G-League Sioux Falls affiliate.
The Skinny: Georgia made only two NCAA Tournament appearances in nine years with Fox. Crean, who was 356-231 in 18 seasons at Marquette and Indiana from 1999-2017, was given a six-year, $16 million contract to make the Bulldogs a postseason presence.
Expectations: The Bulldogs were picked 13th of 14 teams in the SEC by media. Las Vegas oddsmakers have Georgia as an extreme long shot to win the NCAA Tournament at 350-1.
PREVIEW
No. 16 Clemson escapes Akron, faces Georgia next

Clemson on Monday had its first close call of the young season.

Next up: The Tigers get their biggest test yet.

No. 16 Clemson will face Georgia on Tuesday in the semifinals of the Cayman Islands Classic.

The Tigers (4-0) built a 15-point second-half lead against Akron before the Zips found their shooting touch from deep and cut Clemson's lead to four in the final five minutes.

But the Tigers' Marcquise Reed scored five straight points and Shelton Mitchell made two free throws to put it out of reach as Clemson held off Akron 72-69.

Reed, the Tigers' leading scorer at 17.3 points per game, and Mitchell combined for 38 in the win.

"I really like the way our guards have been playing," Brownell said of Reed and Mitchell. "They're very experienced guys who have been in a lot of big games for us."

Georgia (3-1) had no such drama with its first-round opponent, Illinois State.

The Bulldogs raced to a 16-2 lead, led by as many as 24 in the first half and cruised to an 80-68 win over the Redbirds.

Sophomore forward Rayshaun Hammonds scored a career-high 31 points to lead Georgia.

The Bulldogs had just three steals and four blocked shots but held but held Illinois State to 37.5 percent shooting.

Georgia coach Tom Crean has been looking for more intensity from his defense and said he wants his team to use its length.

"We don't use it consistently well, and we've got to do that," he told The Red & Black website. "It's not just creating the deflections, getting the steals, getting the blocked shots. It's distorting the view, it's challenging the shots, it's not giving a free look at the rim, it's defending the post up better by putting more ball pressure on them."

Against Clemson, that will mean focusing on Reed and Mitchell, who account for more than 30 points and seven assists a game.

"You want your team to play pressure defense and be active," Crean said "You can't stand there and just be passive and watch it as a coach. I never have. I want to have fun too, man. I know it's my job, but I want to have fun."

The Bulldogs entered the tournament with wins over Savannah State (110-76) and Sam Houston State (75-64) sandwiching an 81-77 loss to Temple in Crean's first three games as Georgia coach.

Clemson also played Sam Houston State earlier this month, beating the Bearkats 74-59.
