| | | LOUISVILLE: Despite losing three starters, Rick Pitino will once again have a team talented enough to compete for a national title. Junior PF Montrezl Harrell (14.0 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 1.3 BPG) is one of the top returning post players in the country. Last season, he took a big step forward, developing nice touch around the basket. He is a terrific athlete who can change a game on both sides of the ball. The Cardinals will once again have a loaded backcourt, as PG Chris Jones (10.2 PPG, 2.9 APG) and SG Terry Rozier (7.0 PPG, 3.1 RPG, 37% threes) are the two star players. Jones is great at getting to the basket, where he uses his strength to finish at the rim. Rozier had a huge summer, including competing at the LeBron James Skills Academy, where many people at the camp said Rozier was the most impressive player there. With Russ Smith gone, Rozier will play a much bigger role on the team. Swingman Wayne Blackshear (8.2 PPG, 3.1 RPG, 40% threes) will be expected to take on more of a scoring load. | | FLORIDA ST: The Seminoles struggled last season, but showed some potential last March when they reached the NIT Final Four. Florida State brings back its starting backcourt, led by SG Aaron Thomas (14.5 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 37% threes). Thomas is a difficult matchup because he can use his quickness to drive around defenders or use his 6-foot-5 frame to take smaller guards into the post for easy baskets. With Ian Miller graduated, this is now Thomas' team. PG Devin Bookert (8.5 PPG, 3.2 RPG) actually shot better from behind the three-point arc (43% threes) than he did overall (42% FG), but needs to be a better distributor (2.8 APG) for this team to move up the ACC standings. SG Montay Brandon (7.7 PPG, 4.9 RPG), 7-foot-3 C Boris Bojanovsky (5.9 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 1.9 BPG) and 7-foot-1 C Michael Ojo (2.5 PPG, 3.0 RPG in 11.0 MPG) are three guys that will play a big role in determining if the Seminoles can get back to the NCAA's for the first time since 2012. |

*Louisville-Florida St. Preview* ================================
By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer
Louisville (22-6) at Florida State (15-14), 12:00 p.m. EDT
As Louisville approaches the end of a challenging month, coach Rick Pitino simply wants his team to focus on basketball while moving on from one of the more disturbing incidents in the program's history.
Still dealing with the circumstances surrounding the dismissal of guard Chris Jones, the No. 17 Cardinals look for a third straight victory Saturday at Florida State.
After opening the month with its fourth straight victory, 63-55 at Miami on Feb. 3, Louisville (22-6, 10-5 ACC) dropped three of four before beating the Hurricanes and Georgia Tech. In the Cardinals' most recent defeat at Syracuse on Feb. 18, Jones was suspended for violating an unspecified team rule.
Averaging 13.7 points and a team-high 3.6 assists, he returned to score 17 in the 55-53 win at Miami last Saturday. A day later, Jones was dismissed from the team and Thursday it surfaced that he's facing felony rape and sodomy charges.
"This comes at a time when we're all shocked, extremely disheartened, and very much saddened for everybody involved," Pitino said. "We haven't dealt with this here."
Pitino hopes his players will use this incident as a life lesson while trying to remain focused on the court.
"They're going to play basketball," he said. "We all go through these trials and tribulations, with our families, with our friends, seeing loved ones pass, and we've still got to go the next day between the lines, and that's what we are right now.
"We're between the lines. And we've got to go out and do a great job."
The Cardinals have shown their mettle over the last two games, overcoming a 10-point halftime deficit and 33.9 percent shooting to beat Miami before rallying from 13 down to win 52-51 at Georgia Tech on Monday.
Terry Rozier scored 22 points against the Yellow Jackets, his last two with 20 seconds left, and Wayne Blackshear hit a pair of free throws with 4.8 seconds remaining.
Though Louisville has averaged 57.8 points and shot 36.4 percent during this 2-2 stretch, it remains one the nation's top defensive teams and has held five of its last seven opponents to fewer than 60 points and four to less than 38.0 percent shooting.
"They learned a valuable lesson in the last few games: defense is winning it for them," Pitino said.
Rozier continues to fare well on the road, averaging 22.3 points in nine games compared to 14.3 in 17 at home.
Facing Florida State (15-14, 7-9) for the first time since a 76-69 loss March 9, 1991, the Cardinals will try to keep freshman Xavier Rathan-Mayes from building on one of the more remarkable performances in college basketball history.
Averaging 13.6 points coming into Wednesday's game at Miami, the 6-foot-4 guard scored 30 of his 35 points in the final 4:38.
He went 8 for 10 from the field, 6 for 8 from 3-point range and 8 for 9 at the foul line during his flurry, all while checking in and out due to foul trouble. Despite Rathan-Mayes almost single-handedly erasing an 18-point deficit, the Seminoles dropped their second straight, 81-77.
"It was a crazy feeling just to be locked into a zone like that," he said.
Florida State won 55-54 at home over then-No. 23 Miami on Feb. 1 for its only victory in five games against ranked opponents this season.
