| | | MIAMI: Miami is a team people do not know about yet, but the backcourt of transfers SG Sheldon McClellan and PG Angel Rodriguez has a chance to be one of the best in the ACC. McClellan was a very talented player at Texas two seasons ago, while Rodriguez was the starting point guard at Kansas State. Rodriguez does a great job of running the show for the offense, while McClellan is a superb athlete, who can be an elite perimeter defender. C Tonye Jeriki (4.2 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 0.9 BPG) is the lone returning starter on the team, but he is known more as a defensive player. For this team to make a run at the NCAA Tournament, it will need big performances from freshmen SG Ja'Quan Newton and James Palmer. | | FLORIDA ST: The Seminoles struggled last season, but showed some potential last March when they reached the NIT Final Four. Florida State brings back its starting backcourt, led by SG Aaron Thomas (14.5 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 37% threes). Thomas is a difficult matchup because he can use his quickness to drive around defenders or use his 6-foot-5 frame to take smaller guards into the post for easy baskets. With Ian Miller graduated, this is now Thomas' team. PG Devin Bookert (8.5 PPG, 3.2 RPG) actually shot better from behind the three-point arc (43% threes) than he did overall (42% FG), but needs to be a better distributor (2.8 APG) for this team to move up the ACC standings. SG Montay Brandon (7.7 PPG, 4.9 RPG), 7-foot-3 C Boris Bojanovsky (5.9 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 1.9 BPG) and 7-foot-1 C Michael Ojo (2.5 PPG, 3.0 RPG in 11.0 MPG) are three guys that will play a big role in determining if the Seminoles can get back to the NCAA's for the first time since 2012. |

*Miami-Florida St. Preview* ===========================
By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer
Miami (FL) (14-6) at Florida State (11-10), 12:30 p.m. EDT
After having to witness another inexplicable home defeat, Miami's Jim Larranaga believes this has been the wildest roller-coaster ride of a season he's experienced in 31 years of coaching.
In what's likely to their last game before falling back out of the poll, the 23rd-ranked Hurricanes will try to regroup with their third straight road victory in the rivalry against Florida State on Sunday.
Miami (14-6, 4-3 ACC) was ranked No. 15 before suffering home losses to Green Bay and Eastern Kentucky in December, though the squad also took No. 2 Virginia to double overtime in an 89-80 defeat Jan. 3.
The Hurricanes seemed to turn things around following that contest by winning four of five - including an impressive 90-74 win at No. 4 Duke on Jan. 13 - to get back into the poll for the first time since Dec. 19.
Miami, however, lost to a visiting unranked opponent for the third time this season on Wednesday, shooting 34.5 percent from the field and 6 for 26 from 3-point range in a 70-50 loss to previously ACC winless Georgia Tech.
"This team probably has the widest range of performance I've ever seen," Larranaga said. "They can be absolutely great one night, and you just don't recognize them the next day."
The Hurricanes have been wildly inconsistent offensively, averaging 73.4 points on 47.5 percent shooting in their 14 wins compared to 60.2 per game with a 36.7 field-goal percentage in six defeats.
Sheldon McClellan, averaging a team-high 14.6 points, has totaled 13 on 5-of-16 shooting in his last two games. Angel Rodriguez, scoring 13.7 per game, went scoreless while missing all eight of his shots Wednesday.
Tonye Jekiri, though, matched a season high with 13 points and he's averaging an ACC-best 12.0 boards in league games.
Miami hopes to bounce back on the road, where it has averaged 74.4 points on 47.3 percent shooting - including a 46.4 mark from 3-point range - while winning four of five. It's also won two in a row in Tallahassee after dropping its previous six.
Jekiri finished with 15 points to help the Hurricanes earn a split of last season's series with a 77-73 road win last February.
Florida State (11-10, 3-5) has won two of three entering this matchup following a season high-tying three-game skid.
Xavier Rathan-Mayes stayed hot with 21 points Wednesday, hitting a long jumper and two free throws in the final minute to lead the Seminoles to an 82-76 double-overtime home win over Wake Forest.
The ACC co-rookie of the week has scored 22.0 per game over his last four, including a 35-point performance last Saturday at No. 13 North Carolina that tied the fifth-best total by a freshman in conference history.
Classmate Phil Cofer added 19 points and eight boards Wednesday after he had scored 13 over his previous three games.
"They're growing up," coach Leonard Hamilton said. "They're learning. It shows that they have ACC potential."
The Seminoles have dropped their last six home games versus ranked opponents, including a 74-68 loss to the third-ranked Hurricanes on Feb. 13, 2013. They haven't beat rivals Florida and Miami in the same season since 2008-09.
