KEY GAME INFORMATION
VILLANOVA: Last season: 36-4, won third national championship in school history.
Nickname: Wildcats
Coach: Jay Wright
Conference: Big East
Who's gone: Point guard Jalen Brunson, F Omari Spellman, F Mikal Bridges, G Donte DiVincenzo are all in the NBA.
Who's back: Guard Phil Booth, the last major link to the 2016 title team, returns for a fifth season. He averaged 10 points and made 10 starts for the Big East Tournament title team. He's going to be counted on to lead a team that will try and develop four sophomores into stars. Collin Gillespie, Jermaine Samuels, Dylan Painter and Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree all need to emerge into solid rotation players for the Wildcats to have a shot at a repeat.
Who's new: Freshman Jahvon Quinerly, a five-star recruit, is expected to follow Brunson as Villanova's next great point guard and graduate transfer Joe Cremo is expected to provide needed depth after he scored 1,469 points in three years at Albany.
The Skinny: The Wildcats are ranked ninth in The AP Top 25 and should again contend to win the Big East. The Wildcats are reloading after losing four stars to the NBA. But an elite program like Villanova just replaces talent with talent and the Wildcats are expected to keep rolling deep into March.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have Villanova as a 10-1 shot to win the NCAA Tournament. But no team has been able to repeat since Florida in 2006 and 2007.
BUTLER: Last season: 21-14, lost in second round of NCAA Tournament for the third time in four years.
Nickname: Bulldogs.
Coach: LaVall Jordan.
Conference: Big East.
Who's gone: Forward Kelan Martin, forward Tyler Wideman.
Who's back: Guard Kamar Baldwin becomes top scoring option (15.7 points per game) for the first time in his college career and also excels on defense. Centers Nate Fowler (5.9 ppg, 3.1 rebounds) and Joey Brunk (1.8 rebounds per game) should see their playing time increase and could be the keys to helping Bulldogs maintain their traditionally strong rebounding edge. Point guard Paul Jorgensen (10.2 ppg), a part-time starter last season, could win back the starting job from Aaron Thompson (4.3 ppg, 3.4 assists). Shooting guard Sean McDermott (7.5 points) also returns and could be used in smaller lineups.
Who's new: Sophomore forward Jordan Tucker becomes eligible in December and could give the Bulldogs an exciting new piece after transferring into the program from Duke. Markeese Hastings and Bryce Golden are the only freshmen on the roster, but newcomers don't often play big roles on this roster.
The Skinny: Jordan loses his top scorer (Martin) and top two rebounders (Martin and Wideman) from last season's team, but the Bulldogs have developed a penchant for finding replacement parts and appear ready to do so again in a still strong Big East. How far they ascend will depend largely on their backcourt play, led by Baldwin who was named to the conference's all-tournament team.
Expectations: Butler has been installed by Las Vegas oddsmakers as a 120-1 longshot to win the NCAA Tournament. Their odds are the same as conference rivals Xavier and St. John's and in-state foe Notre Dame. Villanova, at 10-1, is only Big East team ahead of the Bulldogs.
PREVIEW
No. 18 Villanova takes perfect Big East mark to Butler

Villanova will look to stay undefeated in the Big East when it travels to face Butler on Tuesday night.

The No. 18-ranked Wildcats (14-4, 5-0 Big East) most recently ousted Xavier, 85-75, on Friday in Philadelphia.

Senior forward Eric Paschall has averaged 20.0 points and 8.6 rebounds per game in the Wildcats' five conference games. Senior guard Phil Booth has averaged 24.0 points in the past four games overall.

This duo has carried the Wildcats in what was believed to be a rebuilding season. They lost four players off last season's national championship team to the NBA -- guards Jalen Brunson and Donte DiVincenzo, along with forwards Mikal Bridges and Omari Spellman.

"I keep saying this, but we've got to get some other guys going or we're going to wear those two out," Villanova coach Jay Wright said of Paschall and Booth. "We gave them two days off last week because we're playing them 38 or 39 minutes a game."

Collin Gillespie came up with 18 points while Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree added 11 points and six rebounds to help contribute to the win over the Musketeers.

Going on the road to play Butler has been a difficult task for Villanova in the past five years. The Wildcats won the first three games but dropped the last two. The largest margin of victory in all five meetings has been eight points.

"I think we realize how much better we have to get on the glass and defensively," Wright said. "We learned how to play a little bigger, which we may have to do against Butler. I also think every experience we have together is important. This group has not played together."

Butler (12-7, 3-3) is coming off an 80-71 victory over St. John's on Saturday.

Guard Kamar Baldwin scored a season-high 30 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Jordan Tucker came off the bench to score a career-best 24 points.

That win came at a raucous, sold-out home arena at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs will be searching for a repeat performance against the visiting Wildcats.

"Our fans came out in some nasty weather and were great for us today," Butler coach LaVall Jordan told reporters.

"That's why you come to Butler -- for the opportunity to this stage in this place. We truly earned that win against a team with a lot of firepower. We have guys with bloody lips and bloody knees. I'm proud of the fight."

Baldwin played 39 minutes, knocked down 10 of 18 shots from the field and 8 of 10 from the free throw line. Baldwin swept eight rebounds, while Sean McDermott managed to grab a career-high tying 12 rebounds.

In six Big East games, Baldwin is averaging 22.2 points, 6.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists while shooting 51 percent from the field.

To take down the defending national champion Wildcats, the Bulldogs will need a complete team effort once again.

"To play a game like that on a stage like that, in this place, there's nothing like it," Jordan told reporters. "There's absolutely nothing like it. We talked about locking in to go 1-0. They played with an inspiration. It wasn't perfect by any means."
