KEY GAME INFORMATION
W VIRGINIA: West Virginia had some big wins last season against Kansas and Kansas State, and has one of the top returning scorers in college basketball in combination G Juwan Staten (18.1 PPG, 5.8 APG and 5.6 RPG). Staten is nearly impossible to contain off the bounce, as he does a great job of finishing at the rim and drawing fouls (182-of-253, 72% from the free-throw line). For Staten, he will have to be even better this season as the No. 2 and No. 3 scorers for the Mountaineers are no longer on the team. PF Devin Williams (8.4 PPG, 7.2 RPG) is a guy that can get double-doubles on any given night, and he will have to do that for a West Virginia team that is going to struggle to score the ball. Head coach Bob Huggins always gets his teams to play hard, but to make a run at the NCAA Tournament, players like SG Gary Browne (5.9 PPG and 2.4 RPG) and JUCO transfer SG Jaysean Paige are going to have to play really well.
BAYLOR: Point guard Kenny Chery (11.5 PPG, 4.7 APG, 2.6 RPG) stepped up in a big way last season in taking over this Baylor offense. He did a great job of playing under control and not turning the ball over with a 2.4 Ast/TO ratio. SF Royce O'Neale (7.1 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 2.9 APG) was not asked to do a lot of scoring last season, but the frontcourt is less crowded with the now-departed duo of Cory Jefferson and Isaiah Austin. With those guys gone, look for O'Neale to take his offensive game to another level. He averaged only 4.7 shots last year, but that number could double this season. PF Rico Gathers (6.4 PPG, 6.4 RPG) has a chance to be the top rebounder in the conference. He played only 17.8 MPG last season, and with that number potentially being 25-to-28 minutes, he could be in double figures every night. For the Bears to remain in the upper half of the Big 12, they will need big seasons from SF Taurean Prince (6.2 PPG, 2.8 RPG in 14.2 MPG) and swingman Ish Wainwright (1.9 PPG).

*West Virginia-Baylor Preview* ==============================

By NOEY KUPCHAN STATS Writer

West Virginia (22-6) at Baylor (21-7), 4:00 p.m. EDT

Baylor and West Virginia appear to be hitting their strides with March just around the corner.

The 19th-ranked Bears look to build on one of their more impressive wins Saturday when they host the 20th-ranked Mountaineers, who could be out for revenge after getting blown out in Morgantown earlier this month.

Both schools have won three in a row as they battle for positioning in the Big 12, widely considered to be the toughest conference in the nation this season. West Virginia (22-6, 10-5) is tied with No. 12 Iowa State and No. 16 Oklahoma for second place, one game behind No. 8 Kansas with three to go - including another much-anticipated showdown with the Jayhawks on Tuesday following the Mountaineers' 62-61 win Feb. 16.

The fifth-place Bears (21-7, 9-6) are two games back after winning six of eight. They're coming off their first-ever victory in 13 visits to Ames, 79-70 over the Cyclones on Wednesday.

Taurean Prince had 20 points off the bench to lead five Bears in double figures. Baylor made a season-high 14 3s on 26 attempts, including a stretch of six in a row to go up 72-66 with 4:43 to play.

"You're not going to do that a lot on the road. We made a lot of shots," coach Scott Drew said. "The other thing is we continued to compete. ... Our strength-coach trainer deserves a lot of credit in making sure this time of year in the grind of things they still have legs to play."

Baylor has won three of four on the road, a stretch that began with an 87-69 victory over West Virginia on Feb. 7. Rico Gathers recorded one of his league-leading 14 doubles with 17 points and 17 rebounds for the Bears, who shot a season-high 54.9 percent while holding the Mountaineers to 36.4.

Baylor leads this series 5-1, with the only loss coming 66-64 at home last Jan. 28.

The Mountaineers defeated Texas 71-64 on Tuesday. West Virginia allowed the Longhorns to shoot 52.5 percent but forced 17 turnovers, giving them 579 on the season to rank first in the country.

"We're just going to try to ride the wave, man," forward Devin Williams said.

West Virginia is known for its suffocating press defense, but coach Bob Huggins went to a 1-1-3 zone at one point.

"I think we got three stops in a row or four out of five," he told the team's official website. "We did a better job rebounding than what we have when we tried to play the zone in the past. I don't know how much we're going to do it. We will when we need to, obviously, but I like what we're doing."

Juwan Staten totaled 42 points in the wins over Kansas and then-No. 22 Oklahoma State last Saturday before finishing with seven on 3-of-9 shooting Tuesday. He's averaging a team-high 14.5 points, down from last season's mark of 18.1.

West Virginia is 4-5 against Top 25 opponents, with its lone road victory coming against the Cowboys. The Mountaineers had dropped their previous 19 road matchups with ranked teams.

Baylor is 14-2 at home and has won five of its last seven overall against Top 25 foes.
