KEY GAME INFORMATION
CLEVELAND: Key Additions: WR Amarri Jackson, WR Andrae Thurman, WR Andy Cruse, OL Daniel Baldridge, DB Fred Shaw, DB Bryan Williams.
Outlook: After just five playoff appearances through the first 16 seasons in franchise history (only located in Cleveland since '08), the Gladiators finally broke out with a historic 17-1 regular season last season. Though head coach Steve Thonn's squad was beaten badly by Arizona in the ArenaBowl (72-32), the stakes are the highest they've ever been for the Glads as we head into the season. Following an incredible run last season, Cleveland is set for another deep playoff run. Quarterback Shane Austin enters his second season as Cleveland's starter, and though he lost wideout Thyron Lewis, who spent the last five seasons in Cleveland and was Austin's No. 2 go-to guy. But, he does get to keep his No. 1 guy''Dominick Goodman (156 catches, 1,671 yards, 34 TDs in '14) and picks up a replacement for Lewis with the addition of Jackson. Thonn does have one of the best secondaries in the league on the defensive side of the football, with LaRoche Jackson, Dominic Jones and Fred Shaw. I don't think this 17-win team will have much of a problem repeating as division champs against Philly and New Orleans this year.
SAN JOSE: Key Additions: QB Erik Meyer, QB Joe Clancy WR Darius Reynolds, WR Adron Tennell, WR Diondre Borel, DB Virgil Gray, DB Eric Crocker.
Outlook: Head coach Darren Arbet, a three-time ArenaBowl champion, enters his 15th season at the helm of the SaberCats' squad (168-81, including his 16-9 postseason record) and is looking for his fourth straight playoff appearance. The 'Cats have been bounced from the National Conference playoffs by the Arizona Rattlers in each of the past three seasons. Arbet is hoping that quarterback Nathan Stanley, who had a superb rookie season in 2014 (50 TDs, 103.5 rating), can help the 'Cats take the next step in the postseason. The additions of veteran star defensive backs, Gray and Crocker, makes this one of the most dangerous secondaries in the league. Veteran Erik Meyer, who was signed by San Jose from division foe Spokane this off-season, will give the inexperienced 26-year old Stanley the leadership and support he needs to lead the 'Cats to another division title.
