| | | SAN JOSE: Key Additions: QB Erik Meyer, QB Joe Clancy WR Darius Reynolds, WR Adron Tennell, WR Diondre Borel, DB Virgil Gray, DB Eric Crocker.
Outlook: Head coach Darren Arbet, a three-time ArenaBowl champion, enters his 15th season at the helm of the SaberCats' squad (168-81, including his 16-9 postseason record) and is looking for his fourth straight playoff appearance. The 'Cats have been bounced from the National Conference playoffs by the Arizona Rattlers in each of the past three seasons. Arbet is hoping that quarterback Nathan Stanley, who had a superb rookie season in 2014 (50 TDs, 103.5 rating), can help the 'Cats take the next step in the postseason. The additions of veteran star defensive backs, Gray and Crocker, makes this one of the most dangerous secondaries in the league. Veteran Erik Meyer, who was signed by San Jose from division foe Spokane this off-season, will give the inexperienced 26-year old Stanley the leadership and support he needs to lead the 'Cats to another division title. | | PORTLAND: Key Additions: WR V'Keon Lacey, WR Perez Ashford, OL Ty Gieser, DB Andre Martin, DB Scott Williams, K Brady Beeson.
Outlook: Under head coach Matthew Sauk, the Portland Thunder finished their inaugural 2014 season with a putrid 5-13 record. But, they head into the 2015 season with plenty of hope under former Iowa Barnstormers head coach Mike Hohensee. He had three losing seasons with the 'Stormers from 2012-14, but the veteran coach won four division titles and an ArenaBowl in his long tenure with the former AFL franchise Chicago Rush (2001-2008, 2010). He brings in plenty of AFL postseason experience (12 wins in 24 playoff games) and has a shot at turning this franchise into a winning team. Last season, Portland had three different quarterbacks attempt at least 159 passes (Kyle Rowley, Dann Southwick and Darron Thomas) and four total see the field (Nathan Enderle). Three of those four signal callers are back for a second season in Portland''Rowley, Thomas and Enderle. It appears as though Rowley will once again be the go-to guy this season as they look to compete with some tough opponents in the Pacific Division. |
