KEY GAME INFORMATION
WASHINGTON: When Dean Cokinos was with the New Orleans VooDoo, he featured a team that was chock full of younger players who were either brand new to the Arena Football League or still in the infant stages of their careers. In his first head coaching gig since that point, he has assembled a Washington Valor outfit that is now an entire year in the making. His team has just two rookies on its opening 24-man roster, and the experience of this squad gives it the potential to challenge for an ArenaBowl in Year 1.

Offensive Outlook
Perhaps the biggest coup of the offseason came relatively late in the free agency process when the Valor signed Erik Meyer. Meyer, who was last seen leading the 20-win San Jose SaberCats to a championship two seasons ago, is back in the AFL and will be the leader of an offense that features one of the most dangerous red zone threats in the AFL in Greg Carr and one of the most accomplished receivers the League has ever had in T.T. Toliver.
Roger Jackson never really had a home last year playing with the Sharks as their fourth (and sometimes fifth) wide receiver, but he should be featured more this year with the Valor. The man they called "Spiderman" in New Orleans scored 16 touchdowns in his rookie campaign with the VooDoo, and he'll have a lot of help with Toliver and Carr on the outside.
Defensive Outlook
Jimmy Gordon, the first player Washington ever traded for, could quietly end up being one of the stars of this defense. Gordon is a great pass rusher out of the Mack linebacker position, and with a solid defensive line in front of him including Everett Dawkins, Brandon Sesay and David Washington, the Valor should be putting plenty of pressure on opposing quarterbacks in 2017.
The real strength of this team though, is in its coverage. Bryce Peila is a former All-Arena Jack linebacker, and he has an uncanny nose for the football in the middle of the defense. Cameron McGlenn and Tracy Belton both played with Cokinos in New Orleans and should make up a terrific duo at the back, and that should give Terrence Smith the ability to rove around in the defense a little more and perhaps play some on the offensive side of the ball when needed as well.
BALTIMORE: It would be fair to look at the Baltimore Brigade as the little brothers of the Washington Valor. They're Ted Leonsis' second team in the Arena Football League, and they got off to a much later start in the process than the Valor did. However, Omarr Smith has assembled quite a talented bunch, and if the Brigade have found a gem in Shane Carden at the quarterback position, this could end up being the surprise team in the AFL in 2017.
Offensive Outlook
It's obvious to point the finger at the quarterback spot for the Brigade. Whereas the other four presumptive starting quarterbacks in the AFL are true veterans of the game , Carden is a rookie and is going to be tasked with leading this offense right out of the chute.
Baltimore's receivers aren't the biggest in the AFL, but it does have one of the true standouts of the League in Reggie Gray. Gray was, at times, a little lost in Jacksonville's crowded offense last season, but he should be the showcase receiver on this team this year, and it wouldn't be surprising if he ended up leading the League in many receiving categories by the time this campaign is said and done.
Keep an eye on the offensive line for the Brigade as well. They only have two players with any AFL experience up front, though do note that Rory Nixon played for Smith last season in LA and was a threat as a receiver and a runner.
In many respects, this Baltimore offense looks awfully similar to the one that Smith had with the KISS, and he was able to develop both Nathan Stanley and Pete Thomas with the help of a veteran receiver, in that case, Donovan Morgan.
Defensive Outlook
Baltimore is going to win its games on the defensive side this year. Calvin Fance, Dexter Davis, K.C. Obi and Khreem Smith are all pass rushers with a great attitude, and it wouldn't be shocking if this club ended up leading the AFL in sacks as a result.
Keep an eye on Varmah Sonie and Brandon Stephens in the secondary as well. These two men helped make Orlando's defense last season, and Sonie in particular is incredibly special with his 47 PBUs and 19 INTs in his three-year career.
