KEY GAME INFORMATION
LA KISS: KISS head coach Bob McMillen spent a hectic offseason constructing a very competitive roster that includes a nice balance of both veterans and rookies. Veteran quarterback J.J. Raterink was the team's first acquisition and likely to be the Week 1 starter; however, former two-time Heisman Trophy finalist Colt Brennan could give Raterink a run for his money. Brennan enjoyed a decorated college career at the University of Hawaii and will look to make his mark in the AFL as a rookie in 2014. Whoever wins the job will have some talented receivers to target. Donovan Morgan, who caught 1,351 yards last year with the New Orleans VooDoo, was the 2008 AFL Rookie of the Year. The team also acquired 6-foot-7 wideout Markee White, who is coming off his first 1,000-yard season of his four-year career. Former NFL receiver Samie Parker will also be returning to the AFL with the KISS in 2014. On the defensive side of the ball, the KISS will rely heavily on their veteran defenders. Mac linebacker Beau Bell will be the team's defensive leader in the middle. The KISS secondary includes AFL vets Mervin Brookins, Jorrick Calvin and Andre Jones, all of whom have demonstrated a knack for finding the ball during their careers. Rookie defensive end David Veikune, a former second round draft pick of the Cleveland Browns, could be a player to keep an eye on as well.
ARIZONA: The Arizona Rattlers enter the 2014 season looking to become the first team to achieve an ArenaBowl three-peat since the Detroit Drive (1988-90). The core of Coach Kevin Guy's back-to-back championship squad will be returning, but they will have to fill in some crucial holes. The most significant hole was left by First Team All-Arena defensive back Virgil Gray, who joined the Pittsburgh Power in free agency in September. Gray led the Rattlers in tackles last season while also recording a franchise-record 15 interceptions, not to mention he was named the Riddell Defensive Player of the Game in ArenaBowl XXVI. However, the Rattlers were able to add 2011 Riddell Defensive Player of the Year, Vic Hall, to pick up the slack. Hall recorded 83 solo tackles and seven interceptions as a defensive back for the Chicago Rush a year ago. 'Do-It-All' Hall joins an already stout secondary that includes defensive backs Marquis Floyd and Arkeith Brown, who combined for 17 interceptions and 31 pass defended last season. The Rattlers also brought in some help along the defensive front by trading for defensive end Quinn Pitcock. Pitcock, a former All-American at Ohio State. Pitcock only saw action in one game last year for the Orlando Predators but recorded 4.5 sacks as a rookie with the Predators in 2012. Coach Guy and his squad hope that their additions on defense can help strengthen a group that finished 13th in overall defense last season. On the other side of the ball, Nick Davila and his left arm will serve as the catalyst for the offense. The 'Latin Laser' is coming off his fourth consecutive season of throwing at least 100 touchdowns and is not likely to slow down in 2014. Davila had the luxury of throwing to a group of decorated receivers on the outside including three former Rookies of the Year in Rod Windsor, Maurice Purify and Jared Perry. The Rattlers also have one of the League's most underrated talents in Tysson Poots and the ever-versatile Kerry Reed at their disposal on the perimeter. With three straight ArenaBowl appearances and another talented lineup returning to the field in 2014, Arizona remains the team to beat in the AFL.
