| | | NY ISLANDERS: LAST SEASON: 34-37-11, 79 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing eighth in Metropolitan Division and 14th in Eastern Conference.
COACH: Jack Capuano, fifth season with Islanders (118-120-39).
ADDED: G Jaroslav Halak, G Chad Johnson, C Cory Conacher, RW Jack Skille, LW Harry Zolnierczyk, C Mikhail Grabovski, LW Nikolai Kulemin.
LOST: G Evgeni Nabokov, D Radek Martinek.
PLAYER TO WATCH: John Tavares. The 24-year-old star center with the C on his sweater is back after missing New York's final 22 games last season due to a knee injury sustained while playing for Canada in the Olympics. He was second on the team with 66 points - including 24 goals - despite playing in only 59 games. The Islanders have made the playoffs only once (2013) since he was selected with the No. 1 pick in the 2009 draft.
OUTLOOK: This will be a year of nostalgia for the Islanders as they play their final season at the Nassau Coliseum - their home since joining the NHL in 1972 where four straight Stanley Cup champions were built from 1980-83. They will move to Brooklyn's Barclays Center next season. Since 2004, the Islanders have reached the playoffs just twice (2007 and 2013) and were eliminated in the first round both times. The task doesn't get any easier in the eight-team Metropolitan Division with perennial powerhouse Pittsburgh and the rival New York Rangers, who reached the Stanley Cup finals last season. Halak will shoulder a lot of the burden, along with Tavares, as he replaces veteran Evgeni Nabokov in goal. | | NASHVILLE: LAST SEASON: 38-32-12, 88 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing 10th in the Western Conference.
COACH: Peter Laviolette, 1st season with Predators, 389-282-25-63 overall.
ADDED: F James Neal, F Olli Jokinen, F Mike Ribeiro, F Derek Roy.
LOST: Coach Barry Trotz, goaltenders coach Mitch Korn, F Patric Hornqvist, F Nick Spaling.
PLAYER TO WATCH: G Pekka Rinne. Even with Ribeiro needing to prove his personal issues have been handled, Rinne is the two-time Vezina Trophy finalist who anchors Nashville's defense. He only played 24 games last season after an infection in his surgically-repaired hip needed more surgery, keeping him on crutches for weeks. Rinne went 3-0-1 in his final four games and was the MVP of the World Championships.
OUTLOOK: The Predators missed the playoffs by three points with Rinne missing much of last season. Laviolette is expected to boost the Predators' offense and take advantage of the experienced forwards added during the offseason, and general manager David Poile has made it clear they must reach the playoffs. |

*Islanders-Predators Preview* =============================
By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer
New York (41-21-3) at Nashville (41-17-7), 8:00 p.m. EDT
The Nashville Predators and New York Islanders are in contention for home-ice throughout their respective conference playoffs, though neither has been playing their best hockey of late.
Nashville tries to end its longest losing streak of the season Thursday night versus New York, which has dropped four of six.
The Predators have been outscored 15-7 in four straight losses, all in regulation. They haven't lost five in a row in regulation since their first seven defeats in an eight-game slide from April 4-19, 2013.
They still own a four-point edge over second-place St. Louis in the Central Division, however.
"We're still at the top and right there and confident and I have a lot of belief in this group," center Mike Fisher told the team's official website. "Sometimes you go through these and have to learn from it. We have time to get rolling and feel good again."
Nashville has developed an ugly habit of poor starts and trailed 2-0 in the first period of a 3-1 loss at New Jersey on Tuesday. The Predators are 22-1-4 when scoring first but have failed to do so in nine straight.
"I thought the key to the game was the first period and getting behind again," said Fisher, who scored his 16th goal and third in four games following an 11-game drought. "We have to play catch-up every night. The first period is killing us. There's no excuse for it. We have to be better than that."
Nashville has suffered back-to-back home defeats for the first time, giving up four goals each in losses to Minnesota and Detroit after surrendering more than three once in going 26-3-1 there. The Predators have three shutouts during a six-game home winning streak in the series and host Winnipeg on Saturday before opening a four-game West Coast trip which includes matchups with three playoff contenders.
The Islanders (41-21-3) are among the East points leaders but trying to avoid a season worst-matching third consecutive loss after a 3-2 overtime defeat at Dallas on Tuesday to open a four-game trip.
Anders Lee scored with two seconds left in regulation, but New York was outshot 4-1 in the extra period.
"Even if we didn't get the break with 1-point-whatever seconds left, we deserved the point," coach Jack Capuano said. "We played hard. It's a good point for us here against a good team."
Thomas Hickey's overtime shot hit the crossbar, continuing a run of bad luck during the Islanders' 2-2-2 stretch. Though they've averaged 32.5 shots in the losses, they only scored on 5.4 percent of shots compared to 9.3 percent in all other games.
New York was 0 for 3 on the power play and is 1 for 14 over its last six games.
Nashville rested Pekka Rinne on Tuesday after he surrendered three-plus goals in three straight starts for the first time this season. He is 1-4-1 with a 3.20 goals-against average over his last six starts compared to a 1.94 mark previously.
He was peppered with 40 shots in a 5-2 loss at New York on Feb. 19. Nick Leddy had a goal and two assists while John Tavares and Johnny Boychuk each had a goal and an assist.
Jaroslav Halak, who made 30 saves, is 11-3-4 with four shutouts - his most against any team - in 19 games against the Predators.
Islanders forward Matt Martin won't play after being suspended for one game on Wednesday for kneeing Stars defenseman Trevor Daley in Tuesday's loss.
