KEY GAME INFORMATION
EDMONTON: LAST SEASON: 24-44-14, 62 points. Missed playoffs.
COACH: Todd McLellan (seven NHL seasons, 311-163-66).
ADDED: D Eric Gryba, LW Lauri Korpikoski, C Mark Letestu, C Connor McDavid, G Anders Nilsson, D Griffin Reinhart, D Andrej Sekera, G Cam Talbot.
LOST: G Viktor Fasth, RW Matt Fraser, C Boyd Gordon, D Martin Marincin, RW Steve Pinizzotto.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Connor McDavid. Yes, the Oilers have brought in seven other players, but all eyes are going to be on the No. 1 overall draft pick as the team tries to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2005-06. The 18-year old recorded 120 points (44 goals, 76 assists) in 47 games with the Erie Otters - and he missed time last season due to a broken hand and his international duties playing for Team Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships.
OUTLOOK: Edmonton now has experienced personnel in CEO Bob Nicholson, GM Peter Chiarelli and coach Todd McLean. The selection of McDavid was a no-brainer, and the additions of goaltender Cam Talbot and defensemen Andrej Sekera, Eric Gryba and Griffin Reinhart are upgrades. The Oilers may not be a playoff team this season, but they won't be a contender for the first overall pick in next June's draft either.
DETROIT: LAST SEASON: 43-25-14, 100 points. Lost to Tampa Bay Lightning in first round.
COACH: Jeff Blashill (first season, first NHL season).
ADDED: C Brad Richards, D Mike Green, C Dylan Larkin.
LOST: Coach Mike Babcock, C Stephen Weiss, G Jonas Gustavsson.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Tomas Tatar. The 24-year-old Czech winger had a team- and career-high 29 goals last season, increasing his total by 10 from the previous year. Tatar has developed chemistry with 35-year-old center Brad Richards and may end up leading the team in scoring after trailing just Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk in points last season.
OUTLOOK: It's tough to count out the Red Wings because they've been to 24 straight postseasons, winning four Stanley Cups during the remarkable stretch. Detroit seems to have struck a balance between leaning on veterans and counting on younger players to produce. The key competition will be in net, where Jimmy Howard is trying to hold off Petr Mrazek after losing his job to him during the playoffs.
PREVIEW
Oilers-Red Wings Preview
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Although they had a decisive advantage in shots, the Detroit Red Wings couldn't come away with a win in the opener of their longest homestand of the season.

The Red Wings could come away with a better result Friday night against an opponent they've dominated at Joe Louis Arena recently, though the Edmonton Oilers won the teams' first meeting of 2015-16.

Detroit (11-8-3) outshot Boston 34-22 on Wednesday and had an 11-4 edge while scoring twice in the second period. The Red Wings, though, couldn't hold a late lead and lost 3-2 in overtime after giving up the tying goal with 1:44 left in regulation.

"I thought we played great, so that's something to build off of. Obviously, we've got to find ways to hold onto that lead and find ways to win in overtime," forward Darren Helm said. "I think we keep moving, build off the positives that we did today and come back for next game."

Detroit continues a six-game homestand by trying for a 10th consecutive win over Edmonton at Joe Louis. The Red Wings have won 25 of 31 against the Oilers at home, with only two of Detroit's six losses coming in regulation.

Detroit's nine-game home win streak is its longest active one against any opponent and represents Edmonton's longest current such skid versus any team.

The Oilers (7-14-1) ended an eight-game losing streak in the series with a 3-1 victory Oct. 21. They won't have the player that scored the winning goal Friday, as star rookie Connor McDavid is out with a fractured collarbone.

Edmonton also lost Nail Yakupov for at least two weeks when he sprained his ankle getting tangled up with a linesman in Wednesday's 4-1 road loss to Carolina. Yakupov had two assists against Detroit last month.

The Oilers are 1-4-1 in their last six and have lost four straight on the road.

"That's a really, really disappointing performance by our hockey club," coach Todd McLellan said. "I still believe in our group, but we weren't engaged physically. We were outworked. It's the determination factor that I'm looking for and I didn't think we were a very determined team."

Pavel Datsyuk, who missed the first meeting with Edmonton while recovering from ankle surgery, has four goals and six assists in his last seven against the Oilers. Datsyuk scored his 300th career goal Wednesday and second in as many games.

Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg has 15 points in his past 11 matchups with Edmonton, though he's scored one goal.

Cam Talbot will start in net for the Oilers in their first of back-to-back games. He stopped 28 shots Oct. 21 but has given up 13 goals in his last three outings.

Defenseman Justin Schultz is not expected to return from a back injury until Saturday in Pittsburgh, the fourth of a season-high five-game road trip for the Oilers.

The Red Wings started Petr Mrazek in the latest matchup with Edmonton but are expected to go with Jimmy Howard in this one. Howard has won his last 12 starts against the Oilers with a 1.48 goals-against average.
