| | | DALLAS: LAST SEASON: 42-32-8. Sixth in Central Division.
COACH: Jim Montgomery (first season, first NHL season).
ADDED: LW Blake Comeau, RW Valeri Nichushkin, D Roman Polak, G Anton Khudobin.
LOST: F Antoine Roussel, F Curtis McKenzie. D Dan Hamhuis, D Greg Pateryn, G Kari Lehtonen.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Five-time All-Star center Tyler Seguin won't have to answer questions about his future in Dallas. The 26-year-old Seguin, who could have been an unrestricted free agent after this season, should be free from distractions after signing a nearly $80 million, eight-year contract extension through the 2026-27 season. Seguin had a career-high 40 goals last season.
OUTLOOK: Montgomery makes the jump from the college ranks (University of Denver), where he had an offensive team. As a first-time NHL COACH, he has the prolific scoring duo of Seguin and 29-year-old team captain Jamie Benn (signed through 2024-25) on a line with Alexander Radulov. But the Stars have to get more consistent scoring outside of that top line. On defense, John Klingberg led all NHL defensemen with 59 assists last season, and Marc Methot is healthy after being limited 36 games in his Dallas debut. Only a late slide kept the Stars out of the playoffs last season ' they missed the postseason for the eighth time in 10 seasons. | | ANAHEIM: COACH: Randy Carlyle (10th season, 13th NHL season).
ADDED: D Luke Schenn, D Andrej Sustr, C Brian Gibbons, RW Carter Rowney.
LOST: D Francois Beauchemin, D Kevin Bieksa, C Antoine Vermette, LW Jason Chimera, RW J.T. Brown, C Derek Grant.
PLAYER TO WATCH: RW Patrick Eaves. The veteran forward signed a three-year contract to stay with the Ducks last summer but missed the entire ensuing season with what he thought was an autoimmune nervous disorder, only to learn it was post-viral syndrome. The heavily bearded goal-scorer won't be ready to play at the start of this season while recovering from his serious health scare and a more mundane shoulder surgery, but the Ducks are very hopeful he'll be back soon to provide some much-needed offensive punch.
OUTLOOK: The Ducks' run of five straight division titles ended last season, and the Sharks humiliated them in a first-round playoff sweep. Instead of shaking up the roster, Carlyle and Anaheim GM Bob Murray made no significant roster additions and decided to play a speedier style with their returning players and another influx of youth from the Ducks' remarkable farm system. The heavy, bullying squad that made two Western Conference finals in the past four years will join the rest of the NHL in trying to push the tempo. The Ducks have enough talent to try just about anything, but the speed of their adjustment and their overall health will determine whether they've missed the window to win a Stanley Cup with this core. |
| | Ducks try to solve Stars in clash of inconsistent teams
The Anaheim Ducks and Dallas Stars carried their longest winning streaks of the season into December, but each delivered unforeseen duds last weekend, leaving their coaches careful not to grow too optimistic heading into their third matchup of the season Wednesday at Honda Center in Anaheim. The Ducks (16-11-5) had won six of seven games to move into the top three in the Pacific Division, but played uninspired in a 4-1 loss to the visiting Carolina Hurricanes on Friday. Anaheim then took on the New Jersey Devils, the last place team in the Eastern Conference, and needed to rally from three deficits before winning 6-5 in a shootout Sunday. "It takes 60 minutes, and sometimes 65-plus, to win a hockey game and get two points," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle told the Orange County Register after practice Monday. "That's really the way we try to approach it, because you're not going to be perfect every night. You're going to have your peaks and valleys. You're going to have some good games, where you think things are going well, and the next game can really be a nightmare." The Stars (16-11-3) had won a season-high four straight games before losing 4-2 against the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday to open a four-game road trip. Dallas didn't come out with the pace and determination that was evident during the first three games of the winning streak. "I'm a little concerned right now, just because our energy and our emotion the last two games hasn't been what it was there," Dallas coach Jim Montgomery told reporters after the loss to Vegas. "We were consistently playing with energy, emotion, and a lot of competitiveness, which comes with those two qualities, and the last two games we haven't had it." The Stars have already defeated the Ducks twice this season in Dallas 12 days apart in October. The Stars erased a 3-0 deficit in a 5-3 victory Oct. 13, the only regulation loss through the first seven games of the season for the Ducks. Dallas scored four second-period goals in the first win against Anaheim, and the Stars came back with three in the middle period in the second meeting with Anaheim -- a 5-2 win. Anaheim goaltender John Gibson started both games against Dallas and will likely be the starter against Wednesday after coming on in relief against the Devils after Ryan Miller sustained a knee injury at 7:13 of the third period. Miller, who was trying for his 375th NHL win, which would have moved him past John Vanbiesbrouck as the winningest U.S.-born goalie in NHL history, is expected to be sidelined for about six weeks. The Ducks claimed Chad Johnson off waivers Tuesday and he'll likely be Gibson's backup. Ben Bishop is expected to make his second start in goal against the Ducks this season. Anaheim forward Ryan Getzlaf needs one point to become the second player for Anaheim to record 900 career points -- all with the Ducks. Jakob Silfverberg will try to set a career high by scoring a goal in four straight games. |
