KEY GAME INFORMATION
CINCINNATI: Cincinnati's offensive woes the past two seasons were largely a product of poor line play. First-round draft pick C Billy Price and former Bills OT Cordy Glenn could be major upgrades. WR A.J. Green is a nightmare to defend, RB Joe Mixon flashed elite potential as a rookie and speedy second-year WR John Ross is back from a 2017 lost to injury. While QB Andy Dalton is more of a game-manager than a playmaker, he has more weapons than ever. Longtime defensive-line tandem DE Carlos Dunlap and DT Geno Atkins are monsters up front, each contributing over 60 career sacks for Cincy. LB Vontaze Burfict is productive when he stays out of trouble, and former Bills LB Preston Brown is an upgrade in the middle of the defense. In William Jackson, Dre Kirkpatrick and Darqueze Dennard, the Bengals have a trio of former first-round CBs who held opponents to 6.5 yards per attempt in 2017.
INDIANAPOLIS: New head coach Frank Reich's most important task is to keep QB Andrew Luck healthy. Indy drafted G Quenton Nelson 6th overall and signed former Chargers G Matt Slauson in an attempt to protect their only star player, though Luck's receiving corps is extremely thin behind WR T.Y. Hilton. The expected improvement of the line should help the running game, which includes some promising young RBs in Marlon Mack and Jordan Wilkins. New coordinator Matt Eberflus will run a 4-3, zone-based defense that emphasizes athleticism. The problem is that he inherits arguably the worst defensive roster in recent NFL history. Aside from second-year S Malik Hooker and competent DE Jabaal Sheard, there simply isn't much to work with. The Colts ranked 30th in both yards and points allowed last year, and made no significant personnel additions in the offseason.
