KEY GAME INFORMATION
CHICAGO: GUARDS: There's no medical reason why DERRICK ROSE can't be 100 percent healthy this year. But, as we saw in abbreviated action last season, his confidence may never come back . . . JIMMY BUTLER will still play major minutes this year, though Chicago's added depth on the wing means he's no longer a candidate to lead the league in playing time . . . KIRK HINRICH will return to a straight back-up role. His defense guarantees him minutes at both guard spots in a reserve role . . . TONY SNELL was inconsistent as a rookie, but has the defensive skill set to play solid minutes . . . AARON BROOKS gives the Bulls a more offense-heavy option to lead the second unit. He has his work cut out for him to claim the role D.J. Augustin held last season. FORWARDS: Despite the rough end to his Lakers career, PAU GASOL still has something left in the tank. He will see fewer minutes in a deep Bulls frontcourt, but he's a great fit on the offensive end . . . It seems like only a matter of time before MIKE DUNLEAVY relinquishes his starting spot. The Bulls now have plenty of shooters on this roster . . . TAJ GIBSON will reprise his sixth-man role. He'll be one of the league's top reserves; talent-wise he's a borderline All-Star . . . Rookie DOUG McDERMOTT will supplant Dunleavy once he grasps head coach Tom Thibodeau's defensive concepts. McDermott is an elite shooter who can get by defensively . . . NIKOLA MIROTIC might have some growing pains, but the Euro star can play the 3 or stretch-4 and has a very good offensive game. CENTERS: JOAKIM NOAH is an elite center, as he's outstanding defensively and has developed into one of the best passing big men in the NBA. The Bulls will do what they can to keep him fresh for the postseason, a luxury they have with Gasol and Mirotic adding depth to the frontcourt rotation. NAZR MOHAMMED is back as a big body with the ability to consistently keep the bench warm.
UTAH: GUARDS: TREY BURKE is likely the lead guard here, though it's really by default. He doesn't have the athleticism to make a lot of plays in the lane, and will have to rely on difficult shot-making . . . He continues to steadily improve, and there could be a bigger role available for ALEC BURKS. He'll have to develop a more consistent three-point shot before he really breaks out though . . . DANTE EXUM is an electrifying athlete, but he's making an enormous jump from essentially high school ball in Australia. He could be a gem in the long run, but don't expect him to do much as a rookie . . . TOURE' MURRY will likely play some garbage minutes. FORWARDS: He ascended to the alpha role in Utah, but GORDON HAYWARD had some struggles with the extra defensive attention. He should improve somewhat, as he knows what's coming, and has added a runner to his repertoire . . . DERRICK FAVORS will play more at the 4-spot this season, and he has the strength to power his way to easy baskets. He's a potential double-double guy . . . RODNEY HOOD had an up-and-down year at Duke despite his physical gifts. He has an NBA-caliber combination of size and athleticism, but right now he's a streaky shooter with a lot of rough edges on his game . . . TREVOR BOOKER is a solid second-unit big man, a defensive bruiser and good screener on offense . . . JEREMY EVANS can dunk, but provides little else . . . STEVE NOVAK will never be a full-time player, but he's still one of the league's elite shooters. CENTERS: He was disappointing last season, but ENES KANTER still has some upside on the offensive end of the floor. How he and Favors will mesh is yet to be seen . . . RUDY GOBERT is a shot-blocking fool, but still ultra-raw

*Bulls-Jazz Preview* ====================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Chicago (8-5) at Utah (5-9), 9:00 p.m. EDT

Injuries continue to mount for the Chicago Bulls, who are on the verge of losing three straight regular-season games for the first time in almost a year.

With three key players already considered game-time decisions, the Bulls are also likely to be without Taj Gibson on Monday night when they try to improve to 2-2 on their annual circus trip against the Utah Jazz.

Derrick Rose missed his fourth straight game due to a sore left hamstring, Pau Gasol sat his third in a row with a left calf strain and Kirk Hinrich was out with a chest contusion for Friday's 105-87 loss at Portland.

It's unknown whether any of them will be available when the club's season-high seven-game road swing continues in Salt Lake City.

Things only got worse Friday when Gibson sprained his left ankle in the third quarter. Gibson, averaging 12.9 points and 5.9 rebounds coming in, isn't likely to suit up after leaving Moda Center in a walking boot and on crutches.

"You've got to keep moving forward because the games keep coming," center Joakim Noah said. "Nobody feels sorry for you so you've got to keep going and getting better. Hopefully Taj will be all right."

Since beating the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday for its sixth straight road win, short-handed Chicago (8-5) has lost at Sacramento and Portland by a combined 33 points.

The Bulls haven't scored more than 88 in either contest while shooting 39.5 percent from the field. After averaging 25.7 points in his previous three games, Jimmy Butler hopes to bounce back after scoring nine on 3-of-13 shooting Friday.

Nikola Mirotic might be able to provide a lift after finishing with a season-high 24 points while hitting 4 of 7 from 3-point range to go with 11 rebounds against the Blazers.

Chicago is in the midst of an uncharacteristic defensive slump, allowing an average of 104.0 points on 50.3 percent shooting in its past two. The Bulls had given up 97.1 points per game and a 42.9 field-goal percentage over their previous 11 games.

They haven't lost three straight since a four-game skid from Dec. 14-19.

The Jazz (5-9) averaged 103.2 points in their first five games, but have scored 93.0 per game over the last nine. They had 38 turnovers in losing their last two and are on the verge of a third straight defeat following Saturday's 106-94 home loss to New Orleans.

Utah also has allowed opponents to reach 100 points in five of its last six contests, surrendering a 48.9 field-goal percentage in that span. Pelicans star Anthony Davis had his way with the Jazz, finishing with a career-high 43 points and 14 rebounds.

"We just weren't able to (get stops)," Gordon Hayward said. "We dug ourselves too big of a hole."

Hayward, averaging a team-high 19.1 points, scored 31 after putting up 12.3 per game in his previous three. The swingman totaled 30 points while missing 20 of 30 shots in last season's series with Chicago.

Trey Burke finished with a season-high 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting Saturday after he scored two while going 1 for 8 from the field in a 101-88 loss at Golden State on Friday.

Burke hit a 3-pointer in overtime to help the Jazz snap a six-game slide in the series with an 89-83 home win against the Bulls on Nov. 25.
