KEY GAME INFORMATION
PHOENIX: LAST SEASON: 21-61, missed playoffs.
COACH: Igor Kokoskov (first season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Devin Booker (24.9 ppg), G Shaquille Harrison (6.6 ppg), F Trevor Ariza (11.7 ppg, Houston), F Ryan Anderson (9.3 ppg), C Deandre Ayton (rookie, 20.1 ppg at Arizona).
KEY LOSSES: F Marquese Chriss, C Alex Len, F Jared Dudley
KEY ADDITIONS: Ariza, Anderson, Ayton, G Mikhal Bridges
PLAYERS TO WATCH: First and foremost is Ayton, the 7-foot-1 multi-skilled big man chosen No. 1 overall in the draft. Kokoskov sees him as a rim protector on defense and he possesses a soft outside touch to go with bruising, athletic inside moves. The question is how he handles the much tougher world of the NBA. Also, Booker. He underwent hand surgery and missed the preseason, athough he did a lot of left-handed workouts. He wants to be back by the season opener and is anxious to prove he was worth that five-year, $158 million contract he signed in the offseason.
OUTLOOK: It's been a long time since this franchise was relevant and there is more turmoil as this season begins. Nine days before the opener, Suns owner Robert Sarver fired general manager Ryan McDonough. There is no true proven point guard on the roster and who knows whether the team can find one. The hope rests with Booker, Ayton and Josh Jackson, who will come off the bench at least initially. Kokoskov is widely respected. But it's hard to see that eight-year absence from the postseason ending anytime soon.
PHILADELPHIA: LAST SEASON: 52-30, lost in Eastern Conference semifinals.
COACH: Brett Brown (sixth season)
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Ben Simmons (15.8 ppg), G JJ Redick (17.1 ppg), F Robert Covington (12.6 ppg), F Dario Saric (14.6 ppg), C Joel Embiid (22.9 ppg).
KEY LOSSES: F Marco Belinelli, F Ersan Ilyasova
KEY ADDITIONS: F Wilson Chandler, G Zhaire Smith, G Landry Shamet PLAYER TO WATCH: Markelle Fultz was the No. 1 pick of the 2017 draft and was expected to team with Simmons and Embiid to form a Big Three nucleus. Fultz instead was a big bust. Fultz' pitiful rookie year derailed by a mysterious shoulder injury, a broken shot and confidence issues. He played the first four games, missed 68 games because of injury, then was persona non grata in the postseason. He said he took 150,000 shots with his shot doctor this summer and even made a 3-pointer in the preseason after not making one last season.
OUTLOOK: The Sixers underwent their roster-stripping 'Process' because they were tired of being mediocre with no realistic hope of improvement. But if Fultz doesn't make a leap, they'll be stuck as a 50-win team that can't get past the second round of the playoffs. There are worse things, but the end result of the Process was supposed to be a championship and fans are getting restless.
PREVIEW
Upstart Sixers with Butler set to host Suns

What can 20 seconds mean for a team on the rise?

Jimmy Butler's brilliant defensive-to-offensive flourish to cap off a 122-119 overtime win over the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday revitalized the Philadelphia 76ers and sent them to their second straight win.

Now with the woeful Phoenix Suns (3-12) coming into town on Monday night at 7 p.m. at Wells Fargo Center, can the 76ers (11-7) make it three in a row?

If Butler has his late-game ways, that'll be a resounding yes.

The newest Philadelphia star blocked a Kemba Walker shot attempt on the defensive end on Saturday, saved the ball from going out of bounds, then sprinted down the floor and hit a 33-pointer on the other end to clinch the win.

"Obviously him making the shot in overtime was a huge play," head coach Brett Brown said after the win. "We're going to talk about him making the shot, but what all the replays and the explanations of the shot should show, is his him blocking a shot out of midair and saving it over his shoulders and sprinting down the floor, and then we get a timeout. We set up a play where he makes a shot. That was an incredible 20 seconds of Jimmy Butler."

For Butler, it was just more of what he did that morning.

"That's a shot I work on a lot," he told reporters after the game. "I actually came over this morning and shot it about 50 times and I'm so glad it went in. My teammates and my coaches had enough faith in me yet again as they did at the end of regulation. I'm just so happy it went in, though."

Butler missed a shot to end regulation but received a warm welcome at the bench from his new teammates, something that comforts Brown.

"The best thing for us that came out of it is when he misses the shot similar at the end of regulation, I'm looking over my assistant coach's shoulders, and I'm seeing the team getting him going," Brown said. "The support, the reaction from his teammates to get him going, to lift him up, is one of the highlights of the night."

The Suns haven't had many 20-second stretches to celebrate quite like Butler's this season.

Phoenix scored a surprising 116-96 win over the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday to snap a four-game losing streak, only to lose to Oklahoma City on Saturday as the Thunder out-rebounded the Suns 62-42.

The Suns are getting solid production from No. 1 overall pick DeAndre Ayton, who has nine double-doubles in 15 games.

He is looking forward to his first matchup with Sixers center Joel Embiid, who questioned comparisons with the rookie big man on account of his defense.

Ayton was diplomatic when asked about Embiid by reporters on Sunday.

"I can't really say anything," Ayton said. "I haven't put the ball in the hoop (in an NBA game). The only thing I could is probably let my game talk and compete."
