KEY GAME INFORMATION
PORTLAND: GUARDS: DAMIAN LILLARD might be the most complete offensive point guard in the NBA. He's a legitimately great shooter, and quick enough off the dribble to get wherever he wants inside the paint . . . WESLEY MATTHEWS runs, runs and runs off the ball as a spot-up shooter . . . STEVE BLAKE is most likely to absorb Mo Williams' old sixth-man role. He can take some ball-handling duties, but at this point his value is as a spot-up shooter . . . He had his rookie season erased by injuries, and it's a crowded rotation, but C.J. McCOLLUM might be able to shoot his way into significant minutes . . . WILL BARTON is a practice player unless he develops a three-point shot . . . ALLEN CRABBE will likely bounce between Portland and the D-League again. FORWARDS: LaMARCUS ALDRIDGE's combination of length and mid-range shooting makes him virtually unguardable when he's on . . . NICOLAS BATUM often runs the offense with Lillard working off the ball. Batum can shoot, too. There's no real weakness in his game . . . He tore a thumb ligament during Summer League play, but THOMAS ROBINSON is already back on the court. He's a hustle guy off the bench, but has a limited offensive game and can't defend bigger 4's . . . DORELL WRIGHT will likely bounce in and out of the rotation again due to his streaky shooting . . . JOEL FREELAND's skill set is limited, but he can play the 4 and the 5 . . . VICTOR CLAVER will try to work his way back into the rotation as a defensive specialist. CENTERS: ROBIN LOPEZ proved a perfect complement to Aldridge, and should handle the bulk of the minutes at center again . . . CHRIS KAMAN gives Portland s a more offensive-minded option off the bench . . . It will be another developmental season for MEYERS LEONARD
PHILADELPHIA: GUARDS: MICHAEL CARTER-WILLIAMS wasn't the most legit Rookie of the Year, but he had his moments. He should be a little more efficient in his second season, and Philly certainly doesn't have a better alternative at the point. A shoulder injury will likely keep him sidelined for the first three weeks of the upcoming season . . . TONY WROTEN makes some highlight-reel plays and will likely start at the 2. He's too erratic to be in the rotation for a playoff team . . . As for the rest of the backcourt, ELLIOT WILLIAMS is looking to revive his career, and he's no worse than James Anderson and Hollis Thompson, who were starting for this team last season . . . Injuries have all but ended JASON RICHARDSON's career. He's on the final year of his deal, and might not play in 2014-15 after suffering a stress fracture to his right foot in late October . . . ALEXEY SHVED could play some quality minutes at both guard spots for this team. FORWARDS: The 2014 draft was deep, allowing Philly to land a first-round value in second-rounder K.J. McDANIELS. He's certainly better than anyone the Sixers trotted out at the 3-spot last season . . . HOLLIS THOMPSON could keep a starting job warm again . . . Another second-rounder, JERAMI GRANT, could play his way into the rotation. He's talented, but he's also something of a 'tweener, and like most Syracuse guys sitting in a 2-3 zone, Grant never learned how to e-on-one defense . . . ARNETT MOULTRIE has been something of a problem child in Philly, but he's good enough to make this rotation if he turns it around effort-wise . . . LUC RICHARD MBAH a MOUTE is here as a mentor for Joel Embiid. CENTERS: NERLENS NOEL is ready to make his debut. His collegiate rates suggest he'll rebound and block shots. The question marks are durability, functional strength and offensive game. He'll get to learn on the fly . . . JOEL EMBIID's foot problems will keep him out until at least midseason, and the Sixers will certainly play it safe with him. On raw talent, he's a future star. The questions are durability, and whether he can co-exist with Noel.

*Trail Blazers-76ers Preview* =============================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Portland (10-3) at Philadelphia (0-13), 7:00 p.m. EDT

The Portland Trail Blazers simply outscored opponents in the early part of their lengthy win streak but have relied on an improved defense lately to keep that run going.

The Trail Blazers will seek an eighth consecutive victory Monday night when they visit a team that's been woeful at both ends of the court, the winless Philadelphia 76ers.

Portland (10-3) averaged 116.0 points in the first three victories on its streak but has been held to 99.5 per game in its last four contests. The Blazers have kept rolling by giving up an average of 88.8 points on 39.8 percent shooting, and are on their longest run since taking 11 in a row Nov. 8-25, 2013.

"I don't want guys getting caught up in the moment of seven in a row," forward LaMarcus Aldridge said. "Let's act like we've arrived. I like that guys are in the moment. Guys still staying locked in. Guys are still staying hungry and still trying to learn every day."

The Blazers held Boston to 38.9 percent shooting in a 94-88 victory in Sunday's opener to a three-game Eastern Conference trip and are now allowing 94.6 points per game on 41.3 percent shooting. Portland gave up an average of 102.8 points and 45.1 percent shooting last season.

"This year, we want to be a good defensive team. We've got guys coming from the bench that play good defense and care about it," point guard Damian Lillard said. "When you've got a team full of guys that want to do it and understand what we're trying to do, it makes us better."

Aldridge's 20 points led six players in double figures Sunday while Lillard had 12 points on 4-of-14 shooting after averaging 25.8 and shooting 56.4 percent in the prior five games.

Philadelphia ranks last in the league offensively with 88.8 points per game and 40.7 percent shooting. The 76ers (0-13) are also near the bottom with their averages of 105.2 points allowed on 47.3 percent shooting.

After a 91-83 defeat at New York on Saturday, Philadelphia is two losses away from matching its worst start in team history and five shy of tying the 2009-10 Nets' league-worst 0-18 start. The 1972-73 Sixers dropped their first 15 games en route to finishing 9-73, the NBA's worst 82-game record.

Following its matchup with Portland in the opener of a four-game homestand, Philadelphia plays Brooklyn (5-8) on Wednesday, Dallas (10-4) on Saturday and San Antonio (9-4) on Monday.

"Obviously, we do want to get (a win)," said forward Nerlens Noel, who had career highs of 17 points and 12 rebounds Saturday. "We're playing hard. We're in close games, so it's about finishing the game and coach (Brett) Brown putting us in great positions like he is. We've just got to execute."

Aldridge is averaging 27.0 points and 14.7 rebounds in his last three games against the Sixers, but Portland has dropped two of them. The Sixers no longer have their top scorers from those victories, including two players who combined for 53 points in a 101-99 win in Portland on Jan. 4.
