KEY GAME INFORMATION
CHICAGO: LAST SEASON: 27-55, missed playoffs.
COACH: Fred Hoiberg (fourth season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: Kris Dunn (13.4 ppg), G Zach LaVine (16.7 ppg), F Justin Holiday (12.2 ppg), F Jabari Parker (12.6 ppg, Milwaukee), C Robin Lopez (11.8 ppg).
KEY LOSSES: G Jerian Grant, G David Nwaba
KEY ADDITIONS: Parker, F Wendell Carter Jr., F Chandler Hutchison
PLAYERS TO WATCH: F Lauri Markkanen is expected to miss the first few weeks because of a high grade lateral elbow sprain he suffered in practice. From Finland, Markkanen, averaged 15.2 points and 7.5 rebounds in 68 games as a rookie last season. The Bulls are counting on LaVine to show he can be the cornerstone piece they envisioned when they acquired him along with Dunn and the rights to Markkanen from Minnesota for Jimmy Butler in the 2017 draft night trade. He was limited to 24 games last season, missing the first 42 while recovering from a torn ACL in his left knee and then sitting out the final 14 because of tendinitis in the same knee. That didn't stop Chicago from matching Sacramento's four-year, $80 million offer sheet for LaVine.
OUTLOOK: Though the Bulls hardly look like contenders in the Eastern Conference, the potential to make a jump is there. That hinges on improvement from Markkanen, LaVine and Dunn, Parker staying healthy and contributing, and maybe Carter chipping in after being drafted with the No. 7 overall pick.
OKLAHOMA CITY: LAST SEASON: 48-34, lost in first round.
COACH: Billy Donovan (fourth season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Russell Westbrook (25.4 ppg, 10.3 apg, 10.1 rpg), G Dennis Schroder (19.4 ppg, 6.2 apg, Atlanta), F Paul George (21.9 ppg), F Patrick Patterson (3.9 ppg), C Steven Adams (13.9 ppg, 9.0 rpg).
KEY LOSSES: F Carmelo Anthony, C Nick Collison
KEY ADDITIONS: Schroder, C Nerlens Noel, G/F Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Schroder. He was a dynamic scorer in Atlanta with a less talented team around him. He'll begin the season as a starter as Andre Roberson recovers from a knee injury and he'll get a chance to seize the job, especially if he can improve defensively. He has been outstanding as a scorer and as a facilitator in the preseason. He could have a big season with Westbrook and George drawing most of the attention. His addition means the Thunder will have five capable scorers in the starting lineup, a rarity for the franchise in recent years.
OUTLOOK: The Thunder shocked many when they were able to keep George this summer, and they also kept versatile, athletic forward Jerami Grant. By making the deal to move Anthony and add Schroder, the Thunder became younger, more athletic and more dynamic. If they can find some outside shooting this season to take advantage of their multiple shot creators, they could make a deep run in the West.
PREVIEW
Thunder look to maintain defense vs. Bulls

Having lost three of their last four games, the Oklahoma City Thunder were in need of some positive momentum Saturday night against the Los Angeles Clippers.

They got it, thanks in large part to their the defensive side, forcing 26 turnovers in a 110-104 win.

Heading into Monday's game against the Chicago Bulls at Chesapeake Energy Arena, the Thunder are looking to keep up their strong the defensive end, but Oklahoma City coach Billy Donovan said it's not just about keeping up gaudy takeaway numbers.

"I don't think we ever go into a game saying, 'Hey listen, we want to turn this team over," Donovan told reporters. "You want to go in and you want to play solid defense."

A big catalyst for the Thunder defensively recently has been point guard Russell Westbrook, who had six steals Saturday.

"When we defend like that, best team in the league," Westbrook said. "So we know what we have to do to win games, we've got to defend to win."

Offensively, Oklahoma City has been lifted lately by Paul George, who is averaging 28 points per game over his last five, shooting 53 percent from the field (46 of 86) and 48.6 percent from behind the 3-point line (18 of 37).

But George is much more encouraged with how things are going on the defensive end.

"We cause guys that aren't necessarily playmakers to make plays," George said.

The Bulls are expected to be without leading scorer Zach LaVine for the second consecutive game after LaVine injured his left ankle late in a 96-91 loss to Orlando in Mexico City.

Playing without LaVine was no problem for the Bulls on Saturday, though they rallied for a 98-93 win at San Antonio.

It was just their second since Nov. 21. Their only other win in that time was Dec. 7 when they beat the Thunder at home. 114-112.

Against the Spurs, it was Kris Dunn that picked up the slack in LaVine's absence, hitting a floater with 38.8 seconds left, a jumper with 8.3 seconds left and a pair of free throws with three seconds left that put the game away.

Dunn had 24 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals making his first start since Oct. 22 in his third game back from an extended absence due to a left knee injury.

"He's proven, last year, and then tonight, that can close," Bulls coach Jim Boylen said of Dunn. "And that's important."

According to the Chicago Tribune, LaVine could miss at least another week or two before returning, though surgery isn't expected to be required.

The absence is a big loss for a team that has struggled to find much positivity, especially after the firing of Fred Hoiberg and player unrest in the first few games of Boylen's tenure.

If the Bulls are to regain their footing, at least enough to be competitive, Dunn figures he needs to be a big part of it.

"My team believes in me," Dunn said.
