KEY GAME INFORMATION
DENVER: Shooters are en vogue, which Emmanuel Mudiay is not. But he is a big, athletic point guard who will overpower defenders. He'll be effective, it's just going to be a matter of the learning curve . . . Randy Foye figures to back up both guard spots. He's a fungible veteran chucker . . . Jameer Nelson figures to be in more of a mentor role for Mudiay. His playing time should dwindle as Mudiay improves . . . After spending his rookie year on a milk carton, Gary Harris will have a chance to play his way into the rotation as Denver rebuilds . . . Will Barton is still a work in progress. He needs to shoot it better . . . Nick Johnson could carve out a career as a defensive specialist . . . Erick Green's ceiling is a Foye-type sixth man. Wilson Chandler is the most reliable scorer left in Denver. The veteran will play both wing spots and could easily lead the team in shot attempts . . . Trade rumors constantly swirl around Kenneth Faried. He's a double double guy when he's getting minutes, but he seems to have a tendency to rub coaches the wrong way . . . The best player in Denver is Danilo Gallinari, who must prove he can stay healthy. When he's on the court, he's a true No. 1 scoring option . . . Solid back-up big man Darrell Arthur returns as a quality defender with the ability to knock down the occasional mid-range jumper . . . A throw-in in the Ty Lawson deal, Kostas Papanikolaou has to shoot much better to earn a rotation spot in Denver. Jusuf Nurkic is a monster on the low block. He is also a foul machine who will rarely stay on the floor for 30 minutes and won't be ready for the season opener (knee) . . . Nikola Jokic arrives as another quality import. He's not athletic, but he's big and skilled . . . If you're trying to pinpoint where things went wrong for Denver, signing J.J. Hickson with their mid-level exception a few years back is a good place to start . . . Joey Dorsey isn't long for this roster.
NEW YORK: Arron Afflalo is certainly not an All-Star, but he's a proven two-way player who could end up the second option on offense. He's a lot better than what the Knicks have had at the 2 in recent years . . . He seems to think health is the only thing standing between a bounceback year, and Jose Calderon will have a chance to play heavy minutes as the only veteran point guard on the roster . . . Rookie Jerian Grant is presumably the point guard of the future. He seems to fit the mold of a classic triangle point guard: a big (6-foot-5) guard with the ability to penetrate . . . Langston Galloway was one of the few bright spots in New York last season, though he's obviously looking at a much smaller role now that the Knicks have re-tooled. You can pretty much throw last season out, as the Knicks turned to the tanking route early. Carmelo Anthony's reputation is going to be on the line if he can't lift a much-improved roster to contention in the Atlantic . . . A bust due to his tweener skill set, the Knicks think they have the right system for Derrick Williams . . . From a pure upside standpoint, Kristaps Porzingis was the second-best prospect in last year's draft. It will be a matter of how quickly he's able to adapt to the physicality of the NBA . . . If Cleanthony Early shows a better grasp of defensive concepts, he'll make this rotation . . . Louis Amundson will provide muscle at a bargain-basement price . . . How bad has it gotten for the Knicks? They're paying Lance Thomas to play basketball. Robin Lopez should be able to replace most of what the Knicks lost when Tyson Chandler left town. He figures to grab a ton of rebounds as part of an undersized roster, and he can protect the rim as well . . . They essentially swapped Jason Smith for Kyle O'Quinn, who provides toughness in the second unit . . . Kevin Seraphin could have some moments for the Knicks this season. He's a very talented scorer in the post, but he doesn't play any defense. That will severely limit his minutes if it does not change.
PREVIEW
Nuggets-Knicks Preview
By SCOTT GARBARINI STATS Writer

Carmelo Anthony's ongoing knee issues are putting a drain on the New York Knicks' offense.

Making matters worse, he's being outperformed by a player they gave up to obtain the All-Star's services.

In the midst of arguably the best stretch of his career, Danilo Gallinari leads the Denver Nuggets into Madison Square Garden Sunday afternoon attempting to deal the sagging Knicks a season-high fifth straight loss.

Anthony has gone 8 of 34 from the field over his last two games and shot 32.6 percent over his past six, part of a 1-8 run that's dropped New York (23-30) to 11th place in the Eastern Conference. The 31-year-old has missed three of those games due to recurring tendinitis in his surgically repaired left knee, an injury that's led to Anthony registering a career-low 42.4 field goal percentage.

"He's carrying a big load night to night," coach Derek Fisher said. "I think he'll be fine long term. I think we just have to get through this next set of days into the break and hopefully re-evaluate him from there in terms of something that's not reoccurring."

The Knicks have shot just 38.7 percent while averaging 93.0 points during their swoon. They struggled again with Anthony held out of Friday's 91-85 loss to Memphis, falling to 0-7 in games he's missed and 1-18 when scoring 93 or less.

"We need a guy like 'Melo who you can give him the ball and he will score, he will get to the line and he will make plays for others," forward Kristaps Porzingis said. "I think that's what we're missing."

Anthony is expected to play Sunday, a positive for a team that had other encouraging signs in its latest defeat. Jose Calderon had 18 points in his second game back from a groin injury and Porzingis compiled 17 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. The rookie averaged 9.0 points on 33.3 percent shooting over his previous four games.

Gallinari has often been sidetracked by injuries since being part of the package New York sent to the Nuggets in the February 2011 trade for Anthony. The Italian has been healthy and productive since returning from a sprained ankle Jan. 2, averaging 23.4 points in 18 games to help Denver (20-31) split its last 16.

Gallinari had a season-high 33 and hit all 18 of his free throws in Friday's 115-110 comeback win over injury-plagued Chicago. He's shot 89.3 percent from the line while leading the NBA in free throws made and attempted since Jan. 6.

Denver, which has topped 100 points in 10 of its last 11, had several other contributors in rallying from an 18-point deficit late in the third quarter against the Bulls. Rookies Emmanuel Mudiay and Nikola Jokic each recorded 10 points during a fourth quarter in which the Nuggets outscored Chicago 42-21, with Mudiay finishing with 22 points and sixth man Will Barton 18.

"I would categorize this win as a character win," coach Michael Malone said. "One thing about our team, all year long we've had this resiliency, this never die, never quit mentality and that allows you to stay in a game and pull it out. You never want to get down by 18 but one thing I love about our guys is they have that fight."

The Nuggets begin a four-game trip seeking to end a three-game skid at Madison Square Garden. Anthony had 28 points in New York's 109-93 home win last season but did not play in a 106-78 loss in Denver on March 9, 2015.
