| |  | PHILADELPHIA: GUARDS: MICHAEL CARTER-WILLIAMS wasn't the most legit Rookie of the Year, but he had his moments. He should be a little more efficient in his second season, and Philly certainly doesn't have a better alternative at the point. A shoulder injury will likely keep him sidelined for the first three weeks of the upcoming season . . . TONY WROTEN makes some highlight-reel plays and will likely start at the 2. He's too erratic to be in the rotation for a playoff team . . . As for the rest of the backcourt, ELLIOT WILLIAMS is looking to revive his career, and he's no worse than James Anderson and Hollis Thompson, who were starting for this team last season . . . Injuries have all but ended JASON RICHARDSON's career. He's on the final year of his deal, and might not play in 2014-15 after suffering a stress fracture to his right foot in late October . . . ALEXEY SHVED could play some quality minutes at both guard spots for this team. FORWARDS: The 2014 draft was deep, allowing Philly to land a first-round value in second-rounder K.J. McDANIELS. He's certainly better than anyone the Sixers trotted out at the 3-spot last season . . . HOLLIS THOMPSON could keep a starting job warm again . . . Another second-rounder, JERAMI GRANT, could play his way into the rotation. He's talented, but he's also something of a 'tweener, and like most Syracuse guys sitting in a 2-3 zone, Grant never learned how to  e-on-one defense . . . ARNETT MOULTRIE has been something of a problem child in Philly, but he's good enough to make this rotation if he turns it around effort-wise . . . LUC RICHARD MBAH a MOUTE is here as a mentor for Joel Embiid. CENTERS: NERLENS NOEL is ready to make his debut. His collegiate rates suggest he'll rebound and block shots. The question marks are durability, functional strength and offensive game. He'll get to learn on the fly . . . JOEL EMBIID's foot problems will keep him out until at least midseason, and the Sixers will certainly play it safe with him. On raw talent, he's a future star. The questions are durability, and whether he can co-exist with Noel. | | NEW ORLEANS: GUARDS: He's set to return from shin surgery, and the Pelicans need JRUE HOLIDAY to rescue this backcourt. He'll play as many minutes as he can handle . . . ERIC GORDON seems to be playing at half-speed. While his defense is atrocious, he's still an efficient scorer . . . Sixth man TYREKE EVANS will play solid minutes. He has the aggressiveness of an alpha, but he never developed a complete offensive game . . . The Pels seem just about done with AUSTIN RIVERS. He's still overmatched . . . RUSS SMITH could have a future as a scoring sixth man. He'll need injuries in front of him to crack this rotation . . . JIMMER FREDETTE can shoot, but can't stay on the court as arguably the league's biggest defensive liability. FORWARDS: The lone bright spot on this team, ANTHONY DAVIS is a bona fide star. He has improved defensively in space and as a rim protector, and his offensive game is coming along nicely . . . RYAN ANDERSON returns after missing most of last season with a back injury, which could potentially linger. If healthy, he'll play big minutes as a much-needed floor spacer . . . JOHN SALMONS will look to earn a rotation spot after being scooped up off waivers . . . After a few decent moments late last season, LUKE BABBITT will try to reinvent himself as a stretch-4. Unfortunately, he still can't guard anyone . . . DARIUS MILLER is still hanging around as a practice player. CENTERS: OMER ASIK provides a bodyguard for Anthony Davis. He'll also help clean up the many mistakes of this horrendous perimeter defense . . . ALEXIS AJINCA did enough late last season to warrant a look as the Pelicans No. 2 center . . . JEFF WITHEY can protect the rim, and might be able to carve out a role in his second season in head coach Monty Williams' system. |

Anthony Davis is a big reason the New Orleans Pelicans are starting to show some consistency, and his absence against the Philadelphia 76ers earlier this month provided further proof.
Davis looks to continue his sparkling play, as the Pelicans try to avenge that loss with a fourth straight win Monday night against the 76ers.
Davis is among the NBA's top scorers with a career-high 24.3 points per game, while leading New Orleans with 10.4 rebounds. Despite having one of the league's best big men, the Pelicans (23-21) are at the bottom of the Southwest Division and have only one win streak longer than two games.
They accomplished that feat Sunday by beating Dallas 109-106 behind Davis' 28 points, 10 rebounds and five steals while his four straight free throws in the final 12 seconds provided the difference.
"We talked about how if we can beat a team like this it would be a big step for our program," coach Monty Williams said. "We knew it would be a tough, playoff-type game."
That mentality - combined with Davis' availability - could go a long way against the 76ers (8-36), who defeated New Orleans 96-81 at home on Jan. 16. That was one of three games the Pelicans played without Davis, who had a toe injury.
Davis' return has coincided with New Orleans' win streak.
Davis had a career-high nine blocks in a 135-98 win in his most recent home game against Philadelphia on Nov. 16, 2013.
He should find himself quite involved again since the 76ers have dropped nine of 10 on the road while surrendering 107.4 points. They've given up 106 points in the paint while losing the last two as the visitor, and New Orleans' average of 47.5 points in the paint ranks only behind Memphis (47.7).
Philadelphia was dominated in the paint by the Grizzlies to the tune of 54-32 while losing 101-83 on Saturday.
"We're trying to hold our group together and give our young guys a sense of purpose," coach Brett Brown said. "This is a lesson for them on how to deal with a physical, elite playoff team."
Holding on to the ball would certainly help. The Sixers turned it over 24 times against the Grizzlies, and their 18.6 average is the highest in the league.
"(That) is a big number," Brown said, "especially when we needed those possessions to put some points up."
Brown, however, feels Jerami Grant is providing a bright spot for the future. The rookie forward led Philadelphia with a season-high 16 points Saturday. He is averaging 8.3 over the past eight games.
Brown said Grant is "our poster child at the moment. Jerami's work ethic and the fact he's getting minutes is helping him grow as a player."
Grant had five points against New Orleans earlier this month - Philadelphia's last win - while Michael Carter-Williams scored 22 with seven assists, six rebounds and three steals.
The guard was held to 10 points on 3-of-12 shooting and had five turnovers Saturday.
