KEY GAME INFORMATION
SACRAMENTO: GUARDS: With Isaiah Thomas out, DARREN COLLISON steps in at the point. He looked good backing up Chris Paul in L.A. and will benefit from a wide-open offense. But it's not clear if can he handle full-time minutes after flopping as a starter in Dallas . . . BEN McLEMORE has to get it going early if he's going to keep his starting job. There's raw talent, but McLemore has a reputation for fading into the background, and was wholly unimpressive last season . . . NIK STAUSKAS will push McLemore for minutes immediately. He'll be overmatched defensively at times, but he can shoot it and moves the ball well offensively . . . It seems like RAY McCALLUM will be a solid enough back-up point guard for the next few years . . . RAMON SESSIONS will push Collison for minutes and could eventually unseat him as the Kings' starter. FORWARDS: RUDY GAY is a low-efficiency player who needs the ball in his hands, but head coach Michael Malone seems willing to let him do his thing . . . Power forward is a black hole in Sacramento. JASON THOMPSON might open the season as the Kings' primary 4, though he struggled mightily in his first season under Malone . . . DERRICK WILLIAMS has never shed that 'tweener label. The team will try to milk some second unit productivity out of him . . . REGGIE EVANS will continue to turn flopping into an art form. An obnoxious art form . . . CARL LANDRY is a question mark as he works his way back from a torn meniscus . . . Tell the world OMRI CASSPI is coming home. CENTERS: He made some real strides under Malone last year, and DeMARCUS COUSINS' improved shot selection has finally made him one of the league's better big men. He spends much less time floating on the perimeter hoisting contested 18-footers.
MINNESOTA: GUARDS: RICKY RUBIO is a fine ball-handler and creative passer, but it would be nice if he knocked down some shots . . . The Wolves are still trying to move KEVIN MARTIN's contract. He has devolved into more of a spot-up shooter . . . ANDREW WIGGINS should immediately contribute for this team. He'll be an elite defender, sooner rather than later, and should be able to produce points as well . . . Shoot-first combo guard MO WILLIAMS will head up the second unit . . . J.J. BAREA is also likely to be moved. He can still do the Mighty Mouse, sixth-man thing . . . On paper, CHASE BUDINGER is a great fit alongside Rubio due to his shooting and movement off the ball. He has to stay healthy though . . . Head coach Flip Saunders is high on ZACH LaVINE, a pure athlete who didn't do much of anything as a freshman at UCLA. FORWARDS: THADDEUS YOUNG is now the best player in this Timberwolves frontcourt. He'll lead the team in scoring and eats up rebounds as well . . . ANTHONY BENNETT should play some significant minutes with this team. He's a good scorer and will try to prove that he was just not ready to come into a bad situation last season . . . COREY BREWER has established himself as a solid defender on the wing who can knock down some threes and run the floor well . . . GLENN ROBINSON III should earn immediate minutes due to his defense . . . SHABAZZ MUHAMMAD gets new life with a new coaching regime coming in. He could be a crafty second-unit scorer . . . RONNY TURIAF is a big body who can protect the rim. CENTERS: NIKOLA PEKOVIC is a big part of this offense without needing plays designed for him. He's arguably the top offensive rebounder in the NBA . . . GORGUI DIENG impressed late last season and should be ready for a bigger role. He and Pekovic might be in a timeshare by the season's second half.

*Kings-Timberwolves Preview* ============================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Sacramento (7-5) at Minnesota (3-8), 8:00 p.m. EDT

The Sacramento Kings insist they've learned after blowing sizable leads in some of their most recent games.

They'll try to apply those lessons on a four-game trek that begins Saturday night against the depleted Minnesota Timberwolves.

Sacramento (7-5) has won two of three and was steady in the fourth quarter in a 103-88 win over Chicago on Thursday. DeMarcus Cousins had six of his 22 points in the final 3 1/2 minutes, and Rudy Gay added five of his 20 in the final six minutes.

"It's been a tough week for us. We could never really find the rhythm at the end of the game," Gay said. "To play a well-coached team like this and finish the game says a lot about this team."

The Kings squandered a 26-point lead to Memphis in a 111-110 loss at the end of their latest trip Nov. 13, and frittered away advantages of 24 points at Dallas on Nov. 11 and 12 against visiting New Orleans on Tuesday that also resulted in defeats.

"In a way it was good, those losses taught us a lesson. It was a learning experience for us," guard Darren Collison said.

Sacramento begins its next trip by facing a Minnesota team that will likely be missing four starters once again. Ricky Rubio (ankle) is out indefinitely for the Timberwolves (3-8), as is Kevin Martin, who scored 37 points in a 115-99 win over New York on Wednesday after fracturing his right wrist in the first quarter.

They also likely won't have Nikola Pekovic (wrist) or Thaddeus Young available until next week at the earliest. Young will reportedly rejoin the team Sunday following his mother's funeral, and Pekovic is expected to miss at least one more game.

Without that quartet, Minnesota was routed 121-92 by visiting San Antonio on Friday. The Timberwolves were outshot 54.8 to 41.1 percent, outscored 54-30 in the paint and outrebounded 53-34.

Former No. 1 overall draft pick Anthony Bennett was a bright spot with a career-best 20 points off the bench. He's averaging 8.8 points while shooting 63.6 percent in five home games.

"You've got to play with who you have," forward Robbie Hummel said. "We can't be consumed with who we don't have. We can't focus on that."

Minnesota's short-handed roster will likely make it hard-pressed to earn a fifth win in six home games against Sacramento, and the Timberwolves are playing their third game in four nights. They split the two matchups at the Target Center last season and four overall meetings.

"(It's) going to be a tough game. Three games in four nights, and (the Kings) have been here resting and watching us play," coach Flip Saunders said. "They're playing at a really high level. It's early in the year but if you had to say, 'Who are your top five guys for MVP?' I'd say Cousins would have to be one of them right now with the way he's playing."

Cousins averaged 25.3 points and 14.3 rebounds while playing in three matchups in 2013-14, and Gay is averaging 24.3 points in his last six meetings.
