KEY GAME INFORMATION
DETROIT: GUARDS: New head coach Stan Van Gundy's system is perfect for BRANDON JENNINGS, as it is heavy on high pick-and-rolls, which is where Jennings is most dangerous. He'll never be an efficient scorer . . . Detroit gave a good chunk of change to JODIE MEEKS, so he's likely to start as a spot-up shooter when he returns from a back injury in January . . . A Tskitishvili Award-winner as one of the stars of Summer League, KENTAVIOUS CALDWELL-POPE has a shot to carve out sixth-man minutes . . . After a mini-breakout with Chicago, D.J. AUGUSTIN is the insurance policy behind Jennings. He's also a great fit for Van Gundy's system . . . WILL BYNUM has been downright solid with the second unit, but he'll have to play his way back into the rotation . . . This is a redshirt season for SPENCER DINWIDDIE as he comes back from a torn ACL. FORWARDS: They'll keep shopping JOSH SMITH, who is miscast as a 3 on this roster . . . KYLE SINGLER will continue to see solid part-time minutes. He can play both wing spots and has become a good enough threat on corner threes . . . CARON BUTLER joins a crowded frontcourt. He's evolved into a three-point specialist in the latter part of his career . . . Van Gundy is a JONAS JEREBKO believer. The stretch-4 fell out of favor the past two seasons, but he has a chance to earn a big role off the bench . . . CARTIER MARTIN gives them another athletic wing who can shoot the three . . . Euro import LUIGI DATOME was a big disappointment last season. He'll have a tough time breaking into this rotation . . . TONY MITCHELL might be looking at another year in the D-League . . . GREG MONROE is an everyday double-double threat. He'll fill the stat sheet as he plays for a contract for next season. CENTERS: ANDRE DRUMMOND is a monster on the boards with Defensive Player of the Year upside once he improves in space. Offensively, he can dunk but not much else . . . AARON GRAY is here to fill out the roster once he's cleared to return from his heart problems.
MINNESOTA: GUARDS: RICKY RUBIO is a fine ball-handler and creative passer, but it would be nice if he knocked down some shots . . . The Wolves are still trying to move KEVIN MARTIN's contract. He has devolved into more of a spot-up shooter . . . ANDREW WIGGINS should immediately contribute for this team. He'll be an elite defender, sooner rather than later, and should be able to produce points as well . . . Shoot-first combo guard MO WILLIAMS will head up the second unit . . . J.J. BAREA is also likely to be moved. He can still do the Mighty Mouse, sixth-man thing . . . On paper, CHASE BUDINGER is a great fit alongside Rubio due to his shooting and movement off the ball. He has to stay healthy though . . . Head coach Flip Saunders is high on ZACH LaVINE, a pure athlete who didn't do much of anything as a freshman at UCLA. FORWARDS: THADDEUS YOUNG is now the best player in this Timberwolves frontcourt. He'll lead the team in scoring and eats up rebounds as well . . . ANTHONY BENNETT should play some significant minutes with this team. He's a good scorer and will try to prove that he was just not ready to come into a bad situation last season . . . COREY BREWER has established himself as a solid defender on the wing who can knock down some threes and run the floor well . . . GLENN ROBINSON III should earn immediate minutes due to his defense . . . SHABAZZ MUHAMMAD gets new life with a new coaching regime coming in. He could be a crafty second-unit scorer . . . RONNY TURIAF is a big body who can protect the rim. CENTERS: NIKOLA PEKOVIC is a big part of this offense without needing plays designed for him. He's arguably the top offensive rebounder in the NBA . . . GORGUI DIENG impressed late last season and should be ready for a bigger role. He and Pekovic might be in a timeshare by the season's second half.

*Pistons-Timberwolves Preview* ==============================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

Detroit (0-1) at Minnesota (0-1), 8:00 p.m. EDT

Though the youth-laden Minnesota Timberwolves came up short in their opener, there was a lot to like about their performance against a playoff stalwart.

The Detroit Pistons looked much less promising - and could be in for another tough night without Greg Monroe.

Minnesota looks to claim the longest winning streak in series history Thursday night when it hosts Detroit.

The Timberwolves opened their season on the road for the first time since 2000-01 with a 105-101 loss Wednesday at Memphis. Thaddeus Young, who was acquired from Philadelphia in the three-team deal that sent Kevin Love to Cleveland, scored 26 on 10-of-18 shooting in his Minnesota debut. Despite being without Love, who averaged 12.5 rebounds in his final season with the club, the Timberwolves held a 47-33 rebounding advantage against a Grizzlies squad that finished fifth last season with an average rebounding margin of plus-3.2.

Minnesota's bench also looked much improved, outscoring Memphis 46-10. It ranked 25th in 2013-14 with 27.5 bench points per game.

Beyond Young, however, the Timberwolves struggled to find a dependable scorer with Kevin Martin inactive after twisting his ankle in Tuesday's practice. The four starters besides Young were a combined 11 of 33 from the floor. No. 1 overall pick Andrew Wiggins, who also came over in the Love trade, was 2 for 5 with six points in 18 minutes.

Minnesota's biggest issue was its 23 turnovers - two more than it had in any game last season. Ricky Rubio committed seven.

"We have to take care of the ball, especially me," Rubio said. "I got maybe too crazy at the end of the third quarter."

The Timberwolves are looking for their ninth straight win over the Pistons, which would surpass their eight-game run from Dec. 28, 1997-Jan. 7, 2002, as the longest streak by either team against the other.

Detroit lost 89-79 at Denver in Stan Van Gundy's return to the sidelines. The Pistons trailed by two after D.J. Augustin's jumper with 3:19 left, but were held to two points on 1-of-7 shooting the rest of the way.

Josh Smith scored 25 points but the Pistons shot 36.9 percent from the field and were 6 of 26 from 3-point range without marksmen Jodie Meeks (back) and Cartier Martin (foot).

Detroit was credited with 15 assists - down even from a sub-par 20.9 average last season that tied for 24th in the league.

"We didn't get good shots," Van Gundy said. "I thought most of the shots we had, we took a lot of difficult shots. We were trying to do everything on one pass. It's going to be tough. I thought we drove the ball pretty hard, drew help and then tried to force shots. We did not do a good job moving the ball."

Greg Monroe will serve the second in his two-game ban for pleading guilty to driving while visibly impaired. He averaged 15.2 points and recorded 35 double-doubles in 2013-14.

Young averaged 20.3 points on 50.7 percent shooting in his last four meetings with Detroit, while Nikola Pekovic averaged 19.2 points with 9.4 rebounds in his last five.
