KEY GAME INFORMATION
ATLANTA: LAST SEASON: 29-53, missed playoffs.
COACH: Lloyd Pierce (second season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Trae Young (19.1 ppg, 8.1 apg), G Kevin Huerter (9.7 ppg), F De'Andre Hunter (No. 5 overall pick), F John Collins (19.5 ppg, 9.8 rpg), C Damian Jones (5.4 ppg).
KEY LOSSES: C Dewayne Dedmon, G Kent Bazemore, F Omari Spellman
KEY ADDITIONS: Hunter, Jones, F Cam Reddish, F Jabari Parker, G Evan Turner, G Allen Crabbe, F Chandler Parsons, C Bruno Fernando.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Young and Collins are two of the NBA's top young players, while Huerter shows plenty of promise, so the key to this season will be how well they mesh with two more first-round picks, Hunter and No. 10 choice Reddish. Hunter figures to start right away, while Reddish will get plenty of playing time off the bench. Also keep an eye on Parker, the No. 2 overall pick in 2014 by the Milwaukee Bucks. While he has yet to develop into the star everyone expected, Parker is still just 24 years old and has averaged 15.1 points per game over his five-year career. The Hawks, who are focused on player development, hope they can flush out Parker's game. Finally, the Hawks will send out 42-year-old Vince Carter for his record 22nd ' and final ' season in the NBA. Carter showed last season he's still got game, but he won't get as many minutes in his last hurrah as he serves more of a coach-mentor role to all the young players.
OUTLOOK: The Hawks showed promise in Pierce's first season but this franchise is still in the midst of a major rebuilding job. Atlanta might have an outside shot at slipping into the playoffs, but would probably be better off getting another crack at the draft lottery. General manager Travis Schlenk has been acquiring over-priced players that other teams wanted to get off the books. Parsons ($25.1 million), Turner ($18.6 million) and Crabbe ($18.5 million) are in the final year of their contracts, which means 2020 is the year to really start paying attention to the Hawks.
LA CLIPPERS: LAST SEASON: 48-34, lost 4-2 to Golden State in Western Conference first round.
COACH: Doc Rivers (seventh season with Clippers, 307-185; 21st season overall, 894-658).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: F Kawhi Leonard (30.5 ppg with Toronto), F Paul George (23.7 with Oklahoma City), G Patrick Beverley (7.6), G Landry Shamet (9.1), C Ivica Zubac (8.9).
KEY LOSSES: G Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, F Danilo Gallinari, F Wilson Chandler, G-F Garrett Temple, G Sindarius Thornwell, G Tyrone Wallace.
KEY ADDITIONS: Leonard, George.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: It's all about newcomers Leonard and George. They'll be the top two options on offense. Leonard is coming off a season in which he led Toronto to its first NBA championship (and earned his second ring). Leonard returning home was contingent upon pairing with George, also an LA-area native. George, who finished third in MVP voting last season, can guard nearly any position while being a huge scoring threat. Lou Williams and Montrezl Harrell, the NBA's top bench-scoring duo last season, will get starter-level minutes again.
OUTLOOK: No more watching other teams go deep in the playoffs. The NBA's balance of power has shifted to the Clippers, who have never advanced beyond the second round let alone won a championship. All that's expected to change behind Leonard and George, both regarded as two of the best two-way players in the league. The Clippers had to give up talented veteran Gallinari and star-in-the-making Gilgeous-Alexander, but they kept Harrell, Williams and re-signed Beverley, whose sole job will be using his tenacious D to keep others from scoring. The Clippers are favorites to win it all, a stunning shift for a franchise that has spent much of its existence as a punch line.
PREVIEW
Clippers' Leonard-George duo to debut vs. Hawks

Paul George and Kawhi Leonard will play their first game together with the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday, when the team hosts the Atlanta Hawks.

George made his anticipated Clippers' debut in New Orleans on Thursday, scoring 33 points in 24 minutes in a 132-127 loss to the Pelicans. Lou Williams had 31 points and Rodney McGruder added 20 as the Clippers dropped their second in a row.

Leonard sat out the game for "load management" since it was the second game of a back-to-back. Clippers guard Patrick Beverley also missed the contest with a sore left calf.

George, who missed the initial 11 games rehabbing from offseason surgery on both his shoulders, connected on 10 of 17 shots from the floor, converted 3 of 5 3-pointers and made all 10 of his free throws. He described his performance as "terrible." However, Clippers coach Doc Rivers disagreed.

"He ran plays like he had been running them for weeks, months, and I was shocked by that," said Rivers, according to the Los Angeles Times. "We ran a very difficult play for him. He scored six points out of it. That is all timing. When we saw he could do it, we kept running it. We were surprised. So you have to give him credit. He must've watched a heck of a lot of film and all of that to be prepared."

"I'm here to win games and I didn't get a win," George said, according to the Times. "We had a chance to win tonight, and a couple bad possessions in a row on my behalf down the stretch and we lose."

The short-handed Hawks fell 128-112 to the host Phoenix Suns on Thursday. Trae Young finished with 21 points and a season-high-tying 13 assists, while Alex Len contributed 21 points and 10 rebounds against his former club. Jabari Parker had a team-high 24 points for the Hawks. Rookie De'Andre Hunter had six steals to go along with 14 points.

For Young, it was the fourth straight game he has scored at least 20 points and recorded 10 assists. Young had 42 points and 11 assists in a 125-121 victory over the host Denver Nuggets on Tuesday. He is averaging 27.3 points and 9.1 assists this season.

Atlanta's DeAndre' Bembry was ejected in the third quarter after receiving his second technical foul. Hawks rookie Cam Reddish also was tossed after drawing his second flagrant-1 foul.

"It's unfortunate," Atlanta coach Lloyd Pierce told the Atlanta Journal Constitution. "We lose DeAndre' Bembry to techs, and Cam, he's just trying to be aggressive and they're calling flagrants. Just one of those nights the whistle didn't go our way."

Twenty-two turnovers also hurt the Hawks, who fell to 2-3 on the road this season.

The Hawks will be without guard-forward Kevin Huerter, who suffered a shoulder strain against the Nuggets. Huerter will be reevaluated in about two weeks, according to the club.

The Hawks continue to play without forward John Collins, who is serving a 25-game suspension by the NBA for testing positive to a growth hormone substance.

The Clippers' game is the first of back-to-back contests for the Hawks. They visit the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday.
