KEY GAME INFORMATION
NEW YORK: GUARDS: A huge upgrade over Raymond Felton, JOSE CALDERON's shooting and low turnover rate make him a good fit in the triangle offense. Defense will be an issue . . . His shot selection will always be laughable, but J.R. SMITH will still have the occasional blow-up game . . . IMAN SHUMPERT never looked right last season. He won't get bumped from the rotation, but he's in danger of getting just part-time minutes . . . He'll defend, and if his strong shooting as a rookie wasn't a fluke, TIM HARDAWAY JR. will push his way into the starting five . . . PABLO PRIGIONI is a poor man's Calderon . . . SHANE LARKIN has some long-term upside, but is unlikely to contribute this season. FORWARDS: The triangle offense should play to CARMELO ANTHONY's strengths and open things up a bit more than the iso-heavy system they ran under Mike Woodson. He'll be in the running for another scoring title . . . It's another year of ANDREA BARGNANI. The Knicks are too thin to not play him, but his defense is atrocious and he hasn't shot it well in years . . . AMAR'E STOUDEMIRE's monster deal expires after this season, and a trade is a possibility. In a best-case scenario, he can be effective for 20 minutes or so per night . . . Second-rounder CLEANTHONY EARLY has a chance to break into this rotation. He'll defend and pick up some hustle points . . . QUINCY ACY and TRAVIS OUTLAW will provide some much needed depth and energy for a team that can sometimes be lackadaisical on the court. CENTERS: With Tyson Chandler gone, it will be up to SAMUEL DALEMBERT to pick up the defensive slack. He's a capable rim protector and could be in for as much playing time as he's gotten in years . . . JASON SMITH is another defensive-minded big man. He's good in space but is not a polished shot blocker . . . COLE ALDRICH was good enough late last season to earn a bench spot in the 2014-15 campaign.
CHICAGO: GUARDS: There's no medical reason why DERRICK ROSE can't be 100 percent healthy this year. But, as we saw in abbreviated action last season, his confidence may never come back . . . JIMMY BUTLER will still play major minutes this year, though Chicago's added depth on the wing means he's no longer a candidate to lead the league in playing time . . . KIRK HINRICH will return to a straight back-up role. His defense guarantees him minutes at both guard spots in a reserve role . . . TONY SNELL was inconsistent as a rookie, but has the defensive skill set to play solid minutes . . . AARON BROOKS gives the Bulls a more offense-heavy option to lead the second unit. He has his work cut out for him to claim the role D.J. Augustin held last season. FORWARDS: Despite the rough end to his Lakers career, PAU GASOL still has something left in the tank. He will see fewer minutes in a deep Bulls frontcourt, but he's a great fit on the offensive end . . . It seems like only a matter of time before MIKE DUNLEAVY relinquishes his starting spot. The Bulls now have plenty of shooters on this roster . . . TAJ GIBSON will reprise his sixth-man role. He'll be one of the league's top reserves; talent-wise he's a borderline All-Star . . . Rookie DOUG McDERMOTT will supplant Dunleavy once he grasps head coach Tom Thibodeau's defensive concepts. McDermott is an elite shooter who can get by defensively . . . NIKOLA MIROTIC might have some growing pains, but the Euro star can play the 3 or stretch-4 and has a very good offensive game. CENTERS: JOAKIM NOAH is an elite center, as he's outstanding defensively and has developed into one of the best passing big men in the NBA. The Bulls will do what they can to keep him fresh for the postseason, a luxury they have with Gasol and Mirotic adding depth to the frontcourt rotation. NAZR MOHAMMED is back as a big body with the ability to consistently keep the bench warm.

(CORRECTS Knicks to playing 69th season)

*Knicks-Bulls Preview* ======================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

New York (14-59) at Chicago (44-29), 8:00 p.m. EDT

Finally healthy and playing up to their own expectations, the Chicago Bulls are focused on extending their positive stretch rather than worrying about where they'll be seeded in the playoffs.

That shouldn't be much of a problem with the injury-ravaged New York Knicks coming to the United Center.

While the Bulls go after their 24th win in 27 home games in the once-heated rivalry Saturday night, the league-worst Knicks hope to avoid setting a franchise single-season record for futility.

Playing without Derrick Rose, Jimmy Butler and Taj Gibson, Chicago (44-29) trailed Toronto by one game in the race for the Eastern Conference's third seed following a 1-5 stretch from March 6-15.

The Bulls, however, have since won four of five to move ahead of the Atlantic Division champion Raptors. They shot a season-high 60.8 percent and made 12 of 23 from 3-point range in Wednesday's 116-103 victory at Toronto.

Despite the resurgence, Butler said the Bulls aren't playing with playoff positioning in mind.

"I think we can beat anybody," the first-time All-Star said. "I don't think it matters what seed we end up in. We just want to win as many games and get in a rhythm and get rolling heading into the playoffs."

Butler finished with 23 points on 7-of-8 shooting after he had 19 while missing 14 of 20 two nights earlier in his first game since missing 11 with a sprained elbow. He's averaged 23.7 points in his past three meetings with the Knicks.

Gibson had two points in 14 minutes Wednesday in his fourth game back from a 10-game absence due to an ankle injury. He's lost playing time to rookie forward Nikola Mirotic, who is scoring 20.6 per game over his last 14.

Rose, sidelined after knee surgery, is hoping to start taking contact in practice as soon as next week. Aaron Brooks has done a solid job filling in at point guard with 17.5 points per game in his last 10.

With Rose and Gibson out, Butler scored a career-high 35 and Pau Gasol added 20 points and five blocks in a 103-97 home win over the Knicks on Dec. 18. Gasol also had 21 points and 11 rebounds and Gibson contributed 22 and eight in a 104-80 road victory in the season opener for both clubs Oct. 29.

Chicago has won seven straight home matchups and is 23-3 versus New York at the United Center since March 2001.

The Knicks have a 2 1/2-game hold on the NBA's worst record after dropping their last six. They played without Carmelo Anthony, Jose Calderon, Alexey Shved, Travis Wear and Tim Hardaway Jr. in Friday's 96-92 home defeat to Boston.

New York (14-59) is on the verge of becoming the first team in the franchise's 69-year history to lose 60 games.

"It's a tough situation," said forward Andrea Bargnani, who had a season-high 25 points. "Everybody knows that. We can't think about the record. We just have to keep our heads up and keep playing."

Although Bargnani is averaging 17.3 points over his last 14 games, the Knicks have scored 84.8 per game on 39.9 percent shooting - including a 32.0 mark from 3-point range - over their last five.

That doesn't bode well heading into a matchup with a Chicago team that has allowed an average of 95.9 points in its last 23 games after giving up an uncharacteristic 102.8 per game over the previous 17.
