KEY GAME INFORMATION
ST LOUIS: ST. LOUIS (AP) - Last October, the St. Louis Cardinals were sufficiently flush with arms that they carried rookie Shelby Miller and deposed closer Edward Mujica in ceremonial roles and made it to Game 6 of the World Series against Boston.
After leading major league rookies with 15 wins, Miller was limited to one postseason inning due to concerns about a heavy workload. Mujica was used only in mop-up duty after mid-September.
The National League champions are perhaps even deeper, across the board, entering opening day March 31 at Cincinnati. The team that tied for the major league high with 97 wins has a surplus of viable candidates.
''I think we have the potential to be great,'' said ace Adam Wainwright, who won 19 games and finished second in NL Cy Young balloting. ''We just have to go out there, not listen to the hype, and perform.''
The 32-year-old Wainwright qualifies as the grizzled leader of a rotation that could include three members coming off big rookie debuts. Michael Wacha was a postseason sensation and the NLCS MVP, Miller went wire-to-wire as the fifth starter and Carlos Martinez, who's had an impressive spring, moved into the setup role when fellow rookie Trevor Rosenthal took over as closer.
Wacha and Martinez are 22, Miller and Rosenthal just 23.
There's also 15-game winner Lance Lynn, who struck out 10 in four innings of his last spring training start, and lefty Jaime Garcia could fit into the mix sometime in April coming off shoulder surgery. And don't forget Joe Kelly, another rookie who won 10 games and was the rotation's strongest starter much of the second half.
And one of the National League's best lineups, too.
Much is expected from a loyal fan base that extends several states, and that's OK.
''Our expectations,'' Lynn said, ''are higher than theirs.''
WASHINGTON: WASHINGTON (AP) - Thanks in part to No. 1 overall draft picks Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper, the 2012 Washington Nationals were considered an up-and-coming team, perhaps a year or two away from contending.
So what did they do? Went out and led the majors with 98 wins.
Thanks to that quick rise, the 2013 Nationals became a popular pick to go to the World Series. So what did they do? Stumbled at the start and missed out on the playoffs.
Now here come the 2014 Nationals, featuring largely the same roster - including Strasburg on the mound, and Harper in left field, both feeling good after offseason surgery - and with rookie manager Matt Williams replacing Davey Johnson, he of the ''World Series or bust'' proclamation.
One key difference: The club knows what it's like to experience a truly disappointing, worse-than-they-were-supposed-to-be season for the first time since moving from Montreal in 2005.
''We got ahead of ourselves a little bit. My take on it was always: Last year in spring training, we had expectations on ourselves, really, for the first time, and we thought we were better, maybe, than we were,'' reliever Tyler Clippard said. ''We came into the season expecting to win, which is a good thing. But at the same time, we might not have went out there and earned it, like we should have.''
Yes, the team that got Strasburg and Harper thanks to consecutive 100-loss seasons is trying to deal with lofty goals.
''To see the organization from basically, literally, the ground up, improve is something I kind of take pride in, because when I signed, people would be like, `Oh, you play for the Expos and the Nationals,' and they'd be like, `Uh, OK, I don't know them,''' said shortstop Ian Desmond, drafted by Montreal in 2004. ''And now, it's like there's some pride behind playing for the Washington Nationals.''

*Cardinals-Nationals Preview* =============================

By JEFF BARTL STATS Writer

St. Louis (10-6) at Washington (9-7), 1:05 p.m. EDT

Lance Lynn has made a habit of adding to his win column in his two-plus seasons as a starter for the St. Louis Cardinals, though he's been given some leeway due to the amount of run support he's received.

That's just fine with manager Mike Matheny.

Visiting St. Louis looks to bounce back from a rare loss to the Washington Nationals as Lynn takes the mound Saturday.

Lynn (3-0, 4.00 ERA) has 36 victories since the start of 2012, tying him with teammate Adam Wainwright for the most in the NL in that span. He's won each of his starts this season, with the Cardinals (10-7) providing him with an average of 7.00 runs.

The right-hander didn't need much help Monday, though, as he gave up three hits and struck out 11 in seven innings of a 4-0 win over Milwaukee.

Lynn has won at least his first five decisions in each of the past two seasons.

"A guy who finds a way to win, to me, needs to be given a lot of credit because that's the ultimate goal for us," Matheny said. "Whether you're getting a lot of support or throwing a shutout, one way or another, you're finding a way to get it done. Lance has done that."

Run support helped Lynn pick up a victory in his only start against the Nationals, as he gave up four runs and six hits - including homers to Bryce Harper and Danny Espinosa - while hitting two batters in a 10-4 win Sept. 30, 2012. He's 2-2 with a 9.28 ERA in six appearances versus Washington, including the postseason.

St. Louis was done in by a lack of offense for the second time in three games Friday, falling 3-1 to the Nationals (10-7) while having its eight-game winning streak, including the playoffs, against Washington snapped.

A season high-tying three errors didn't help, with catcher Yadier Molina, winner of six straight Gold Gloves, making one and Matt Carpenter another that led to two unearned runs in the seventh.

The Nationals took whatever they could get after being two-hit by Wainwright in an 8-0 loss in the series opener Thursday.

"They're a tremendous team. They've gotten the best of us in the past," said Anthony Rendon, who hit a solo homer. "We're trying to change that."

Gio Gonzalez retired the last 11 men he faced and became just the second Nationals starter to throw seven innings after Jordan Zimmermann did it in Monday's 9-2 win over Miami.

Zimmermann (1-0, 5.27 ERA) will be on the mound Saturday after giving up two runs and striking out seven. His previous start marked the shortest of his career, as he allowed five runs in 1 2-3 innings before the Nationals rallied for a 10-7 victory over the Marlins on April 9.

"It was a lot better," Zimmermann said. "When I'm able to get ahead, I can throw everything else where I want and when I want. When I fall behind, that's when I run into trouble."

The right-hander has struggled to do anything well when he faces the Cardinals, going 0-4 with an 8.83 ERA in seven starts, including the playoffs.

Molina is 8 for 16 and Jon Jay is 6 for 14 off Zimmermann.
