KEY GAME INFORMATION
BALTIMORE: BALTIMORE (AP) - For the first time in 17 years, the Baltimore Orioles open a new baseball season as defending AL East champions.
The Orioles can only hope for better results than in 1998, when they followed a wire-to-wire run to the division crown with a 79-83 flop - launching a franchise-record run of 14 straight losing seasons.
Although Baltimore lost slugger Nelson Cruz, Gold Glove right fielder Nick Markakis and setup man Andrew Miller from a club that last year went 96-66 and advanced to the AL Championship Series, manager Buck Showalter has no intention of disappointing a fan base that has embraced a team coming off its second playoff appearance in three seasons.
''They come to Camden to watch us win,'' Showalter said. ''There's no more passionate, sincere group of fans than we have. Nothing would kick me in the chest more than for us to regress. I want to keep going forward.''
Baltimore made only one significant offseason acquisition, picking up outfielder Travis Snider in a trade with Pittsburgh. The big question is, do the Orioles still have enough good players to stay atop the AL East?
''It definitely stinks to lose Markakis, what he brought to the clubhouse, and Cruz, what he brought to the field. But we've got to move on,'' said Steve Pearce, who's coming off the best year of his career. ''You look around the locker room and there's a lot of talent here. All our pitching's returned, so we still have a really good team.''
The Orioles are counting on third baseman Manny Machado and catcher Matt Wieters to bounce back from injury-shortened seasons and for first baseman Chris Davis to regain the form he showed in 2013 before slumping miserably last year.
None of the three were available in the postseason, when the Orioles swept Detroit in the division playoff before being bounced in four games by the Kansas City Royals.
Davis' absence will extend into opening day, on April 6 in Tampa Bay, when he concludes his 25-game suspension for using a banned amphetamine. Wieters is expected to start the season in the disabled list as he continues his recovery from elbow ligament surgery, but at least Machado appears on target to make up for lost time.
The offense will be a work in progress, but the Orioles hope they won't need heavy hitting to back a starting rotation that remains entirely intact. Chris Tillman, Wei-Yin Chen, Bud Norris and Miguel Gonzalez combined to go 54-29 last year, and the foursome could get some help from right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez, who's looked good in spring training after stumbling in his Orioles debut last year.
The bullpen will be anchored by Zach Britton, who had 37 saves in 41 tries during his first season as a closer.
Some things to know about the 2015 Orioles:
TOP OF THE LINEUP: Alejandro De Aza is expected to take over for Markakis as the leadoff hitter. De Aza is faster than Markakis and had a .341 on-base percentage after being obtained from the White Sox before the trade deadline.
''I will just let the game dictate what to do,'' he said.
What De Aza needs to do is get on base ahead of Machado, Davis and cleanup hitter Adam Jones.
DAVIS SEEKS A FRESH START: Slowed by a muscle strain near his rib cage, frustrated by defensive shifts and embarrassed by his suspension, Davis is raring to go in 2015.
''I'm in such a different situation this year than I was last year, having been off for a month and a half more than these guys,'' Davis said.
He says his teammates have forgiven him for using Adderall, which led to his untimely suspension.
''The guys are just ready to move on and focus on what we need to accomplish this year,'' Davis said.
SNIDER STEPS IN: With Markakis gone, Snider will attempt to fill the void in right field.
He hit .264 with 13 homers, 15 doubles and 38 RBIs in 140 games with Pittsburgh last season.
''I'm not here to replace Nick Markakis, but to be another man on this roster and to come out here every single day with the goal of getting better,'' Snider said.
MACHADO CONFIDENT: After playing only 82 games last year, Machado is ready to go after knee surgery.
''I feel great,'' the 2013 All-Star said. ''I'm doing everything. I'm stealing bases and hitting the ball well, playing good defense, doing everything I've got to do to get ready for the year.''
TORONTO: TORONTO (AP) - The upcoming season for the Toronto Blue Jays seems destined to be defined by the one young pitcher who'll miss it and the two even younger guys who'll try to replace him.
Toronto's plans for ending baseball's longest active playoff drought took a serious hit when Marcus Stroman suffered a season-ending knee injury in spring training.
The second-year right-hander tore a ligament when his knee buckled as he backed off a bunt during a pregame fielding drill. He's out for the year after undergoing surgery.
''It's tough,'' Stroman said. ''I just feel like I let my team down. I've worked harder than I ever had this offseason.''
The injury changed Toronto's thinking about 22-year-old right-hander Aaron Sanchez, who might have been closing games rather than starting them if Stroman was still healthy, and 21-year-old lefty Daniel Norris, the van-dwelling surfer dude.
The two pitchers now look likely to get their shot in Toronto's rotation, slotting in behind 200-inning workhorses R.A Dickey and Mark Buehrle, and 24-year-old right-hander Drew Hutchison.
How successful they are could well determine what happens to the Blue Jays, out of the postseason since winning their second straight World Series in 1993 and the only team that hasn't reached the playoffs this century.
''We may have to rely on a young guy who may not be proven,'' manager John Gibbons said. ''Stro was a baby, too, but a special guy.''
Sanchez has already shown signs that he could also be special. He excelled out of the bullpen in 24 games last season, posting three saves and a 1.09 ERA in 33 innings, striking out 27 while walking nine and holding opponents to a .128 average.
With the increased demands of a starting role lying ahead, the hard-throwing Sanchez has spent this spring refining his slider.
''With the way he throws, it could turn into a big strikeout pitch for him,'' Gibbons said.
The Blue Jays are also high on Norris, currently better known for spending his winters searching for prime surfing spots while living out of a 1978 Volkswagen camper van nicknamed ''Shaggy.''
''He's a different bird,'' Gibbons said. ''Anytime you live in a van, I wouldn't say that's normal.''
Norris had an abnormal 2014 season, rising from Class A to the majors after going 12-2 with a 2.53 ERA at three minor league stops. He underwent elbow surgery last October to remove bone spurs, and expects to be better this year than the pitcher who made five appearances for the Blue Jays in September.
''He's a student of the game,'' Gibbons said. ''He's a very smart kid and he's grounded. He's got the most important thing: He's got a great arm.''
After Jose Reyes and the Blue Jays went 83-79, here's what else to watch as they try to move up:
MIGHTY MIGUEL: Sanchez and Norris aren't the only impressive young arms expected to break camp with the Blue Jays. Right-hander Miguel Castro, 20, didn't allow a run in his first five spring appearances, striking out eight and walking none while allowing three hits over nine innings. A hard thrower who stands an imposing 6-foot-5, Castro has put himself in position to jump from Class A, where he went 8-3 with a 2.68 ERA last season, all the way to the majors. ''He looks like a seasoned vet out there, under control, very relaxed,'' Gibbons said.
NEW GUYS, NEW FOCUS: Toronto strengthened its lineup over the winter by signing free agent catcher Russell Martin to a five-year, $82 million contract and acquiring All-Star third baseman Josh Donaldson from Oakland. Slugger Jose Bautista has praised the newcomers for making a difference in the clubhouse with their winning pedigree and intense focus. ''We need something along those lines here every now and then,'' Bautista said. ''It's good to have guys to whom winning matters.''
BLOCKING THE PLATE: Adding Martin gave the Blue Jays a logjam at catcher, where incumbent Dioner Navarro is signed through 2015 and Josh Thole is Dickey's knuckleball specialist. Martin has worked hard this spring to prove he can handle Dickey's floater, which could mean Thole is ticketed for Triple-A. Or, Toronto may yet trade the switch-hitting Navarro to open room at DH for Edwin Encarnacion, who has been slowed this spring by a balky back and may not be able to handle regular duty at first base.

*Orioles-Blue Jays Preview* ===========================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

Baltimore (64-69) at Toronto (76-57), 7:07 p.m. EDT

AL East opponents Baltimore and Toronto have been on virtually opposite paths as the season starts to wind down.

The Orioles' chances at a third postseason appearance in four years have all but slipped away, while the Blue Jays look poised to end baseball's longest active playoff drought.

Baltimore opens a pivotal stretch that figures to decide the fate of its season Friday night when it starts a three-game series at Toronto.

The Orioles (64-69) have plummeted out of the division race, dropping 12 of 14 to fall 12 games back of the first-place Blue Jays (76-57). They've hit .217 in that span with 85 strikeouts in the last eight, and a wild-card berth looks increasingly unattainable as well with a 6 1/2-game deficit separating them from Texas.

Adam Jones has hit .121 with 13 strikeouts in his last nine games, while Chris Davis has struck out 22 times in his past 11.

"How do you get of it? That's the beauty of this game," Jones said. "The way you do it is you collectively come together and go out there and beat ... somebody else instead of getting your tails handed to you."

After this series, Baltimore's nine-game stretch against the AL's top three teams continues with three-game sets versus New York and Kansas City. The Orioles stopped a six-game skid with a 7-3 victory over Tampa Bay on Wednesday, which came after they had scored fewer than four runs in 12 of 13.

Ubaldo Jimenez's freefall has mirrored the Orioles' collapse. Jimenez (9-9, 4.34 ERA) is 2-5 with a 7.50 ERA in his last nine outings, surrendering 10 homers in 48 innings. He had given up eight over the previous 99 1-3 while posting a 2.81 ERA - which would have been the lowest mark of his career over a full season.

He allowed four runs and eight hits while needing 92 pitches to get through 5 2-3 innings of Saturday's 4-3 loss at Texas.

Jimenez performed like a completely different pitcher in three meetings with Toronto in April and May, going 2-1 with a 2.84 ERA while striking out 23 in 19 innings. He's 5-4 with a 4.10 ERA in 12 career matchups - 11 starts.

A number of Blue Jays have struggled against the right-hander with Jose Bautista going 2 for 29 and Josh Donaldson 2 for 15.

Donaldson has batted .404 with 24 RBIs and 13 extra-base hits in his last 14 games for Toronto, winner of 26 of 32. The Blue Jays, who own a 1 1/2-game edge over the Yankees as they seek their first playoff appearance since 1993, are averaging 8.0 runs during a 10-2 stretch.

They're hoping Drew Hutchison (13-2, 4.87 ERA) continues his night-and-day contrast at home and on the road, at least for his sixth straight start at Rogers Centre. The disparity between his home (2.46) and road (9.00) ERAs is the largest for a pitcher with at least 10 starts both at home and on the road going back to at least 1914.

He improved to 11-1 in Toronto with Saturday's 15-1 win over Detroit, limiting the Tigers to one run over seven innings.

Manny Machado hasn't been quite as cold as other Orioles, though he's hitting .243 with four extra-base hits in his last 17 games. He's batted .500 with three homers, six doubles and 10 RBIs in his last eight games against the Blue Jays, however.

These teams haven't met since June 19-21 when Baltimore took two of three in Toronto, though the Blue Jays lead the series 7-5.
