KEY GAME INFORMATION
PHILADELPHIA: CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - No team is picked to win fewer games this season than the Philadelphia Phillies.
Rebuilding isn't easy.
After dominating the NL East from 2007-11, capturing five division titles, two pennants and one World Series championship, the Phillies have spiraled downward - all the way to the bottom.
Oddsmakers set Philadelphia's win total for 2015 at 67 or 68. Things could get even uglier if ace Cole Hamels is traded - a very realistic possibility - along with other veterans still hanging around. Ryan Howard and Jonathan Papelbon are available. Chase Utley and Carlos Ruiz also could be moved. Jimmy Rollins was the first member of the nucleus to go when he was traded to the Dodgers in December.
The goal this season is figuring out which players will be part of the future. Cody Asche, Maikel Franco, Freddy Galvis, Cesar Hernandez, Darin Ruf and Odubel Herrera are among those will get opportunities. Asche and Galvis form the left side of the infield. Franco will begin the season at Triple-A. Hernandez and Herrera will start off as role players. Ruf still is hoping to get a chance to play regularly.
''I'm very pleased with the demeanor of the players in the clubhouse,'' general manager Ruben Amaro, Jr. said. ''Young players are stepping up and gaining confidence. It's all about experience and that's what these young guys are going to get and hopefully they take the ball and run with it.''
Howard, Utley and Rollins each were homegrown players who developed into the best players at their position in franchise history. Those are big shoes for guys like Asche, Galvis and others to fill.
But they're up for the challenge.
''The faces might be different, the names might be different and they might not be big names, but the mentality is the same,'' Asche said. ''We're still out there trying to earn it every day and we're going to have our bad days and good days, but I guarantee there's no one in that clubhouse not trying to earn something.''
Here are some things to know about the Phillies entering the season:
---
REPLACING J-ROLL
Jimmy Rollins was a three-time All-Star shortstop and the 2007 NL MVP. Beyond the stats, he was a team leader who brought swagger to the clubhouse. Freddy Galvis takes his spot while top prospect J.P. Crawford is groomed in the minors. Galvis is an excellent defensive player whether he's playing second base, shortstop, third base or even the outfield. The switch-hitter has a .218 career average with 13 homers and 55 RBIs in 514 at-bats. Galvis has gap power - 42 extra-base hits - but needs to improve his average and stay on top of the ball at the plate.
---
FINISHING OFF
If starting pitchers get through six innings with a lead, the Phillies may win more games than people think. Their bullpen is a major strength. Jonathan Papelbon converted 39 of 43 save chances last year. Setup man Ken Giles brings a 100 mph heater to the eighth inning. Lefty Jake Diekman has a power arm in the seventh or eighth and righty Justin De Fratus is solid.
---
STARTING FIVE
Before Cliff Lee's elbow injury, the rotation was quite formidable with Cole Hamels, Lee and Aaron Harang. Now, Harang moves up to No. 2 and journeyman Jerome Williams takes the third spot ahead of David Buchanan. Several guys are competing for the No. 5 spot while Chad Billingsley works his way back from two elbow operations.
---
POWER OUTTAGE
Marlon Byrd led the Phillies with 25 homers last year before he was traded to Cincinnati in the offseason. Howard hit 23, but the former NL MVP looked good in spring training. If he sticks around, he should supply more power. But Chase Utley only hit 11 homers last year and Domonic Brown dropped from 27 to 10. This won't be the 2009 Phillies who had four guys hit 30 homers and five hit 20. But there's a chance they'll get a few more in the 15-20 range.
---
CALLING THE SHOTS
Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg is finding out it was easier for him to play the game than to win games as the manager. Sandberg is 93-111 since replacing Charlie Manuel in August 2013.
TORONTO: TORONTO (AP) - The upcoming season for the Toronto Blue Jays seems destined to be defined by the one young pitcher who'll miss it and the two even younger guys who'll try to replace him.
Toronto's plans for ending baseball's longest active playoff drought took a serious hit when Marcus Stroman suffered a season-ending knee injury in spring training.
The second-year right-hander tore a ligament when his knee buckled as he backed off a bunt during a pregame fielding drill. He's out for the year after undergoing surgery.
''It's tough,'' Stroman said. ''I just feel like I let my team down. I've worked harder than I ever had this offseason.''
The injury changed Toronto's thinking about 22-year-old right-hander Aaron Sanchez, who might have been closing games rather than starting them if Stroman was still healthy, and 21-year-old lefty Daniel Norris, the van-dwelling surfer dude.
The two pitchers now look likely to get their shot in Toronto's rotation, slotting in behind 200-inning workhorses R.A Dickey and Mark Buehrle, and 24-year-old right-hander Drew Hutchison.
How successful they are could well determine what happens to the Blue Jays, out of the postseason since winning their second straight World Series in 1993 and the only team that hasn't reached the playoffs this century.
''We may have to rely on a young guy who may not be proven,'' manager John Gibbons said. ''Stro was a baby, too, but a special guy.''
Sanchez has already shown signs that he could also be special. He excelled out of the bullpen in 24 games last season, posting three saves and a 1.09 ERA in 33 innings, striking out 27 while walking nine and holding opponents to a .128 average.
With the increased demands of a starting role lying ahead, the hard-throwing Sanchez has spent this spring refining his slider.
''With the way he throws, it could turn into a big strikeout pitch for him,'' Gibbons said.
The Blue Jays are also high on Norris, currently better known for spending his winters searching for prime surfing spots while living out of a 1978 Volkswagen camper van nicknamed ''Shaggy.''
''He's a different bird,'' Gibbons said. ''Anytime you live in a van, I wouldn't say that's normal.''
Norris had an abnormal 2014 season, rising from Class A to the majors after going 12-2 with a 2.53 ERA at three minor league stops. He underwent elbow surgery last October to remove bone spurs, and expects to be better this year than the pitcher who made five appearances for the Blue Jays in September.
''He's a student of the game,'' Gibbons said. ''He's a very smart kid and he's grounded. He's got the most important thing: He's got a great arm.''
After Jose Reyes and the Blue Jays went 83-79, here's what else to watch as they try to move up:
MIGHTY MIGUEL: Sanchez and Norris aren't the only impressive young arms expected to break camp with the Blue Jays. Right-hander Miguel Castro, 20, didn't allow a run in his first five spring appearances, striking out eight and walking none while allowing three hits over nine innings. A hard thrower who stands an imposing 6-foot-5, Castro has put himself in position to jump from Class A, where he went 8-3 with a 2.68 ERA last season, all the way to the majors. ''He looks like a seasoned vet out there, under control, very relaxed,'' Gibbons said.
NEW GUYS, NEW FOCUS: Toronto strengthened its lineup over the winter by signing free agent catcher Russell Martin to a five-year, $82 million contract and acquiring All-Star third baseman Josh Donaldson from Oakland. Slugger Jose Bautista has praised the newcomers for making a difference in the clubhouse with their winning pedigree and intense focus. ''We need something along those lines here every now and then,'' Bautista said. ''It's good to have guys to whom winning matters.''
BLOCKING THE PLATE: Adding Martin gave the Blue Jays a logjam at catcher, where incumbent Dioner Navarro is signed through 2015 and Josh Thole is Dickey's knuckleball specialist. Martin has worked hard this spring to prove he can handle Dickey's floater, which could mean Thole is ticketed for Triple-A. Or, Toronto may yet trade the switch-hitting Navarro to open room at DH for Edwin Encarnacion, who has been slowed this spring by a balky back and may not be able to handle regular duty at first base.

*Phillies-Blue Jays Preview* ============================

By TOM CASTRO STATS Senior Editor

Philadelphia (37-63) at Toronto (50-50), 7:07 p.m. EDT

Running out of opportunities to make a move in the AL East race, the Toronto Blue Jays made a big trade overnight by acquiring five-time All-Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki.

Following another costly loss, the Jays try to get back on track Tuesday night when they open a two-game home series with the last-place Philadelphia Phillies, who nevertheless have surged over the past two weeks.

Toronto (50-50) shipped Jose Reyes to Colorado for the talented but oft-injured Tulowitzki, who is hitting .300 with 12 homers and 53 RBIs this season, and reliever LaTroy Hawkins. Tulowitzki is under contract through 2020 - he's making $20 million in 2015 and each of the next four seasons before being owed $14 million in the final year - while Reyes is owed approximately $52 million through 2017.

The Blue Jays continued their up-and-down play Sunday by blowing a 5-3 lead and losing 6-5 in 10 innings at Seattle, the lowlight being a triple play caused by a baserunning blunder. The Jays have gone 9-14 in their last 23.

First-place New York, meanwhile, has baseball's best record in July and its largest lead of the season.

"We've got to go out there and play every day," left-hander Mark Buehrle said. "The Yankees, they're not giving up. We've got to obviously just play our game and hopefully win games when they start losing games. I don't think they're going to go on the roll that they are right now, but it could get to the point where it's too late. We've got to keep our heads up and keep on playing. We ran into some good teams and some good pitching. Just the way it goes."

The Blue Jays have allowed 17 runs in the past three games, with the bullpen giving up three in 3 2-3 innings Sunday. Toronto's 4.07 ERA is near the bottom of the AL.

The club should very happy to be starting a 10-game homestand given its 28-19 record at Rogers Centre. The Jays' struggles on the road have been one of the major factors in their inability to keep up in the race.

"It's disappointing," manager John Gibbons said after his team finished 3-3 on its West Coast trip. "We're not in a position to do this. Time's not on our side. We're chasing some pretty good teams. Frustrating, tough game."

Felix Doubront's last two starts probably won't encourage much optimism from Gibbons on Tuesday. The left-hander has given up seven earned runs over 9 2-3 innings of those games, both on the road.

Doubront (1-0, 4.34 ERA) threw 92 pitches in just 4 2-3 innings Wednesday, allowing two earned runs, seven hits and two walks in a 4-3 loss to Oakland. He's never faced Philadelphia.

He'll likely need be better against the Phillies (37-63), who despite their MLB-worst record have won eight of nine since the All-Star break and scored five or more runs in six of the last seven. They completed an impressive road sweep of the Cubs in emphatic fashion Sunday, winning 11-5 the day after Cole Hamels delivered a no-hitter.

Ryan Howard homered for the second straight day, Maikel Franco also went deep and had three RBIs and Domonic Brown drove in three for Philadelphia, which piled up 17 hits.

Twenty-one of the club's 40 hits in the three-game series went for extra bases.

" ... The reason you play the young guys ... You kind of hope it comes around in this manner to where you're putting some runs on the board and consistent at-bats," interim manager Pete Mackanin said. "And we're getting more consistent at-bats from these guys, and I think that's why we're scoring more runs."

Rookie left-hander Adam Morgan (1-2, 4.28) is set to make his sixth start for the Phillies after lasting 4 1-3 innings and giving up three runs and nine hits in a 5-4 home victory over Tampa Bay on Wednesday.

Trade rumors continue to swirl around Philadelphia, which could move Hamels, closer Jonathan Papelbon and others before Friday's deadline.

Toronto has won eight straight meetings in this series.
