| | | CHI WHITE SOX: 2016: 78-84, fourth place.
Manager: Rick Renteria (first season).
He's Here: RHP Lucas Giolito, INF Yoan Moncada, LHP Derek Holland, RHP Reynaldo Lopez, C Geovany Soto, OF Peter Bourjos.
He's Outta Here: Manager Robin Ventura, LHP Chris Sale, OF Adam Eaton, OF Austin Jackson, DH Justin Morneau, C Alex Avila, RHP Matt Albers.
Projected lineup: CF Leury Garcia (.229, 1, 5 in 18 games, 48 ABs; .313, 6, 35, 18 SBs in 84 games at Triple-A Charlotte) or Jacob May (.266, 1, 24, 19 SBs in 83 games at Triple-A Charlotte), SS Tim Anderson (.283, 9, 30), LF Melky Cabrera (.296, 14, 86), 1B Jose Abreu (.293, 25, 100), 3B Todd Frazier (.225, 40, 98), RF Avisail Garcia (.245, 12, 51), DH Matt Davidson (missed much of last season with broken right foot), C Omar Narvaez (.267, 1, 10), 2B Tyler Saladino (.282, 8, 38).
Rotation: LH Jose Quintana (13-12, 3.20 ERA), RH Miguel Gonzalez (5-8, 3.73), LH Derek Holland (7-9, 4.95 ERA in 22 games with Texas), RH James Shields (6-19, 5.85 in 33 starts with Padres and White Sox), LH Carlos Rodon (9-10, 4.04).
Key relievers: RH David Robertson (5-3, 3.47, 37/44 saves), RH Nate Jones (5-3, 2.29, 3 saves), LH Dan Jennings (4-3, 2.08), RH Zach Putnam (1-0, 2.30), RH Michael Ynoa (1-0, 3.00).
Hot Spot: Triple-A Charlotte. With Giolito, Lopez and Moncada likely to begin the season in Triple-A, many White Sox fans might keep a closer watch on the Knights than the big league club. The development of the franchise's suddenly rich minor league system will help determine the trajectory of Chicago's new rebuilding project.
Outlook: Lots of losses and trades. Quintana and Frazier likely will be shipped out at some point this season, and Robertson also could be on the move in the right deal. The White Sox seem fully committed to a major overhaul, and they added several prospects when they traded away Sale and Eaton over the winter. But it could be a rough couple of years while general manager Rick Hahn tries to establish a more reliable pipeline of talent throughout the organization. In the meantime, the White Sox still have Anderson, who was impressive in his first major league stint last year. Abreu is going for his fourth straight season of at least 25 homers and 100 RBIs. | | TEXAS: 2016: 95-67, first place
Manager: Jeff Banister (third season)
Who's new? 1B Mike Napoli, 1B James Loney, INF Will Middlebrooks, RHP Andrew Cashner, RHP Tyson Ross, RHP Mike Hauschild
Who's gone? 1B Mitch Moreland, INF/OF Ian Desmond, OF/DH Carlos Beltran, RHP Derek Holland, RHP Colby Lewis, RHP Shawn Tolleson, RHP Lucas Harrell
Projected lineup: CF Carlos Gomez (.231, 13 HR, 53 RBI, 18 SB in 118 games with Astros and Rangers), DH Shin-Soo Choo (.242, 7, 17, 6 in 48 games), 3B Adrian Beltre (.300, 32, 104), 1B Mike Napoli (.239, 34, 101 with Indians), 2B Rougned Odor (.271, 33, 88, 14 SB), C Jonathan Lucroy (.292, 24, 81 with Brewers and Rangers), RF Nomar Mazara (.266, 20, 64), SS Elvis Andrus (.302, 8, 69, 24 SB), LF Jurickson Profar (.239, 5, 20) or Ryan Rua (.258, 8, 22, 9 SB)
Rotation: LH Cole Hamels (15-5, 3.32 ERA), RH Yu Darvish (7-5, 3.42 in 17 games), LH Martin Perez (10-11, 4.39), RH A.J. Griffin (7-4, 5.07), RH Andrew Cashner (5-11, 5.25 with Padres and Marlins)
Key relievers: RH Sam Dyson (3-2, 2.43, 38/43 SV), RH Matt Bush (7-2, 2.48), RH Jeremy Jeffress (27/28 SV with Brewers and Rangers), RH Tony Barnette (7-3, 2.09), LH Alex Claudio (4-1, 2.79), RH Keone Kela (5-1, 6.09)
Hot spots: Designated hitter and left field. Choo, Napoli and Joey Gallo are all candidates to DH. Gallo, a perennial prospect with prodigious power, can make it interesting by seizing his first-ever Opening Day roster spot. Otherwise Napoli (a first baseman) and Choo (an outfielder) can switch off as needed. Moving Desmond to the outfield was successful enough last year that the Rangers are taking a similar approach with Profar. The oft-injured 24-year-old will try to break camp as a left fielder, platooning with Rua.
Outlook: Coming off back-to-back division titles, the Rangers begin 2017 with a weakened farm system and the footsteps of the Astros and Mariners passing them by ' or at least catching up. There's still a lot to like here. Napoli was a huge bargain on a $6 million contract following his 34-homer season in Cleveland. He'll join Beltre and Odor to form a dangerous middle of the order. Darvish is entering his first full season back from Tommy John surgery, and he and catcher Lucroy are entering their long-awaited walk years. This isn't the deepest roster in the AL but it's capable of winning another division title if its stars can avoid the disabled list. |
| | Rangers look to keep rolling vs. White Sox
ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Texas Rangers are getting offense from everywhere in their bid to remain in the American League playoff race. The struggling Chicago White Sox are getting it from one player with a bright future. Rookie Nicky Delmonico has reached base in 13 of his first 14 games heading into Friday's game against a Texas team that's trying to extend a winning streak to five after a 9-8 victory Thursday in the opener of the four-game series. Delmonico, who has primarily played in the outfield, was the first player in team history to reach base in his first 13 games. The streak ended when he went 0-for-4 on Thursday. While there are no playoff hopes for the White Sox, losers of five straight, Delmonico is certainly providing hope for Chicago. "He's a young man (who has) worked on a whole lot of things," White Sox manager Rick Renteria said. "He's mature. He's got it. I call it the 'it' factor. There's something about him. He's a baseball player that's got skillsets that can apply in practical terms." Delmonico flashed that "it" factor Wednesday night when he became only the second White Sox player since 2006 to record a multi-homer game in his first 13 contests, joining teammate Jose Abreu. He also recorded three three-hit games in his first 14 starts. "I'm glad he started well," Renteria said. "You can't expect that kind of pace in terms of homers and all the things he's doing is something that you're going to see all the time. But it's there with him to be a consistent major league baseball player, I think." Chicago would love to see some consistency from Friday starter James Shields (2-4, 5.90 ERA). Shields is 1-4 with a 7.27 ERA over his last 10 starts, including 0-3 with a 7.54 ERA over his last seven. The good news for Shields is that he has had success against the hot-hitting Rangers, going 7-3 with a 2.66 ERA in 14 starts. In his last nine turns against Texas, he is 5-1 with a 1.63 ERA. While Shields is trending in the wrong direction, Texas right-hander Andrew Cashner (7-9, 3.32) is going strong. He's 3-1 over his last four starts; and, since the start of July, he's 4-2 with a 2.27 ERA. That's the fifth-lowest ERA in the American League in that span. Cashner has had no success against the White Sox, though. He has faced Chicago three times (one start) in his career but is 0-2 with a 5.63 ERA. But, with the way the Texas offense is going, Cashner doesn't have to be perfect. The Rangers have scored at least six runs in six of their last seven games, reaching double figures twice. The hot offense isn't just a week-long trend either, as the Rangers have scored at least four runs in 16 of their last 17 games. That has breathed life into their playoff hopes. "Everybody is doing their job," shortstop Elvis Andrus said. "Everybody is seeing pitches. We're all having good team at-bats, and we're wearing out a lot of pitchers. That's when we play the best, and that's why we're playing the best (baseball) of the season." |
