| |  | BALTIMORE: BALTIMORE (AP) - For the first time in 17 years, the Baltimore Orioles open a new baseball season as defending AL East champions.
The Orioles can only hope for better results than in 1998, when they followed a wire-to-wire run to the division crown with a 79-83 flop - launching a franchise-record run of 14 straight losing seasons.
Although Baltimore lost slugger Nelson Cruz, Gold Glove right fielder Nick Markakis and setup man Andrew Miller from a club that last year went 96-66 and advanced to the AL Championship Series, manager Buck Showalter has no intention of disappointing a fan base that has embraced a team coming off its second playoff appearance in three seasons.
''They come to Camden to watch us win,'' Showalter said. ''There's no more passionate, sincere group of fans than we have. Nothing would kick me in the chest more than for us to regress. I want to keep going forward.''
Baltimore made only one significant offseason acquisition, picking up outfielder Travis Snider in a trade with Pittsburgh. The big question is, do the Orioles still have enough good players to stay atop the AL East?
''It definitely stinks to lose Markakis, what he brought to the clubhouse, and Cruz, what he brought to the field. But we've got to move on,'' said Steve Pearce, who's coming off the best year of his career. ''You look around the locker room and there's a lot of talent here. All our pitching's returned, so we still have a really good team.''
The Orioles are counting on third baseman Manny Machado and catcher Matt Wieters to bounce back from injury-shortened seasons and for first baseman Chris Davis to regain the form he showed in 2013 before slumping miserably last year.
None of the three were available in the postseason, when the Orioles swept Detroit in the division playoff before being bounced in four games by the Kansas City Royals.
Davis' absence will extend into opening day, on April 6 in Tampa Bay, when he concludes his 25-game suspension for using a banned amphetamine. Wieters is expected to start the season in the disabled list as he continues his recovery from elbow ligament surgery, but at least Machado appears on target to make up for lost time.
The offense will be a work in progress, but the Orioles hope they won't need heavy hitting to back a starting rotation that remains entirely intact. Chris Tillman, Wei-Yin Chen, Bud Norris and Miguel Gonzalez combined to go 54-29 last year, and the foursome could get some help from right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez, who's looked good in spring training after stumbling in his Orioles debut last year.
The bullpen will be anchored by Zach Britton, who had 37 saves in 41 tries during his first season as a closer.
Some things to know about the 2015 Orioles:
TOP OF THE LINEUP: Alejandro De Aza is expected to take over for Markakis as the leadoff hitter. De Aza is faster than Markakis and had a .341 on-base percentage after being obtained from the White Sox before the trade deadline.
''I will just let the game dictate what to do,'' he said.
What De Aza needs to do is get on base ahead of Machado, Davis and cleanup hitter Adam Jones.
DAVIS SEEKS A FRESH START: Slowed by a muscle strain near his rib cage, frustrated by defensive shifts and embarrassed by his suspension, Davis is raring to go in 2015.
''I'm in such a different situation this year than I was last year, having been off for a month and a half more than these guys,'' Davis said.
He says his teammates have forgiven him for using Adderall, which led to his untimely suspension.
''The guys are just ready to move on and focus on what we need to accomplish this year,'' Davis said.
SNIDER STEPS IN: With Markakis gone, Snider will attempt to fill the void in right field.
He hit .264 with 13 homers, 15 doubles and 38 RBIs in 140 games with Pittsburgh last season.
''I'm not here to replace Nick Markakis, but to be another man on this roster and to come out here every single day with the goal of getting better,'' Snider said.
MACHADO CONFIDENT: After playing only 82 games last year, Machado is ready to go after knee surgery.
''I feel great,'' the 2013 All-Star said. ''I'm doing everything. I'm stealing bases and hitting the ball well, playing good defense, doing everything I've got to do to get ready for the year.'' | | TEXAS: When Yu Darvish pitched only one inning this spring before season-ending elbow surgery, the Texas Rangers were already off to an ominous start.
The Rangers lost their ace even before what they are still hoping will be a comeback season.
''There is no way to spin that, other than it's a tough deal for us. He's one of the best pitchers in the game,'' general manager Jon Daniels said this spring. ''That being said, it's one guy. It's not 17. Good teams and good organizations have had similar news at similar times before and found a way. That's got to be our mentality.''
Texas had 22 different players spend time on the disabled list last season, including Darvish missing the final seven weeks with elbow inflammation before needing Tommy John ligament-replacement surgery this spring.
The aching result for the Rangers was the American League's worst record (67-95) and their most losses since 1985, ending an impressive four-year run of 90-win seasons with their only two World Series appearances (2010-11).
Darvish was 10-7 and an All-Star again before getting sidelined last season.
As for the top of the rotation without him, the January trade to get local pitcher Yovani Gallardo proved even more important. Gallardo, who can be a free agent after this season, started the last five season openers for Milwaukee.
Derek Holland, who didn't pitch until September last season after knee surgery, had a strong finish. Shoulder soreness slowed the left-hander this spring, but that likely set him up to start the home opener April 10 against Houston, in the fifth game of the season.
Also among the injured in 2014 were slugger Prince Fielder and Shin-Soo Choo, the big offensive additions before last season.
Fielder had missed only one game the previous five seasons with Detroit and Milwaukee before being limited to only 42 games and three home runs in his Rangers debut because a herniated disk in his neck that required surgery. Choo played 123 games, but his on-base percentage dipped from .423 in 2013 for Cincinnati to .340 before operations late last season for a bone spur in his left elbow and torn cartilage in his left ankle.
''There's no telling what this ballclub can do,'' new manager Jeff Banister said. ''They've yet to have an opportunity to play together. Let's hope they get a really strong shot of playing together for 162-plus (games).''
Here are a few things to know about the Rangers, who open the season April 6 at Oakland:
CLOSING TIME: Neftali Feliz is back in his World Series role for the Rangers as their closer after an ill-fated and injury-plagued attempt to be a starter. The right-hander was 3-1 with a 3.16 ERA in eight games (seven starts) in 2012 before Tommy John surgery. Feliz was 2-1 with 13 saves in 14 chances with a 1.99 ERA in 30 relief appearances after rejoining the Rangers last July, just before Joakim Soria was traded.
BELTRE'S IMPACT: Third baseman Adrian Beltre is going into his 17th major league season, his fifth with the Rangers and signed through next season. ''He's the heart and soul of this club,'' Banister said. ''A shining light in the storm, that's what he was last year. ... Do yourself a favor and watch that last at-bat he put together in 2014.'' Determined not to be the final out of the season, Beltre went from an 0-2 count to getting a single on the third straight slider thrown after that.
LEFT OF CENTER: With pretty much every other defensive position set, Jake Smolinski and Ryan Ruo entered spring as candidates in left field. Both showed promising glimpses in short stints in their major league debuts the second half of last season. Ryan Ludwick, who made his major league debut with Texas in 2002 and played for five other teams the past decade, was a non-roster invitee who could play left. Michael Choice, who got 35 of his 55 outfield starts in left last year, was the early man out when optioned to the minors in mid-March. Choo moves from left to right after Alex Rios departed in free agency.
MISSING WORK: The 26 different DL stints for the Rangers last season amounted to 2,281 days lost. That was 833 more than Arizona, who had the second most, and more than double any other American League team. |

Adrian Beltre is probably very happy playing for the Texas Rangers. A move to the AL East, though, and more games against the Baltimore Orioles sure must be enticing to him.
Beltre looks to lead the Rangers to their sixth win in seven games this season against the reeling Orioles on Sunday.
Texas continued its surge with a 4-3 victory over Baltimore on Saturday for its 12th win in 16 games since Aug. 13, matching Kansas City for most in the AL during that span. The Rangers (67-61) extended their lead for the second wild card to 1 1/2 games over Minnesota.
With its 67th win, Texas equaled its total from last season and matched a season best at six games over .500.
Bobby Wilson delivered the tiebreaking double in the sixth inning.
"Bobby has gotten some really big hits for us," manager Jeff Banister said, "and none bigger than that tonight."
After going 16-28 in their first 44 home games, the Rangers have won 15 of their last 19 in Arlington. They've batted .306 and averaged 5.5 runs during that 19-game span.
Beltre has been a big contributor to that success, batting .397 with six homers and 18 RBIs in his past 17 at home. He had a pair of hits, including a two-run homer Saturday and is batting .425 with 10 home runs and 22 RBIs in his last 22 games against the Orioles.
The freefall continued for Baltimore (63-66), which has lost nine of 10 and scored three runs or fewer in each of those losses to drop to 9-50 when held to less than four. The Orioles are 4 1/2 games behind the Rangers, and another defeat in the finale would leave them four under for the first time since June 7.
"They're frustrated. Frustrated," manager Buck Showalter said. "So, there's one way to take that frustration away."
Dariel Alvarez was a bright spot, picking up his first two major league hits in his second game.
Derek Holland (1-1, 4.73) will try to pitch the Rangers to a third sweep in their last five home series. After beating Seattle in his first appearance in four months, the left-hander wasn't as sharp against Toronto on Tuesday. He allowed four runs - all on three homers - over six innings before leaving without a decision in a 6-5 loss.
Holland is 4-2 with a 3.65 ERA in six starts against the Orioles but hasn't faced them since 2013.
Matt Wieters is 2 for 15 against him but both of those hits are homers. Manny Machado is 4 for 11 in this matchup, while Chris Davis is 0 for 7 with six strikeouts.
Miguel Gonzalez (9-10, 4.78) tries again to record his elusive 10th win for Baltimore. Since winning at Tampa Bay on July 25, the right-hander is 0-4 with a 7.58 ERA in his last six starts and has failed to complete six innings in four of the past five.
He struggled again at Kansas City on Tuesday, yielding three runs, six hits and three walks over 4 1-3 innings in a 3-2 loss.
Gonzalez was roughed up for six runs and eight hits - including a career high-tying three homers - in an 8-6 loss to the Rangers on June 30.
Mitch Moreland hit one of those home runs and is 4 for 10 against him.
