KEY GAME INFORMATION
NY YANKEES: NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter is saying goodbye. Masahiro Tanaka is saying hello.
Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann and Carlos Beltran are new to the Bronx; David Robertson is new to the closer's role. And Alex Rodriguez is nowhere to be seen.
Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte have retired, and Robinson Cano has moved to Seattle.
After missing the playoffs for only the second time in 19 years, the New York Yankees will look a whole lot different. And for the first time since 1998, they don't have baseball's highest payroll.
''I think it is probably the biggest transition I've been through,'' manager Joe Girardi says.
For only the second time in team history and the first time since 1947, every position on opening day other than the mound will be manned by a different Yankees player on opening day than in New York's previous opener.
New York's forgettable 2013 season began with an 8-2 loss to Boston, with Kevin Youkilis at first, Cano at second, Eduardo Nunez at shortstop, Jayson Nix at third, Francisco Cervelli behind the plate, Vernon Wells in left, Brett Gardner in center and Ichiro Suzuki in right.
The only holdover for Tuesday's opener at Houston figures to be Gardner, who has shifted to left. The rest of the starting lineup figures to have McCann behind the plate, Mark Teixeira at first, Brian Roberts at second, Jeter at shortstop, Kelly Johnson at third, Ellsbury in center and Beltran in right.
CC Sabathia will be the constant on the mound. He's coming off the poorest of his 13 major league seasons at 14-13 with a 4.78 ERA.
''Nobody wants to go through that again,'' he says. ''It sticks with me a lot. Just being disappointed in not being able to help this team win. I feel like if I could have been a little better we might have made the playoffs. I blamed myself for a long time in the offseason and now I'm over it and ready to go this year.
TAMPA BAY: ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - The Tampa Bay Rays feel they have everything it takes to win the World Series and aren't afraid to say it.
The budget-minded franchise that's played into October four out of the past six seasons boosted payroll instead of cutting back this winter in hopes of making another strong run for the playoffs.
''The goal is to be the team that plays the last game of the year and win,'' third baseman Evan Longoria said.
''I felt like we were really close to breaking through last year,'' the three-time AL All-Star added. ''And with the team that we have this year, I'm really excited to go out and try to prove to ourselves that we are good enough to do that.''
The Rays won 92 games a year ago, including a Game 163 tie-breaker to claim a wild-card spot, and have compiled the second-best record in baseball over the past six seasons.
That's not enough for manager Joe Maddon and a hungry collection of players who reported to spring training feeling as if there's unfinished business to tend to after losing to eventual World Series champion Boston in the AL division round.
''I love that our guys feel and think that way. I think it's great,'' Maddon said.
''You'll hear that rhetoric in a lot of clubhouses, whether it's baseball, football or basketball, but you've got to back it up. You have to really believe it. Not just say it,'' he said. ''Some groups say it because they're supposed to say it. Some groups say it because they believe it. Our guys believe it.''
That confidence was bolstered by the Rays' ability to keep most of the key components from last year's roster together, including lefty David Price, who anchors one of baseball's deepest pitching rotations.
Price and just about everybody else expected the 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner to be traded, however the Rays wound up giving him a $14 million one-year deal, in addition to re-signing first baseman James Loney and landing free agent closer Grant Balfour in moves that represent a big chunk of a club-record payroll of around $80 million.
Andrew Friedman, the team's vice president of baseball operations, also traded for catcher Ryan Hanigan and infielder Logan Forsythe to give Maddon additional flexibility filling out a batting order around Longoria and 2013 AL rookie of the year Wil Myers.
''Talent can't win every game for you, but it's a good start,'' said Loney, who signed a three-year, $21 million deal - largest since Tampa Bay has given to a free agent since Stuart Sternberg became principal owner.
''If we can stay healthy, if we can do the things we're capable of doing,'' second baseman Ben Zobrist add, ''we certainly have as good or better chance than any other team in the league to win it all.''

*Yankees-Rays Preview* ======================

By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer

New York (10-6) at Tampa Bay (7-9), 7:10 p.m. EDT

After breaking out to end their lengthy skid, the Tampa Bay Rays hope Chris Archer can bounce back from a rough outing and remain tough on the New York Yankees.

The right-hander looks to improve to 4-0 against the Yankees on Saturday night at Tropicana Field.

Tampa Bay (8-9) was outscored 32-7 during a four-game slide that ended Friday when it overcame a 4-0 deficit to pound out 16 hits for an 11-5 win over New York. The Rays have won nine of 12 against the Yankees (10-7), and gained some much-needed offensive confidence after totaling 16 runs in the previous 10 contests.

"I like to believe this is a definite reboot kind of a game," manager Joe Maddon said.

The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for New York, which allowed eight runs during that stretch.

Evan Longoria, James Loney and Wil Myers combined for eight hits and the last two totaled seven RBIs as Tampa Bay scored nine times in their last three at-bats.

Loney, who drove in four of those runs, is 9 for 15 with seven RBIs in his last four games versus New York. Longoria is 5 for 7 in the first two games of the set and batting .468 (22 for 47) during an 11-game hitting streak against the Yankees.

Archer (1-1, 4.50 ERA) posted a 1.23 ERA while winning all three starts versus New York in 2013.

However, he needs to rebound after allowing career highs of seven runs and 12 hits in five innings of a 7-1 loss at Baltimore on Monday. Archer yielded two runs and 10 hits over 13 innings in his first two outings.

"If there is anything to take away from (Monday's game) I think it's how positive and encouraging my teammates were," Archer said. "They fully believe in me, and when I came out they all said, 'In five days, you're going to make somebody pay.'"

New York's Jacoby Ellsbury is 6 for 7 against Archer, and including last season's playoffs with Boston, is batting .452 (14 for 31) in his last seven against the Rays.

Scheduled Yankees starter Ivan Nova (2-1, 5.94) gave up two runs in 7 1-3 innings of a 3-2 win over Boston on Sunday to bounce back after allowing seven in 3 2-3 frames of a 14-5 loss to the Orioles on April 8.

"I thought he had better command of his curveball (Sunday), which was a huge difference," manager Joe Girardi said when comparing Nova's last two outings.

The right-hander went 5-1 with a 2.03 ERA in six starts against the Rays over 2011 and 2012, but was 0-3 while posting a 2.63 ERA and receiving three total runs in four outings last season.

While New York expects to welcome back Mark Teixeira (hamstring) from the disabled list Sunday, it's uncertain if Carlos Beltran will be in the lineup after he missed Friday's game because of left shoulder and right wrist soreness.

"We don't want him to be out for a long period of time," Girardi told the Yankees' official website. "We've just got to get him to where he's feeling a little bit better."

Beltran was 8 for 15 in four games before he went 0 for 5 on Thursday.
