| |  | COLORADO: DENVER (AP) - Troy Tulowitzki benefits by having Carlos Gonzalez in the lineup. Gonzalez certainly benefits from Tulowitzki's presence, too.
But the Colorado Rockies may not benefit as much as you might think having those two sluggers together in the batting order. A healthy Tulo and CarGo by no means guarantees success, even if the Rockies are banking on bounce-back years from them to end a string of four straight losing seasons.
At least, the numbers seem to indicate as much. Since 2010, the Rockies are just 185-198 (.483 winning percentage) when Gonzalez and Tulowitzki are both in the starting lineup, according to STATS.
Still better than the alternative, though. Colorado is 175-252 (.410) when one or both don't start.
The takeaway is simple: This powerful tandem needs some help.
Colorado didn't make any splashy moves over the winter after a 66-96 season that led to sweeping changes in the front office. The biggest moves by new GM Jeff Bridich weren't to bolster a beleaguered pitching staff, but to bring in veteran catcher Nick Hundley and utility infielder Daniel Descalso.
Bridich believes Tulowitzki and Gonzalez can do more to get this team back on track than any sort of blockbuster deal.
If they stay on the field, that is.
''I'm not going to sit here and say we're a 90-win team or whatever it is. I'm just getting myself ready to play,'' Tulowitzki said. ''That's my goal, keep myself healthy.''
That's been anything but easy for the smooth-fielding shortstop. Over his career, he's had stints on the disabled list for a quadriceps tendon tear, lacerated right hand, broken left wrist and a groin injury. Last season, Tulowitzki played only 91 games before undergoing hip surgery.
''I feel great,'' said Tulowitzki, who turned 30 in October. ''But you guys judge and tell me.''
Like Tulowitzki, Gonzalez also feels fit again. The outfielder was limited to 70 games because of surgery to remove a small tumor in his left index finger and then another on his left knee.
''I'm feeling really good in the outfield, so that's a really good sign,'' Gonzalez said.
No doubt, Tulowitzki and Gonzalez fuel each other on offense. With Tulowitzki in the lineup since 2010, Gonzalez hit .307 with 89 homers spanning 402 games. Without him, Gonzalez's average was .291 with 30 homers in 185 games, according to STATS research.
And while Tulowitzki's batting average actually goes up without Gonzalez (.307 to .328), his slugging percentage dips a bit (.559 to .533).
''I think everything will take care of itself - if I play,'' Tulowitzki said.
With the NL West vastly improved, the Rockies aren't exactly in the conversation as contenders. But they do boast Tulowitzki and Gonzalez, along with NL batting champ Justin Morneau and Gold Glove third baseman Nolan Arenado.
''We're a nobody. That's OK with us,'' Arenado said. ''If we stay healthy, we're going to do some damage.''
Things to know as the Rockies try to get back on track:
TRADE RUMORS: Tulowitzki didn't pay too much attention to the trade rumors that popped up in the offseason. Should the Rockies fall out of contention early, those rumors could surface again. "I do know that rumors fly and rumors fly at a high rate these days with all the social media that's going on,'' Tulowitzki said.
YOUNG ROTATION: Lefty Jorge De La Rosa is dealing with a nagging groin injury this spring and righty Jhoulys Chacin was recently let go. That could pave the way for top prospects Eddie Butler and Jon Gray to work their way into the rotation. ''He's a talented kid,'' manager Walt Weiss said of Gray. ''Now it's just a matter of maturing and knowing he belongs.''
NO PLACE LIKE HOME: The Rockies had the worst road record (21-60) last season and hit almost 100 points lower away from home (.228) than at Coors Field (.322). ''Obviously there are some adjustments our hitters have to make, going away from our place,'' Weiss said.
GOLDEN INFIELD: Starter Kyle Kendrick certainly appreciates this infield, with Arenado, Tulowitzki and second baseman DJ LeMahieu all having earned a Gold Glove in their career. ''The defense is great,'' Kendrick said. ''You keep the ball down, you get ground balls, you're going to get outs.'' | | ST LOUIS: ST. LOUIS (AP) - The Cardinals hope Michael Wacha is ready to stand alongside ace Adam Wainwright at the top of their rotation.
Wacha was the NL Championship Series MVP as a rookie but just 5-6 with a 3.20 ERA in 19 starts last year. He was sidelined for most of the season's second half by a stress reaction in his shoulder, and was rusty in October before giving up Travis Ishikawa's series-winning homer in Game 5 of the NLCS.
Now he feels healthy.
''It's very encouraging, the long term of what this kid could be and the short term of how he feels, somebody every fifth day that can bring the kind of stuff he does,'' St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said. ''He feels good about himself and we feel good about what we're seeing.''
The 23-year-old Wacha has long insisted the injury is behind him.
''Ever since I came back last year, I haven't thought about it when I was on the mound,'' Wacha said. ''As far as I know, it was a rare injury. I'm not sure where it came from.''
If it stays away, the Cardinals figure to again have one of the deeper starting staffs despite trading 15-game winner Shelby Miller for outfielder Jason Heyward. Wainwright was a 20-game winner for the second time, and Lance Lynn has averaged 16 wins during three years in the rotation.
John Lackey is a proven late-season talent. Jaime Garcia's resurgent spring following surgery to relieve nerve compression may cause promising Carlos Martinez to be related to the bullpen again.
Lackey expects to be more comfortable in his first full NL season, saying ''It's different for a lot of reasons.''
Things to watch for with the Cardinals, who open April 5 at Chicago:
LEFT-HANDED HEAVY
There are five lefty bats in the lineup, a potential downside. But there also figures to be more power on the bench. Mark Reynolds, who has hit 20 or more homers each of the last seven seasons, was signed as a free agent. He could factor in as a semi-regular, especially at first base, where Matt Adams has struggled against lefties.
HEYWARD TIME
Only 25, Heyward is a potential future core member of the franchise. His is eligible for free agency after the World Series, and the wooing began not long after the trade with Atlanta - which also brought set-up man Jordan Walden.
''He fits in very well with how our guys work, how seriously they take the game,'' Matheny said. ''He's mixed in very well to this point.''
IMPROVED POP
St. Louis hit just 105 homers last season, second-fewest in the majors. They Cardianls are anticipating more out of right field from Heyward, who had a career-low 11 last year while forced into the leadoff spot with Atlanta. Jhonny Peralta followed his drug suspension with a 21 homers, a franchise record among shortstops, and the smooth-swinging Adams is capable of hitting a lot more than 15.
HEALTHY CHOICES
A full return by Garcia would be an unexpected bonus after two injury-filled seasons. Wainwright and Lynn are recovering from health setbacks early in spring training. Center fielder Jon Jay made a delayed exhibition debut following wrist surgery. ''I said the whole goal was to be ready April 5,'' Jay said.
MORE SPEED
Along with increasing the power profile, there will be an emphasis on manufacturing runs. The Cardinals stole 57 bases last year, third-fewest in the major leagues, but are primed for at least a little more thievery with both Wong and Heyward capable of swiping 20-plus.
''I want to see bigger leads. I want to see more aggressive chances with balls in the dirt,'' Matheny said. ''I want to see us take a first-and-second double steal because we have the kind of players to do that.'' |

Colorado (43-57) at St. Louis (65-37), 7:15 p.m. EDT
Matt Carpenter has been the star for the St. Louis Cardinals halfway through this four-game set with the lowly Colorado Rockies.
Lance Lynn could take over that role when the series continues Saturday night because of how he has dominated the Rockies.
Lynn's lowest ERA against an NL foe is versus Colorado, and he's been nearly unbeatable at home as he seeks to win a fourth straight Busch Stadium start.
Carpenter is 6 for 9 with three homers and five RBIs in this series, going deep twice in a 9-8 comeback win Thursday and adding his 13th of the season in Friday's 7-0 rout. The Cardinals have used 14-hit attacks both nights.
St. Louis (66-37) has captured 16 of 19 at home over Colorado with five straight wins as it turns to Lynn (8-5, 2.71 ERA), whose 1.77 home ERA is baseball's fifth-best mark.
The right-hander is 2-0 with a 1.37 ERA in four starts against Colorado with two scoreless efforts. The Rockies with the most plate appearances against him with seven apiece are DJ LeMahieu and Drew Stubbs, who have combined to go 1 for 13 with a walk and six strikeouts.
Lynn is 5-0 with a 1.13 ERA in his last seven home starts, posting a 0.86 ERA in three this month with 22 strikeouts in 21 innings. The one issue plaguing him is that he has baseball's fourth-worst run support average at 2.86.
That could be a problem Saturday since Carpenter could be cooled off because he's 0 for 9 with four strikeouts against Rockies starter Jorge De La Rosa (6-4, 5.03), who is 6-2 with a 3.51 ERA in his last eight starts against the Cardinals. The left-hander is 2-2 with a 3.04 ERA in four at the current Busch Stadium.
Mark Reynolds is 3 for 20 with 10 walks and 10 strikeouts versus De La Rosa and Jhonny Peralta is 5 for 24 with two homers.
De La Rosa has a 3.07 road ERA compared to 6.62 at home. He has yielded six runs in each of his last two starts and escaped without a decision both times, including Monday's 9-8 road loss to the Chicago Cubs.
"I was thinking too much and tried to do too much, and it put more pressure on me," he told MLB's official website. "But I'm better than the way I'm pitching right now."
The Rockies (43-58) are 1-4 on a seven-game trip even with LeMahieu batting .522 in his last six. Nolan Arenado, who leads the majors with 78 RBIs, is 1 for 9 in this series as part of a 5-for-36 slump.
Corey Dickerson is likely headed to the disabled list with two broken ribs suffered in the series opener.
Peralta is 4 for 8 in this series with four RBIs after homering Friday. Stephen Piscotty is batting .400 in the last six games, including a two-run double in a five-run sixth inning that opened a 4-0 lead.
"After striking out twice (earlier in the game), I told myself there are two ways to handle this," Piscotty said. "I could curl up and hide or embrace it as an opportunity to redeem myself."
St. Louis boasts the NL's best bullpen with a 2.32 ERA. That unit received another boost after the club acquired Jonathan Broxton from Milwaukee on Friday.
