| | | SAN FRANCISCO: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - From every slot in a talented, experienced rotation to the back end of the bullpen and in between, to the starting fielders and the role players on the bench, it's hard to find a member of the San Francisco Giants pleased with his 2013 season.
A year after winning the World Series, the Giants finished 10 games under .500, third in the NL West and they missed the playoffs.
''We don't even have to have the conversation, a lot of the guys know it,'' right-hander Matt Cain said. ''We didn't pitch the way that we wanted to.''
As the Giants begin a new year, they will try to keep up with the big-spending Los Angeles Dodgers and regain the grip they had on the NL West when the club won World Series championships in 2010 and `12 - even if everybody expects the Dodgers to be the team to beat.
''You do try to reflect back and try to learn from what happened last year and how you can get better,'' manager Bruce Bochy said. ''You move forward, that's what we had to do. There are some things we'll talk about in the spring, mistakes that we made last year. Also, hopefully guys come in with an attitude, that they weren't happy with what happened the year before and want to get back on track.''
Buster Posey certainly doesn't want to spend too much time thinking about last season.
''That's probably how everybody feels. There's a bad taste in a lot of guys' mouths,'' Posey said. ''We want to come out and focus on winning ballgames.''
| | SAN DIEGO: SAN DIEGO (AP) - It's almost as if last season didn't end for the San Diego Padres.
The Padres go into 2014 trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers and with one of their starting pitchers already having arm trouble.
There had been a general air of optimism surrounding the Padres, who are coming off seasons of 91, 86 and 86 losses. Their rotation has been bolstered, as well as their player payroll.
Then came word late in spring training that newcomer Josh Johnson, penciled in as the No. 3 starter, is expected to be out four to five weeks after straining his right forearm.
That still leaves a projected rotation of Andrew Cashner, Tyson Ross, Ian Kennedy and Eric Stults, with a number of pitchers to choose from to replace Johnson.
''I think we have the talent on the mound, through our 12 guys that are going to make our team, to pitch well,'' manager Bud Black said. ''There's a health component here like all teams. We've got keep our best players on the field.''
The Padres signed Johnson to an $8 million, one-year contact less than two months after he had bone spurs removed from his pitching elbow. He was 2-8 with a 6.20 ERA in 16 appearances last season with Toronto.
When Johnson returns, the Padres hope he and Ian Kennedy can return to their old form.
Kennedy was acquired from division rival Arizona at the trading deadline. He went 4-2 with a 4.24 ERA with San Diego after going 3-8 with a 5.23 ERA in 21 starts with the Diamondbacks. Johnson was an All-Star with the Marlins in 2009 and 2010, and led the NL with a 2.30 ERA in 2010.
The Padres will be tested right away. They open at home Sunday night against the defending NL West champion Dodgers and their $225 million payroll, led by ace Clayton Kershaw, himself a $215 million man. The Dodgers already sit atop the division after sweeping the Diamondbacks in a two-game series in Sydney.

*Giants-Padres Preview* =======================
By JOHN KOSIK STATS Editor
San Francisco (10-5) at San Diego (7-8), 10:10 p.m. EDT
Matt Cain did all he could in his previous outing to earn his first victory. Even a small measure of run support from the San Francisco Giants would have been enough.
The right-hander will try again Friday night by extending his string of solid starts against the NL West-rival Padres when the Giants begin a three-game series at San Diego.
Cain was outstanding in his third start Saturday against Colorado, working seven crisp innings and allowing a single run with eight strikeouts. He gave up four hits but it was one of his three walks that came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Troy Tulowitzki.
That proved sufficient for the Rockies, who got three innings out of Brett Anderson, who left with an injury, but used five relievers on a combined 3-hitter for a 1-0 win.
"It just came down to more of a mental mistake and here we are losing," Cain said. "I've been around long enough to understand what guys are trying to do and get into scoring position. One of the basic things is holding runners."
The three hits were a season low for the Giants (10-6), who were also shut out for the only time so far in 2014.
Cain (0-2, 4.00 ERA) still seemed pleased with his outing.
"I was throwing a lot of strikes and the ball was moving around quite a bit," he said.
He'll now try to get into the win column with another strong start against San Diego (7-9). Cain has gone 7-11 with a 3.15 ERA in 31 career starts against the Padres, but that record doesn't reflect how well he's done against them in recent seasons.
The three-time All-Star has worked at least seven innings in five of his last seven starts against San Diego and has allowed two earned runs or fewer in six of those outings. He is 2-1 with a 1.86 ERA versus the Padres in that span.
The Giants again offered no run support in another strong overall pitching performance in Thursday's 2-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers that prevented a three-game sweep.
Madison Bumgarner gave up two runs in 4 1-3 innings and two relievers shut down Los Angeles from there. San Francisco's bats were lifeless, however, getting six hits and their lone run off Kenley Jansen in the ninth on Ehire Adrianza's two-out single.
It was the Giants' seventh straight one-run game, their most since they played eight in a row in 1910.
Opposing Cain on Friday will be right-hander Tyson Ross (1-2, 3.12), who picked up his first win Sunday.
Ross outworked reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer, giving up one run with seven strikeouts and just one walk in a 5-1 home win over Detroit - giving San Diego its only series victory this season.
After walking nine over two shaky starts, the 6-foot-5 Ross, who has a short stride for such a tall pitcher, said he made an adjustment in his delivery. He is 0-2 with a 4.15 ERA in three career starts against the Giants.
"I sort of like tall guy, long stride," manager Bud Black told MLB's official website. "But Tyson has shown that the way he throws the ball can be effective."
The Padres followed their series win over the Tigers with a four-game split against Colorado after a 3-1 loss in Thursday's finale. Ian Kennedy took a one-hit shutout into the seventh before giving up three runs.
San Diego got a solo homer from Xavier Nady in the loss.
