Manager: Bud Black (first season)
Who's new? 1B Ian Desmond, IF Alexi Amarista, RHP Greg Holland, LHP Mike Dunn
Who's gone? Manager Walt Weiss, LHP Jorge De La Rosa, RHP Eddie Butler, LHP Boone Logan, C Nick Hundley, IF Daniel Descalso, OF Ryan Raburn
Projected lineup: CF Charlie Blackmon (.324, 29 HR, 82 RBI, 17 SB), 2B D.J. LeMahieu (.348, 11, 66, 11), 3B Nolan Arenado (.294, 41, 133), RF Carlos Gonzalez (.298, 25, 100), 1B Mark Reynolds (.282, 14, 53), LF David Dahl (.315, 7, 24) or Gerardo Parra (.253, 7, 39), SS Trevor Story (.272, 27, 72), C Tony Wolters (.259, 3, 30)
Rotation: RH Jon Gray (10-10, 4.61 ERA), RH Tyler Chatwood (12-9, 3.87), LH Tyler Anderson (5-6, 3.54), LH Kyle Freeland (6-3, 3.91 at Triple-A), RH German Marquez (1-1, 5.23)
Key relievers: Greg Holland (did not pitch in 2016), Adam Ottavino (1-3, 2.67, 7/12 SV), Mike Dunn (6-1, 3.40, 4/8 SV with Marlins), Jake McGee (2-3, 4.73, 15/19 SV), Jordan Lyles (4-5, 5.83), Chad Qualls (2-0, 5.23), Chris Rusin (3-5, 3.74), Carlos Estevez (3-7, 5.24, 11/18 SV)
Hot spots: Catcher and closer. Wolters was 23 years old and hadn't played a game above Double-A last year when the Rockies claimed him off waivers from Cleveland. Now he's the most experienced catcher on the Rockies' 40-man roster, having played 71 major league games. A pitch-framing specialist with rare agility behind the plate, Wolters must coax pitchers through Coors Field and its occasional malefactions. While Colorado's rotation is the best it's looked in years, the ninth inning could be an adventure. Seven pitchers recorded a save for the Rockies in 2016. Now, a man who hasn't thrown a competitive pitch since 2015 might be their best option. Holland, 31, saved 125 games for the Royals from 2013-15 before elbow surgery paused his career. Ottavino will close if Holland can't.
Outlook: The Rockies probably won't catch the Dodgers or Giants this season, but a .500 record or better would be a big boost for their rebuilding movement. Black skippered the Padres from 2007-15, then spent last year in the Angels' front office. His first task: keeping morale steady after a spate of injuries and illness struck the clubhouse. The Rockies' biggest offseason acquisition was veteran Desmond, but he'll miss the beginning of the season with a fractured hand. Pitcher Chad Bettis, who led the Rockies with 32 starts last year, is undergoing chemotherapy treatment for testicular cancer. Backup catcher Tom Murphy (hairline fracture in forearm) and outfielder Dahl (ribs) could also start the season on the DL. If they can get past these early hurdles, the Rockies will be competitive at worst and dangerous at best. | | PHILADELPHIA: 2016: 71-91, fourth place
Manager: Pete Mackanin (third season)
Who's new? LF Howie Kendrick, RF Michael Saunders, C Ryan Hanigan, OF Chris Coghlan, RHP Clay Buchholz, RHP Joaquin Benoit
Who's gone? C A.J. Ellis, 1B Ryan Howard, INF Andres Blanco, OF Peter Bourjos, RHP Charlie Morton, RHP David Hernandez
Projected lineup: 2B Cesar Hernandez (.294, 6 HR, 39 RBI, 17 SB), LF Howie Kendrick (.255, 8, 40, 10 with Dodgers), CF Odubel Herrera (.286, 15, 49, 25), 3B Maikel Franco (.255, 25, 88), RF Michael Saunders (.253, 24, 57 with Blue Jays), 1B Tommy Joseph (.257, 21, 47), C Cameron Rupp (.252, 16, 54), SS Freddy Galvis (.241, 3, 20, 17 SB)
Rotation: RH Jeremy Hellickson (11-14, 3.65 ERA), RH Aaron Nola (6-9, 4.78), RH Clay Buchholz (8-10, 4.78 with Red Sox), RH Vince Velasquez (8-6, 4.12), Jerad Eickhoff (11-14, 3.65)
Key relievers: Jeanmar Gomez (3-5, 4.85, 37/43 SV), Joaquin Benoit (2-0, 0.38 with Blue Jays), Hector Neris (4-4, 2.58), Pat Neshek (2-2, 3.06 with Astros), Edubray Ramos (1-3, 3.83)
Hot spots: Shortstop and closer. Philadelphia is waiting for the arrival of J.P. Crawford, the marquee name in the farm system. Crawford struggled in his first exposure to Triple-A last year, batting .250 with seven home runs in 123 games. In the meantime shortstop belongs to Galvis, who had an MLB-worst .274 on-base percentage last season. Crawford will get a chance once he's deemed ready. Gomez had a 19.13 ERA last September, possibly opening the door for Ramos, Neris or newcomer Benoit to seize the closer's job in spring training.
Outlook: On the long road back to respectability, the Phillies appear closer to the end than the beginning. Young starters Nola, Velasquez and Eickhoff showed flashes of brilliance last year. So did center fielder Herrera, who was rewarded with a five-year contract extension. He's the only player on the roster with a guaranteed contract beyond this year. That points to 2017 as a major transition year with prospects and veterans auditioning for jobs in 2018 and beyond, when the Phillies can be active in free agency. |
| | Phillies hope Hellickson helps stop losing streak
PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies have lost 19 of their past 23 games, and aside from the emergence of rookie right fielder Aaron Altherr, they are giving Philadelphia fans very little to look forward to this summer. So, why not call up another outfielder from the minors ahead of the third game of a four-game series against the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday. Through 41 games for Triple-A Lehigh Valley this season, center fielder Roman Quinn is batting .269 with a .353 on-base-plus-slugging percentage and eight stolen bases. The Phillies, meanwhile, have scored just 16 runs in their last eight games and have gotten very little offense from the top of their batting order. They also have an outfield vacancy with Daniel Nava going on the 10-day disabled list on Tuesday due to a left hamstring strain. "It was talked about," Philadelphia manager Pete Mackanin said of promoting Quinn, who turned 24 last week and was the Phillies' second-round pick of the 2011 draft. "They're going to move him when the time is right for him. At the same time, I think we can get by with a short bench right now. "That will give everybody more time down below to get more playing time, which is important. We don't want to make a decision where we're just using a Band-Aid for a short time to move Roman Quinn here. We'll wait and see." Philadelphia (15-28) has lost four in a row and 11 of 13 after falling 8-2 to Colorado on Tuesday. The Phillies have not strung together two wins in a row since winning six straight from April 20-27. On Wednesday, they will turn to right-hander Jeremy Hellickson, who leads the club with a 5-1 record and has a 3.44 ERA. Hellickson, 30, won his last start, allowing two runs (one earned) in six innings during a 7-2 decision over the Pirates. He exited due to pain in his side but is expected to be find for Wednesday. The Phillies are 8-1 in games Hellickson has started. He won his only career appearance against the Rockies, allowing one earned run in seven innings last season. Colorado will give right-hander Tyler Chatwood (3-6, 5.09 ERA) his 10th start of the season. Chatwood allowed two runs on five hits in five innings in his last start, a 2-0 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Thursday. Chatwood allowed a season-high five walks while striking out four. After going 8-1 with a league-best 1.69 ERA on the road last season, Chatwood is 1-3 with a 3.91 ERA in road starts this season. In five career starts against Philadelphia, Chatwood is 2-2 with a 4.15 ERA, but he is 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA in two career starts at Citizens Bank Park. Rockies manager Bud Black said the biggest reason his club is leading the National League with a 30-17 record is consistency in all facets of the game. "Day in and day out, on the mound, in the field, and at the plate, we're doing the things we need to do," Black said. "The focus is high, the discipline is high, and we have a combination of the pitching, hitting and defense doing their thing." |
