Projected lineup: LF Travis Jankowski (.245, 2 HR, 12 RBI, 30 SB), CF Manuel Margot (.243, 0, 3 in 10 games), 1B Wil Myers (.259, 28, 94, 28), 3B Yangervis Solarte (.286, 15, 71), RF Hunter Renfroe (.371, 4, 14 in 11 games), 2B Ryan Schmipf (.217, 20, 51), C Austin Hedges (.125, 0, 1 in eight games), SS Luis Sardinas (.287, 2, 13)
Rotation: RH Jered Weaver (12-12, 5.06 ERA with Angels), RH Jhoulys Chacin (6-8, 4.81 with Angels and Braves), LH Clayton Richard (3-3, 2.52), RH Trevor Cahill (4-4, 2.74 with Cubs), LH Christian Friedrich (5-12, 4.80) or RH Luis Perdomo (9-10, 5.71)
Key relievers: RH Brandon Maurer (0-5, 4.52, 13/19 SV), RH Carter Capps (did not pitch - Tommy John surgery), LH Ryan Buchter (3-0, 2.86), LH Brad Hand (4-4, 2.92), RH Kevin Quackenbush (7-7, 3.92), LH Keith Hessler (1-0, 3.38 with Diamondbacks and Padres), RH Jarred Cosart (0-3, 6.03 with Marlins and Padres)
Hot spots: Bullpen. San Diego's version of a position battle is Green fighting the temptation to bench a young player in the middle of a long slump. Since the Padres are playing for next year anyway, watching bullpen roles shake out might be someone's version of fun. Maurer, the incumbent closer, blew six of 19 save opportunities last year. Hand and Buchter are a pair of workhorse lefties who wouldn't look out of place on a contending team. The wild card is Capps, who is healthy after missing all of 2016 following Tommy John surgery. A year before, he struck out 58 batters in 31 innings with the Marlins.
Outlook: Look up 'rebuilding team' in the dictionary. With only eight active players on the books for more than $1 million ' excluding the retained salaries of Matt Kemp, Melvin Upton Jr. and several other former Padres ' San Diego will field MLB's lowest payroll. Theirs is the youngest roster in baseball too, with perhaps only two players who have turned 30 by Opening Day. Their best prospects are college-age kids in the low minors. So what's to like? Prospect watchers have been awaiting the arrival of Margot and Renfroe for years. The backup catcher, Christian Bethancourt, might pitch. Capps has an unusual delivery. The Padres also ran the bases aggressively under Green, and stolen bases are fun. How's that for a marketing slogan?
MINNESOTA: 2016: 59-103, fifth place.
Manager: Paul Molitor (third season). He's Here: C Jason Castro, RHP Matt Belisle, SS Ehire Adrianza, LHP Craig Breslow. He's Outta Here: 3B Trevor Plouffe, C Kurt Suzuki, LHP Tommy Milone, RHP Pat Light.
Projected lineup: 2B Brian Dozier (.268, 42, 99, 18/20 SBs), RF Max Kepler (.235, 17, 63), CF Byron Buxton (.225, 10 HRs, 38 RBIs, 118 Ks in 298 ABs), 1B Joe Mauer (.261, 11, 49), 3B Miguel Sano (.236, 25, 66, 178 Ks in 437 ABs), DH Kennys Vargas (.230, 10, 20 in 152 ABs), LF Eddie Rosario (.269, 10, 32), C Jason Castro (.210, 11, 32 with Houston), SS Jorge Polanco (.282, 4, 27 in 245 ABs).
Rotation: RH Ervin Santana (7-11, 3.38 ERA, 149 Ks), RH Phil Hughes (1-7, 5.95, 11 HRs, 11 starts), LH Hector Santiago (3-6, 5.58, 13 HRs, 11 starts after trade with Angels), RH Kyle Gibson (6-11, 5.07, 1.561 WHIP), LH Adalberto Mejia (rookie).
Key relievers: RH Brandon Kintzler (0-2, 3.15, 17/20 saves), RH Matt Belisle (0-0, 1.76 in 40 games for Nationals), RH Ryan Pressly (6-7, 3.70, 1 save in 72 games), LH Taylor Rogers (3-1, 3.96, 64 Ks in 57 games), LH Craig Breslow (0-2, 4.50 in 15 games for Marlins). Hot Spot: Starting Rotation. The resuscitation of a team with the worst record in the majors last season must begin with starting pitching that ranked 30th out of 30 in wins (37), ERA (5.39) and strikeouts (655). Hughes, Santiago, Gibson and Berrios will all be counted on to make 2016 the aberration and not the standard. Adding Castro, who has a strong reputation for game calling and pitch framing, probably can't hurt. There's enough depth in the group at least to give the Twins a chance to return to respectability as new baseball chief Derek Falvey continues to try to revamp organizational philosophy and process for the long term. The bullpen appears more vulnerable than the rotation, despite being bolstered by the addition of the veteran Belisle. Three-time All-Star closer Glen Perkins is still working his way back from surgery last year to repair a torn labrum and will likely land on the disabled list to start the season. Kintzler fared well in his place, but doesn't have a track record.
Outlook: The Twins ranked a respectable sixth in the American League in total bases and eighth in OPS despite their abysmal record last year. Buxton's sparkling September, following a second straight frustrating summer, restored his and the club's confidence in the 2012 second overall draft pick. Dozier probably hit his power ceiling in 2016, but if Buxton and Sano can strike out less and get on base more there's the potential in place for a productive offense. Vargas hit his way back into contention for the DH spot with a decent finish to 2016, but the pressure is on him to prove he's worth a spot in the lineup with a strong performance this spring by Park, who struggled badly to adjust to major league pitching in his arrival from South Korea last year.
PREVIEW
Dozier, Twins look to keep pounding Padres

MINNEAPOLIS -- Brian Dozier has put up some big numbers for the Minnesota Twins this year.

Thanks to a solid night at the plate Tuesday against the San Diego Padres, the second baseman now has 30 home runs and 83 RBIs. He leads the Twins in both of those categories, but it is another category he leads Minnesota in that goes a bit unnoticed by some: games played.

He figures to appear in his 137th game of the year Wednesday when the Twins and Padres conclude a two-game series at Target Field. Minnesota put on a record-setting home run performance in a 16-0 win Tuesday. The Twins went deep in each of the first seven innings, the first team ever to accomplish the feat.

Dozier, who hit one of the homers Tuesday, is on pace to play at least 155 games for the fourth consecutive year, a symbol of just how durable -- and productive -- he has been.

"I think some people just kind of take those things for granted," Twins manager Paul Molitor said of Dozier's regular appearance in the lineup. "We talk every spring about our goal should be 150 to 155 games. If he plays a little bit more than that, it's fine, but he's got that mindset. He finds a way to get it done, even when he's not maybe 100 percent -- which most people aren't at this time of the year."

As Minnesota's offense continues to roll, it helps that the regular position players have stayed healthy.

The hitters are giving Minnesota's pitchers a bit more margin for error. Veteran right-hander Ervin Santana will hope that is the case again Wednesday as he starts in the series finale against San Diego.

Santana (15-7, 3.45 ERA) will be facing the Padres for just the sixth time in his career. He has yet to lose to San Diego, going 3-0 with a 1.77 ERA against the Padres.

On Aug. 2 at Petco Park, Santana threw a complete game in a 5-2 win. He gave up four hits and a walk while striking out nine.

San Diego will counter Santana with right-hander Dinelson Lamet, who will be facing Minnesota for the first time in his career. Lamet (7-7, 4.32 ERA) debuted with the Padres earlier this year and is winless in his last four outings despite making three quality starts in that span.

With Lamet on the mound, the Padres will try to forget what happened on Tuesday. San Diego ended up on the wrong side of history. No team had ever homered in the first six innings of a game, let alone the first seven innings.

Lamet hasn't been very susceptible to the long ball lately, giving up just three homers over his past nine games.

In order to rebound from Tuesday's blowout, the Padres will need to give Lamet some run support -- something they haven't done for him recently. In his past four starts, San Diego scored a total of three runs.

"I think over the last three or four months we haven't seen losses like this," said Padres manager Andy Green. "(Tuesday) was one of those anomaly games for us recently. I don't think you make too much out of it."

With the blowout win Tuesday, the Twins increased their lead over the Los Angeles to two games in the chase for the second American League wild card.
