KEY GAME INFORMATION
ARIZONA: PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona's desert overhaul began last summer with the hire of Tony La Russa as chief baseball officer.
More hires followed: Dave Stewart as general manager, Joe Carter and De Jon Watson to front-office positions, Chip Hale as the new manager.
Now that the brain trust is in place, it's time to see what the new-look Diamondbacks can do on the field.
''I don't have a crystal ball. I just know we'll be competitive,'' La Russa said. ''I've said before, I'll be broken-hearted if we don't have a winning record this year.''
Arizona has fallen hard since winning the 2011 NL West crown, putting together a pair of .500 seasons before dropping to 64-98 a year ago, the worst record in baseball and second-worst in franchise history.
Some of it was injuries; the Diamondbacks lost three pitchers to Tommy John surgery and seemed to have every one of their top players get hurt at some point.
But La Russa and the rest of the front office also saw need for changes, which began during the trade deadline and continued during the offseason.
Gone are catcher Miguel Montero, third baseman Martin Prado, shortstop Didi Gregorius, along with pitchers Wade Miley and Brandon McCarthy.
Even with the losses, Arizona's lineup should be potent.
A.J. Pollock, Mark Trumbo and Paul Goldschmidt are all healthy after missing games last season and David Peralta returns in right field after a solid rookie season. Arizona also picked up Cuban slugger Yasmany Tomas, who has potentially game-changing power.
But, as has been the case in the desert, pitching will be the big question
Arizona traded Miley to Boston and its opening day starter will be Josh Collmenter, an over-the-top-throwing right-hander who has bounced between the bullpen and the rotation during his four big-league seasons.
Patrick Corbin and Bronson Arroyo were part of the rotation last season, but both underwent Tommy John surgery and aren't expected to return until at least midseason.
The Diamondbacks picked up right-hander Rubby De La Rosa in the Miley trade and right-hander Jeremy Hellickson in another deal with Tampa Bay. Arizona also signed 21-year-old Cuban right-hander Yoan Lopez, who is competing for a spot in the rotation, and has right-handers Chase Anderson and Trevor Cahill back from last season.
For all the potential the Diamondbacks have with their bats, it won't matter much if the pitchers don't come through.
A few more things to look for from the 2015 Arizona Diamondbacks:
GOLDY SHINES: Goldschmidt was having another stellar season in 2014 when he was derailed by a broken hand at the start of August. Before his injury, the All-Star first baseman had become one of the best power hitters in the game and was runner-up in the NL MVP race in 2013, when he hit .302 with 26 homers and 125 RBIs. He felt good throughout spring training and expected to be back giving the Diamondbacks some consistent pop in the lineup.
REPLACING MONTERO: Arizona took a gamble during the offseason by trading Montero to the Chicago Cubs. A two-time All-Star, Montero was a steadying influence in the clubhouse and behind the plate, not to mention a power bat in the lineup. Now that he's gone, the Diamondbacks will turn to 31-year-old Tuffy Gosewisch, who has 179 career at-bats and didn't break into the majors until 2013 after eight years in the minors.
ADDING TOMAS: The Diamondbacks made a bit of an international splash by signing Tomas to a six-year, $68 million contract. The dilemma now is to figure out where to play him and how quickly he can adjust to playing in the big leagues. Arizona would like to play the 24-year-old at third base, but could move him to the outfield if he can't make the transition to a position he's never played. Tomas has plenty of raw ability and is young, so the Diamondbacks have high hopes for him - wherever he ends up playing.
HUDSON'S RETURN: Daniel Hudson was a consistent performer on Arizona's staff before having Tommy John surgery each of the past two seasons. He returned last September, pitching in the bullpen. The right-hander is expected to start the season in the bullpen, but could find a place back in the rotation if he remains healthy.
MILWAUKEE: MILWAUKEE (AP) - Success for the Brewers this season may hinge on Milwaukee's consistency in the batter's box.
September swoons can prove costly - as can prolonged slumps any other time of year, for that matter.
A lineup filled with accomplished hitters like Ryan Braun, Jonathan Lucroy and Carlos Gomez has the potential to score runs. To break into the playoffs from the competitive NL Central, the Brewers must eliminate team-wide slumps.
''Last year we kind of grinded it to a point where instead of just playing day to day and for that game and to win, we looked like we were forcing things,'' manager Ron Roenicke said. ''We were trying to hold on to what we had, and that's not the way we go about it.''
The Brewers spent 150 days in first place before a stunning, late-season collapse left them out of the playoffs for a third straight year.
''We've got a good club, and when we're playing the type of baseball I think we can play every night ... if we just worry about that game today, at the end of the season, good things will happen,'' the skipper added from the team's spring training complex in Phoenix.
The lineup is bashing again this spring.
After a slow start, Braun has been hitting much better following an unusual offseason medical procedure. Extreme cold was applied to his right hand in hopes of fixing a lingering nerve problem near the thumb.
Lucroy also looks like he is over a hamstring injury that limited him for the first few weeks of spring training. The upbeat, energetic Gomez had three homers three weeks into spring ball.
''Every day you learn something new ... you learn from that,'' Gomez said about the 2014 season. ''The first step we have to do is make the playoffs. We take it game by game.''
The regular season begins on April 6 against Colorado at Miller Park. Some things to watch with the Brewers:
PITCHING: The Brewers don't have a true ace, but they do have solid veterans atop the rotation in Kyle Lohse and Matt Garza. Wily Peralta won 17 games last year in his second full season in the majors, and Mike Fiers impressed down the stretch. But Milwaukee traded Yovani Gallardo and Marco Estrada, so there is no experienced starting depth. Young right-hander Jimmy Nelson must prove he can be a consistent fifth starter. A long-term injury to any of the starting five could leave the Brewers scrambling.
In the bullpen, veteran Francisco Rodriguez figures to return to the closer's role after re-signing with the club more than two weeks into spring training. He bounced back with 44 saves in 49 chances last season.
AGGRESSIVENESS: Roenicke likes his team to take chances on the base paths, and he's sticking with that philosophy. That puts the Brewers in attack mode, and when working at its best, the strategy forces the defense to rush and possibly make mistakes. But rally-killing outs on the bases can make fans at Miller Park groan. Perhaps of more concern is the approach at the plate, where the Brewers led the majors by swinging at 33 percent of first pitches, according to STATS. Darnell Coles is the new hitting coach. The team wants to stay aggressive while having more plate discipline.
KEYSTONE COMBO: While Braun, Lucroy and Gomez draw much of the attention in the lineup, the Brewers' keystone combination of second baseman Scooter Gennett and shortstop Jean Segura will be just as vital to the team's success. Gennett, a left-hander, will play every day and must prove he can hit lefties consistently. The speedy Segura is a top defender, though he is looking to bounce back from a slump that dropped his average nearly 50 points to .246.
RAMMY OUT: It is probably one more and done for third baseman Aramis Ramirez, who turns 36 in June. He has said he likely will retire after this season to spend more time with his family. Ramirez's production has waned over the last two seasons, though he remains one of the best in the league in fielding bunts and slow rollers to third.

*Diamondbacks-Brewers Preview* ==============================

By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer

Arizona (21-25) at Milwaukee (16-32), 4:10 p.m. EDT

The Arizona Diamondbacks traveled to Milwaukee riding a few seasons of success at Miller Park and in need of a win to forget about a sweep at the hands of a more formidable NL Central foe.

They didn't disappoint in the opener, and they'll try to secure the series Saturday against the big league-worst Brewers, who are in danger of entering June with their worst record ever.

Arizona (22-25) followed three losses in St. Louis with Friday's 7-5 victory, giving it victories in six of seven in Milwaukee with 5.71 runs per game and a .302 average dating to the start of 2013.

Nick Ahmed, Ender Inciarte, David Peralta and A.J. Pollock all went deep, giving the Diamondbacks 11 home runs over their first seven-game homer streak since August 2013. They last went longer than that with a nine-gamer in May of that season. Pollock is batting .459 in his last 10 games.

Milwaukee's allowed nine home runs in the last four games, and its 48 surrendered at home easily lead the majors.

"We have to fix it," manager Craig Counsell told MLB's official website. "There's no question about it. It's too many. We know this ballpark is going to give up home runs. We still have to do a better job of preventing them."

Paul Goldschmidt, who has two of the recent homers, was 3 for 5 with three doubles and is hitting .444 over eight games. His .476 average in 10 career games at Miller Park is his highest at any big league park. He has four home runs and nine doubles in those games to account for a 1.476 OPS, which is also a personal best.

"It's a tough place to pitch I'll tell you, this ballpark," Arizona manager Chip Hale said.

The Brewers (16-33) have dropped six straight overall and at home, and if they can't win Saturday, they'll be assured of entering June with at least tied for their worst winning percentage ever. The 2002 (18-36) and 1970 (15-30) clubs had .333 winning percentages. They need to win their remaining two games in order to avoid joining those teams or establishing a new low.

Jeremy Hellickson will try to take advantage and win consecutive starts for the first time since July 2013.

Hellickson (2-3, 5.33 ERA) hasn't lost in five starts this month, but he probably deserves a few considering his 5.40 May ERA. His only decision during that time came in Sunday's 4-3 home win over the Chicago Cubs as the right-hander allowed three runs and four hits in 6 2-3 innings. The lack of decisions comes as no surprise, given his run-support average is also 5.40 this month.

His last two starts have been his most promising stretch of the season with five runs surrendered in 12 2-3 innings, but he's continuing to give up home runs with seven of his eight allowed for the season coming this month.

Hellickson's four road starts have yielded a 1-1 record and 4.01 ERA while he's 1-2 with a 6.58 in five at home.

In his first start against the Brewers since 2011, he'll be facing Kyle Lohse, who after reining his season in some over his first four starts of May with a 2-0 record and 3.38 ERA, regressed in Monday's 8-4 home loss to San Francisco. The right-handed Lohse (3-5, 5.80) gave up five runs and six hits in 5 1-3 innings, falling to 2-3 with a 7.31 ERA in six home starts.

After two starts without allowing a home run, he gave one up against the Giants and has conceded 11 for the season.

Since joining the Brewers in 2013, he's 1-1 with a 4.42 ERA against the Diamondbacks while holding them to a .194 average.
