KEY GAME INFORMATION
ARIZONA: PHOENIX (AP) - The season had not even started when the Arizona Diamondbacks took a loss.
A day before boarding the plane for their season opener in Australia, the Diamondbacks learned scheduled opening-day starter Patrick Corbin had a partially torn ligament in his pitching elbow and might need season-ending surgery.
Arizona went 21-8 in the young left-hander's starts last season, more than a quarter of the victories for a team that went 81-81 for the second year in a row. The Los Angeles Dodgers celebrated their NL West title by splashing around in Arizona's Chase Field swimming pool.
Arizona retooled during the offseason by adding power (Mark Trumbo), a veteran starter (Bronson Arroyo) and a young closer (Addison Reed). Even with the loss of Corbin, the Diamondbacks feel they have the components to contend for at least a wild-card berth.
''They really want it,'' catcher Miguel Montero said. ''They're hungry for something, and that's a good feeling. I think last year we were a little bit more laid back. This year the guys are hungry, and that's a good thing.''
Trumbo noticed a positive attitude right from the start of spring training.
''That's the personality of the guys here and that plays really well for the course of a long season,'' he said. ''You've got to have guys that play the game right way, but play it with a little bit of a chip on their shoulder and bring it every day.''
LA DODGERS: LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Dodgers have spent big bucks on their roster, ramping up World Series expectations right along with the payroll. Now they want to produce results.
They'll get the chance starting Saturday in Australia, where they open the season against NL West rival Arizona.
With a payroll in the range of $225 million-plus, the Dodgers have laid the groundwork to get to their first World Series title since 1988, when they won the title. They came up short last year, losing to St. Louis in six games in the NL championship series.
''The expectations going in this time are realistic. We're a talented club and we're capable,'' said manager Don Mattingly, who signed a three-year extension in January.
The Dodgers want to avoid the poor start they had last season, when key players were injured and the team had to rally to get back into the division race. They eventually won the title by 11 games over the Diamondbacks.
''We need to be more consistent,'' Mattingly said. ''I see it as winning every series and you'll be in pretty good shape. The next thing you know, you're 20 games over .500.''
First baseman Adrian Gonzalez is looking to follow up his strong season last year, while shortstop Hanley Ramirez, who was injured in the NL championship series, will be playing to set himself up for impending free agency.

*Diamondbacks-Dodgers Preview* ==============================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Arizona (4-14) at Los Angeles (9-6), 10:10 p.m. EDT

After barely avoiding their first series sweep, the Los Angeles Dodgers are hoping Adrian Gonzalez and an unbeaten Zack Greinke can duplicate last weekend's performances against the slumping Arizona Diamondbacks.

The hot-hitting Gonzalez had a particularly spectacular showing in the Dodgers' sweep and will try to add to a 12-game hit streak while helping send Arizona to a seventh consecutive defeat Friday night.

Los Angeles (10-6) scored just five runs in its three games in San Francisco this week after outscoring the Diamondbacks 22-11 in a three-game sweep in Arizona. After a pair of one-run losses, the Dodgers kept the Giants at bay in a 2-1 victory Thursday.

Gonzalez extended his hit streak by driving in the second run on a fifth-inning single. The first baseman, who also doubled Thursday, is batting .340 with five homers, five doubles and 14 RBIs during his streak.

Gonzalez homered in each of the three wins against Arizona - part of a four-game streak - and went 7 for 13 with 10 RBIs. He hit a two-run shot off Wade Miley (2-2, 5.04 ERA) in the third inning of an 8-5 victory Saturday.

Miley dropped to 0-2 with a 7.20 ERA in two starts against the Dodgers this season by allowing season highs of five runs, eight hits and three walks in a season-low five innings.

Greinke (3-0, 2.76) was the opposing pitcher in Saturday's game and yielded just one run - on A.J. Pollock's solo homer - while striking out eight for the second straight game. It was his first start against Arizona this season.

Greinke is 3-0 with a 1.78 ERA in his last four starts versus the Diamondbacks, who are 0-5 against the Dodgers. Arizona (4-14) suffered the first two of those losses to its NL West rivals in March in Australia and are off to the worst start in franchise history.

"Obviously, these last couple of weeks, it hasn't gone our way as a whole," first baseman Paul Goldschmidt said. "We've made mistakes defensively, base running, pitching, hitting, all the way around. We haven't really put it together except for a few games and when you do that you're going to lose."

Their latest three defeats to Los Angeles started their current six-game skid. Arizona added to that by getting outscored 21-5 by the visiting New York Mets this week.

The Mets trailed in only the opening inning of the series, and the Diamondbacks saw one of the worst ERAs in the majors rise to 6.02 by the end of the three-game set.

That might help Hanley Ramirez in his expected return from a bruised left hand Friday. He was given the day off after getting hit by a Ryan Vogelsong pitch Wednesday night.

"I'm not going to try to play tomorrow. I'm going to be there," Ramirez told the team's website.

Yasiel Puig was back in the lineup Thursday amid reports that the smugglers who helped him get out of Cuba are threatening his life.

"I'm only concentrating on the season and being the best teammate and helping my teammates," Puig said, speaking in Spanish during an interview with The Associated Press.

Goldschmidt is hitting .397 with six homers in his last 16 games at Dodger Stadium. He's batting .380 with nine homers in his last 34 overall matchups and is 4 for 12 with no home runs against Greinke the past two seasons.

Miley is 2 for 2 in his career against Greinke.
