| |  | CHI WHITE SOX: CHICAGO (AP) - A decade removed from their most recent championship, the Chicago White Sox once again are eyeing a big season.
Their sights are set on an AL Central title after consecutive losing records, maybe even more. The White Sox added to their offense, boosted their rotation, overhauled their bullpen and sent expectations soaring.
''Obviously postseason first, and World Series,'' new closer David Robertson said. ''I mean that's what I look forward to every year. That's where I want to be.''
The addition of Robertson to the bullpen is among the reasons the White Sox believe they are armed and ready after going 73-89. But it's not the only one.
They added All-Star Jeff Samardzija to a rotation that already included ace Chris Sale. They added free agent Adam LaRoche to their lineup, giving AL Rookie of the Year Jose Abreu more protection, and brought in Melky Cabrera to solidify the No. 2 spot in the order behind Adam Eaton.
Is that enough to compete with Cleveland, Kansas City and Detroit in the division and make a run in the playoffs? The White Sox believe it is. Their fans are pumped, too.
With that in mind, here are some things to look for this season:
LINED UP: It would be hard for Abreu to match, let alone exceed, what he did last season. He batted .317 with 36 homers and 107 RBIs, one year after defecting from Cuba. While the White Sox tied for fourth in the AL in homers, they were just eighth in runs, ninth in batting average and 12th in on-base percentage.
LaRoche, who signed a $25 million, two-year contract, should give them power from the left side. He hit 26 homers and drove in 92 runs for Washington last season. Cabrera, a .301 hitter with Toronto, helps the top of the order.
''I think we're jelling together as a team. Hopefully that translates to wins in April,'' Eaton said.
SALE-ING ALONG: With Sale, Samardzija and Jose Quintana, the White Sox appear strong at the top of the rotation.
Sale made the AL All-Star team for the third time last season while going 12-4 with a 2.17 ERA with 208 strikeouts and 39 walks. Samardzija, acquired from Oakland, moves into the No. 2 spot. With Sale recovering from a broken foot, Samardzija - who grew up a White Sox fan - could wind up starting the opener at Kansas City after pitching the previous two for the Cubs.
CLOSING TIME: Chicago tied for seventh in the majors with 21 blown saves and had the fourth-lowest save percentage (63.2) last season. Robertson, who took over as closer after Mariano Rivera retired, saved 39 games for the New York Yankees last season. Chicago also brought in Zach Duke.
RODON WATCH: Whether he starts the season in the rotation or gets sent down to the minors, expect to see top prospect Carlos Rodon in a White Sox uniform at some point this season. The No. 3 pick in last year's amateur draft, he is on a fast track to the majors after three standout seasons at North Carolina State. Rodon, who made nine minor league appearances in 2014, could start the year in the rotation. If Rodon starts in the minors, veteran Brad Penny could make some early starts. | | HOUSTON: HOUSTON (AP) - The Houston Astros moved out of the major league basement last season.
Now the question is whether Jose Altuve and his teammates are ready to contend this year or if they still need a couple of seasons to complete their rebuild and get back to the postseason.
Owner Jim Crane is confident the time is now.
''This is our year,'' he said, adding that their goal is to make the playoffs.
The Astros made a 19-game improvement in 2014 to win 70 games and snap a streak of three straight 100-loss seasons. They beefed up a bullpen that struggled last year and added more pop to a lineup that was fourth in the majors with 163 homers in 2014 in an attempt to take another step in 2015.
''These guys are all professional baseball players and they all want to win,'' general manager Jeff Luhnow said. ''We're not going to set any limitations on them. It's up to them at this point. We've done our work for the offseason.''
The Astros blew 25 saves last season, a statistic that troubled Crane more than any other number associated with his team. His first order of business this offseason was to bring in players to get that number down this year.
To that end, Houston added relievers Luke Gregerson and Pat Neshek. Gregerson appeared in 72 games for the Athletics last season and posted a 2.12 ERA and Neshek saw action in 71 games for St. Louis in 2014 with a 1.87 ERA.
A lineup that already had power aplenty with Chris Carter, whose 37 homers tied for second in the majors last season, and George Springer, who hit 20 in just 78 games, now has more sluggers with the addition of Evan Gattis and Colby Rasmus. Gattis has hit 43 homers combined in his first two major league seasons and Rasmus has hit at least 22 home runs in two of the last three years.
That power is what excites first-year manager A.J. Hinch most about his team.
''We have a chance to be a dangerous lineup,'' Hinch said with a smile.
Some things to know about the 2015 Astros:
EXPECTATIONS FOR ALTUVE: Altuve became the first Astros player to win a batting title by hitting .341 last season. He set a team record with 225 hits, was third in the majors with 47 doubles, had 59 RBIs and tied for second in the league with 56 stolen bases.
So what does Luhnow expect the 24-year-old second baseman to do for an encore?
''He's going to be a .300 career hitter, which are few and far between,'' Luhnow said. ''So there's going to be years like with most of these great hitters where they hit .340 and years that they hit .305. In my mind Altuve is an elite major league hitter and we're going to see it year in and year out.''
SPRINGER'S SECOND YEAR: Springer, the 11th overall pick in the 2011 draft, hit .231 with 20 homers and 51 RBIs in 78 games as a rookie. He injured his left quadriceps on July 20 and he didn't play again. The Astros are eager to see what the right fielder can do in a full season.
''He's got a ton of potential,'' Hinch said. ''He's a dynamic player. He can do a lot of different things in a lot of different ways. Everybody sort of sits up in their seats when he comes up to bat. I think there's a chance for him to have impact in all (areas) of the game, which is hard to come by.''
CAN ROTATION BE CONSISTENT?: Dallas Keuchel (12-9, 2.93 ERA) and Collin McHugh (11-9, 2.73) had breakout seasons in 2014, but can they perform at that level in a second year to lead the rotation? Keuchel posted ERAs of over 5.00 in both of his first two seasons before being chosen this year's opening day starter with his work last year, and McHugh had ERAs of 7.59 and 10.04 in his first two years before his success in 2014.
ANOTHER NEW SKIPPER: Counting interim managers, Hinch is the seventh manager the Astros have had since 2009. He was hired just after last season following the firing of Bo Porter, who was let go near the end of his second season.
This is the second time the 40-year-old Hinch has led a team after he managed Arizona from May 2009 until July 2010, when he was fired after 31-48 start. He was the vice president of professional scouting for San Diego from 2010 until August. |

While leading hitter Avisail Garcia could return to the lineup for the Chicago White Sox, a nagging injury to reigning AL Rookie of the Year Jose Abreu has left his immediate status uncertain.
Regardless of who is in the lineup Saturday, the visiting White Sox likely face a difficult task against Houston Astros ace Dallas Keuchel.
Leading the club with eight home runs and 29 RBIs, Abreu is day to day after leaving Friday's 6-3, 11-inning victory with an irritation to his right index finger that has given him problems of late.
Garcia, meanwhile, appears set to play after missing five games with knee inflammation. Hitting .327, Garcia took batting practice Friday and was available to pinch hit.
"It was very encouraging watching him run around ... looks like it would be (Saturday) to have him start again," manager Robin Ventura said of Garcia, who is batting .406 with three homers and 11 RBIs in 19 road games.
Geovany Soto, who entered Friday's game when catcher Tyler Flowers moved to first base in place of Abreu, delivered a two-run, go-ahead double in the 11th to help Chicago (22-25) improve to 3-3 on an 11-game trip.
"We had to start moving guys all over the place trying to figure out who you've got, who's available," Ventura said. "It was a nice win."
Though Soto is 2 for 12 versus Keuchel (6-1, 1.98 ERA), Garcia homered for his one hit in two at-bats against the left-hander.
After losing at Yankee Stadium on Aug. 21, Keuchel went 8-0 with a 1.79 ERA in 14 starts before he yielded a pair of two-run homers and four other hits over eight innings of Monday's 4-3 loss at Baltimore.
"You're going up against professional hitters and if you don't locate, even if you get the ball up, quarter inch, inch above what you want, guys can get under that pitch," he told MLB's official website. "I think I still pitched well overall."
Manager A.J. Hinch isn't concerned.
"Every starter that goes out wants to try to win. He's no exception," Hinch said. "That's the first blemish on a record that's been really awesome this year."
With Keuchel 5-0 and boasting a 1.61 ERA in his last eight home starts, Hinch should have every reason to believe he'll bounce back. Keuchel still leads the AL in opponent batting average (.190) and ranks among the major league leaders in ERA and innings (72 2-3).
Keuchel, 1-1 with a 3.97 ERA versus Chicago, will try to help Houston (30-19) avoid just its second three-game skid of the season as it faces Jose Quintana (2-5, 4.67).
The left-hander allowed seven runs in six-plus innings of Sunday's 8-1 defeat to Minnesota, but he's posted a 1.29 ERA while splitting his last two on the road. Quintana has received one run or no runs of support in five of his last seven outings.
He's 1-0 with a 3.63 ERA in four starts against the Astros, who had 10 hits but went 2 for 13 with runners in scoring position Friday.
With two RBIs, Chris Carter has six in the last four games and is batting .364 in his last six contests. He's 1 for 7 with a double and four strikeouts versus Quintana.
