KEY GAME INFORMATION
CLEVELAND: CLEVELAND (AP) - Jason Kipnis didn't want it to end. He had plenty of company.
After the final out ended the club's magical, turnaround season so jarringly last October, Kipnis, who made his first All-Star team in 2013 and a few of his teammates lingered in the dugout and watched as Tampa Bay's players celebrated their 4-0 win in the AL wild-card playoff game.
One and done. Hardly the finish Cleveland wanted.
And once again, the city would remain without a major sports championship, a drought approaching its 50-year anniversary.
But despite their brief postseason appearance in manager Terry Francona's first year, the Indians intend to play in October again - and again.
''We don't want it to be a fluke,'' Kipnis said. ''We don't want to be a one-trick pony. We want to be at the top and we want to stay there.''
Hoping to build off their unexpected 92-win campaign, the Indians enter 2014 confident they can not only contend this season, but go even further.
During spring training in Arizona, first baseman Nick Swisher, who also serves as the club's high-energy hype man, handed out ''Unfinished Business'' T-shirts to his teammates.
The Indians aren't satisfied.
''Last season, hopefully, was a steppingstone that we needed to get us going in the right direction,'' Swisher said. ''Last year was that amazing year to get us in the right mind frame to say, `Hey, we can do this. We are a team. And people need to start recognizing it.'''
Cleveland had to win its final 10 games just to make the playoffs. The late-season kick wouldn't have been necessary if the Indians had played more consistently, and more evenness has been a focus for Francona, who feels his club has the makings to do something special again.
''I love our team,'' said the AL's manager of the year. ''I love coming to the ballpark and watching them play. They are easy to like because they try hard. When you can show up with a group of guys and you respect the way they go about things it makes the challenging times more fulfilling. We know we can do it now. We've got to try and go do it better.''
HOUSTON: HOUSTON (AP) - Coming off three straight 100-loss seasons, the Houston Astros are confident they'll be better this year.
How much? They aren't putting a number on that. But after setting a franchise record with a whopping 111 defeats, they have a simple target.
''It's our goal to be the most improved team in major league baseball (and) I believe ... we have the group together and we can actually accomplish that,'' second-year manager Bo Porter said.
There are several reasons why the Astros are certain they can improve. They brought in several established players this offseason to pair with the many young players who got their first significant playing time last season. They also could get some reinforcements soon from top prospects who are inching closer to being major league ready.
General manager Jeff Luhnow's rebuilding plan has already boosted Houston's minor league system from the worst in baseball to one of the best. He expects that work to start paying dividends this season in the majors.
''We have a young team. We're still going to make some mistakes,'' he said. ''Our young players have improved but still need some development. We brought in some veterans to help stabilize the team this year. We're going to see a big improvement as a result of those two dynamics.''

*Indians-Astros Preview* ========================

By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer

Cleveland (77-73) at Houston (67-84), 8:10 p.m. EDT

A pair of strong pitching performances have helped the Cleveland Indians bounce back from a rough start to their final road trip of the regular season.

Danny Salazar now looks to avoid a third straight rough outing while helping the Indians end Scott Feldman's run of home success for the Houston Astros on Thursday night.

Cleveland (78-73) snapped a four-game skid Tuesday when Corey Kluber pitched seven strong innings during a 4-2 victory over Houston. One night later, Carlos Carrasco allowed two infield hits to Jose Altuve and struck out a career-high 12 in a 2-0 victory.

"It felt great," Carrasco said.

Five games back of the AL's second wild-card spot, the Indians continue to fight and will hand the ball to Salazar (6-7, 4.22).

The right-hander allowed an earned run, three hits and struck out seven in six innings while not factoring in the decision of a 3-2 win over Houston on Aug. 23. He followed that effort with 14 scoreless innings over his next two outings, highlighted by striking out nine during an eight-hitter in a 7-0 victory over Detroit on Sept. 3.

Since then, however, Salazar has allowed nine runs in 10 1-3 innings while going 0-1 in two starts. He gave up three of those runs over 5 2-3 while not factoring in the decision of a 5-4 defeat to the Tigers on Saturday.

Teammate Yan Gomes went 2 for 4 Wednesday and has two RBIs for a second straight game. He is batting .397 with 11 RBIs in his last 17 road contests.

Hoping to take this four-game series and improve to 3-4 on the 10-game trip, the Indians could face a stiff test versus Feldman (8-11, 3.95 ERA).

Since giving up seven runs in 5 1-3 innings of an 8-3 home loss to Boston on July 11, Feldman has yielded eight over 38 1-3 innings to go 3-1 in his next five outings at Minute Maid Park. In his most recent outing there Aug. 30, the right-hander tossed a three-hitter during a 2-0 win over Texas.

Feldman has since posted a 2.51 ERA while going 0-1 in two starts. He allowed two solo homers to Mike Trout over six innings in Saturday's 5-2 loss to the Los Angeles Angels.

"I probably didn't feel as good as I did the past few games, but you're not always going to feel great out there," Feldman, who is 2-2 with a 2.19 ERA in his last five overall, told MLB's official website.

He's 2-2 with a 3.60 ERA as a starter against the Indians, but has not faced them since 2012 while with the Rangers.

Altuve recorded one of his major league-high 213 hits in three at-bats versus Salazar this season. That total ties him with Boston's Dustin Pedroia from 2008 for the most hits by a second baseman since 1974.

Altuve is 15 for 30 in the last seven games overall and 11 for 19 in his last five against the Indians at Minute Maid Park.
