Journeyman Jackson on bump as Tigers face Mariners

Edwin Jackson is the major leagues' ultimate journeyman, and he's happy with his latest landing stop.

Jackson has pitched for 13 teams and recently joined the Detroit Tigers for the second time in his career. He'll make his second start for them this season when he faces the Seattle Mariners at Detroit's Comerica Park on Wednesday.

Jackson signed a minor league contract with the Tigers last month after Toronto cut him loose. Detroit recalled him last week and he held the Kansas City Royals to one run and four hits in 6 1/3 innings, gaining his first victory for the organization since Sept. 22, 2009.

"He's a veteran guy that's worked really hard, and he appreciates every moment that he's getting," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "And this was a big moment, coming back here. He was excited about it, so he went out and did his thing, threw the ball great."

Jackson posted a 13-9 record in 2009 when Detroit lost a division tiebreaking game to Gardenhire's Minnesota Twins.

"I have family here, a lot of cousins, aunts," Jackson said to MLB.com. "It's like home. But that team we had, we had the city excited. I had a chance to catch the city when it was alive."

Jackson (2-5, 9.35 ERA) was roughed up in eight appearances with the Blue Jays, giving up six runs on five occasions. He looked energized on Friday pitching for the league's worst team.

"A lot of people look at it as a tough situation," Jackson said. "I look at it as taking a group like this that has had a tough year and teaching them how to have fun. You can always take something from a season. Just teach them to have fun and leave it on the field."

Jackson, who turns 36 next month, has always enjoyed facing the Mariners. In six career starts, he's 5-0 against them with a 1.85 ERA.

He'll be opposed by left-hander Marco Gonzales (12-9, 4.25 ERA), who has already collected a victory over the Tigers this season. He held them to one run and six hits in seven innings in Seattle on July 27.

Gonzales limited Tampa Bay to two runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings while striking out nine on Friday. The strikeout total tied his career best. He departed after getting hit in the left calf by a comebacker.

"It got me pretty good, but in the moment I had some adrenaline going and didn't feel it too much," Gonzales told MLB.com afterward. "I tried to fight to stay in with where we were at in the game. I didn't see a reason to come out, but with my pitch count getting high, Skip (manager Scott Servais) just said he was making an executive decision and it was best to go to the pen."

Over his last 11 outings, Gonzales is 7-3 with a 3.54 ERA. He's 1-1 with a 2.41 ERA in three career starts against Detroit.

Seattle took the series opener on Tuesday 11-6 behind Kyle Seager's three-homer game. The Mariners are 5-0 against the Tigers this season.
