KEY GAME INFORMATION
CHI WHITE SOX: CHICAGO (AP) - A decade removed from their most recent championship, the Chicago White Sox once again are eyeing a big season.
Their sights are set on an AL Central title after consecutive losing records, maybe even more. The White Sox added to their offense, boosted their rotation, overhauled their bullpen and sent expectations soaring.
''Obviously postseason first, and World Series,'' new closer David Robertson said. ''I mean that's what I look forward to every year. That's where I want to be.''
The addition of Robertson to the bullpen is among the reasons the White Sox believe they are armed and ready after going 73-89. But it's not the only one.
They added All-Star Jeff Samardzija to a rotation that already included ace Chris Sale. They added free agent Adam LaRoche to their lineup, giving AL Rookie of the Year Jose Abreu more protection, and brought in Melky Cabrera to solidify the No. 2 spot in the order behind Adam Eaton.
Is that enough to compete with Cleveland, Kansas City and Detroit in the division and make a run in the playoffs? The White Sox believe it is. Their fans are pumped, too.
With that in mind, here are some things to look for this season:
LINED UP: It would be hard for Abreu to match, let alone exceed, what he did last season. He batted .317 with 36 homers and 107 RBIs, one year after defecting from Cuba. While the White Sox tied for fourth in the AL in homers, they were just eighth in runs, ninth in batting average and 12th in on-base percentage.
LaRoche, who signed a $25 million, two-year contract, should give them power from the left side. He hit 26 homers and drove in 92 runs for Washington last season. Cabrera, a .301 hitter with Toronto, helps the top of the order.
''I think we're jelling together as a team. Hopefully that translates to wins in April,'' Eaton said.
SALE-ING ALONG: With Sale, Samardzija and Jose Quintana, the White Sox appear strong at the top of the rotation.
Sale made the AL All-Star team for the third time last season while going 12-4 with a 2.17 ERA with 208 strikeouts and 39 walks. Samardzija, acquired from Oakland, moves into the No. 2 spot. With Sale recovering from a broken foot, Samardzija - who grew up a White Sox fan - could wind up starting the opener at Kansas City after pitching the previous two for the Cubs.
CLOSING TIME: Chicago tied for seventh in the majors with 21 blown saves and had the fourth-lowest save percentage (63.2) last season. Robertson, who took over as closer after Mariano Rivera retired, saved 39 games for the New York Yankees last season. Chicago also brought in Zach Duke.
RODON WATCH: Whether he starts the season in the rotation or gets sent down to the minors, expect to see top prospect Carlos Rodon in a White Sox uniform at some point this season. The No. 3 pick in last year's amateur draft, he is on a fast track to the majors after three standout seasons at North Carolina State. Rodon, who made nine minor league appearances in 2014, could start the year in the rotation. If Rodon starts in the minors, veteran Brad Penny could make some early starts.
DETROIT: DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Tigers had barely finished celebrating a fourth straight division title last year when they were dispatched from the playoffs by Baltimore in a Division Series sweep. Then Kansas City - the team the Tigers fought so hard to hold off in the AL Central - rolled to the AL pennant and came within a game of winning the World Series.
It was enough to turn the Tigers into October afterthoughts for the first time in a while, and now it's fair to wonder whether Detroit's best chance to claim baseball's ultimate prize with its current core of stars has already come and gone.
''I'm not worried about what people are saying about us. I'm more worried about how we perform,'' manager Brad Ausmus said. ''I feel like this team is a winning team. This is a team that has an opportunity to win a World Series.''
The Tigers edged Kansas City by one game in the division last year in Ausmus' first season as manager, and their 90-72 record was similar enough to their previous work during this run of postseason appearances, but a three-game sweep at the hands of the Orioles snapped Detroit's streak of three straight trips to the AL Championship Series.
Then the Tigers lost Max Scherzer in the offseason, and it remains to be seen how much longer Miguel Cabrera, Justin Verlander and Victor Martinez can keep this team's run of success going.
Cabrera and Martinez each missed a chunk of the exhibition schedule after offseason surgery. Verlander is coming off a down year and has been displaced as Detroit's opening-day starter by left-hander David Price.
Over the past three seasons, the Tigers have fought off challenges in the division from the Chicago White Sox, Cleveland and Kansas City - but those teams essentially made their bids for first place one at a time. Now all three appear poised to threaten Detroit's reign.
''I think quietly, I've said for the last two or three years, I've said we have the best division in baseball. Nobody really talked about it because there weren't sexy names besides the Tigers, who had won however many straight and been to a couple World Series and had a lot of star power,'' Verlander said. ''The Royals won the pennant last year so, obviously, what I was saying wasn't just hogwash. We see all the teams in the AL quite enough, and I know that these teams are good enough to make our division one of the best in baseball.''
Here are a few things to watch as the Tigers try to make it five division championships in a row:
ON THE MEND: Cabrera had offseason surgery on his right foot and Martinez had an operation to repair his left knee. Their health is crucial, but the Tigers also are hoping for big contributions from shortstop Jose Iglesias and reliever Bruce Rondon, both of whom missed all of 2014 with injuries.
NEW-LOOK ROTATION: Scherzer isn't the only player gone from last year's starting staff. Rick Porcello was traded in a deal that brought Yoenis Cespedes to Detroit, so the Tigers had two openings in their rotation. They filled them by acquiring Shane Greene from the New York Yankees and Alfredo Simon from Cincinnati.
BULLPEN BLUES: Closer Joe Nathan is back after a rocky first season in Detroit. If the Tigers run out of patience with Nathan, Joakim Soria also returns. He was acquired shortly before the trade deadline last year, but his impact was limited, in part because of injury.
EXTRA POWER: J.D. Martinez provided a surprisingly productive bat last year after joining the Tigers, and the trade for Cespedes also gave Detroit some additional pop to supplement Cabrera and Victor Martinez.
NEW ACE?: Price is slated to start on opening day, a sign of just how much the Tigers are leaning on him after Scherzer's departure. He was acquired at the trade deadline last year, and Detroit is hoping the trio of Price, Verlander and Anibal Sanchez will make for a pretty impressive anchor to the pitching staff.

*White Sox-Tigers Preview* ==========================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Chicago (3-5) at Detroit (8-1), 1:08 p.m. EDT

Although Chris Sale might not have a comment on the incident that marred his last start at Comerica Park, manager Robin Ventura insists the Chicago White Sox have moved on.

The left-hander will try to help the White Sox halt the Detroit Tigers' best start in three decades Saturday when he faces them for the first time since his actions caused the benches to clear in September.

"We're here to play baseball," Ventura told MLB's official website. "... Everybody else can scare up whatever they want."

Sale tipped his cap toward center field after striking out Victor Martinez in the third inning of a 6-1 loss in Detroit on Sept. 24, then hit Martinez with a pitch in the sixth and both benches stormed onto the field after the two exchanged words. No punches were thrown, but Sale again pointed into the direction of center.

Martinez was told that the White Sox (3-6) believed he was stealing signs with the help of someone positioned in center field. The designated hitter is 15 for 29 with three homers lifetime off Sale, with that .517 average being by far the best of the 36 players with at least 15 at-bats against him.

"They were claiming that someone with binoculars in center field was giving signs to Victor," Detroit manager Brad Ausmus said after the game. "I think it's a little weak that they would hit him."

The Tigers (9-1) never retaliated while in the midst of a playoff race, which led some to believe the tension would carry into this season. Ventura said he's since talked with Ausmus, and White Sox catcher Tyler Flowers added he isn't interested in getting into another incident with Sale back in Detroit.

"That was the heat of the battle toward the end of a long and competitive season playing against each other, beating each other up," Flowers said. "That was just part of it during that game."

Martinez, battling soreness in his surgically repaired left knee, is expected to start after being rested Friday and relegated to pinch-hitting duties in Pittsburgh earlier this week. He's batted .385 in his last 43 games versus Chicago.

Sale allowed one run and struck out eight over six innings Sunday in a 6-2 victory over Minnesota to win his season debut, which was pushed back due to a foot injury. He's 3-2 with a 1.71 ERA in his last seven starts against Detroit, totaling 65 strikeouts over 52 2-3 innings.

He'll try to prevent the Tigers from starting 10-1 for only the second time in franchise history, with the other coming in 1984 when they last won the World Series. Detroit began this series with a 2-1 victory Friday on Jose Iglesias' walk-off single.

Iglesias is batting .484 to lead the AL, and Miguel Cabrera isn't far behind at .439 after each went 2 for 4. Cabrera, however, went 0 for 9 with seven strikeouts when facing Sale in 2014.

Detroit has totaled just five runs during a three-game winning streak but allowed only one, a second-inning homer to former Tigers outfielder Avisail Garcia on Friday.

The Tigers are 4-0 at home, with one win coming thanks to Anibal Sanchez (1-1, 3.46) throwing six scoreless innings against Minnesota last week. However, the right-hander struggled in Monday's 5-4 loss at Pittsburgh, giving up five runs and eight hits with three homers over 6 1-3 innings.

Sanchez has lost all four of his home starts against Chicago while posting a 5.87 ERA.

Geovany Soto (5 for 10) and Melky Cabrera (11 for 24) have hit well against Sanchez. Adam Eaton is batting .442 over his last 10 games against the Tigers after going 2 for 4 on Friday.
