KEY GAME INFORMATION
LA ANGELS: ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton didn't exactly fit in right away with the Los Angeles Angels after they accepted owner Arte Moreno's lavish free-agent contracts.
Now that both sluggers feel much more comfortable and confident in Orange County, they know it's time the Angels started getting more wins for their money.
The Angels' four-year absence from the playoffs is embarrassing for an organization with a sky-high payroll and equally lofty expectations, but they seem capable of ending the drought if the club's various pieces finally add up properly.
Pujols and Hamilton are full of spring optimism after those disappointing 2013 efforts, while superstar Mike Trout is back for the third full major league campaign in his already remarkable career.
DETROIT: DETROIT (AP) - When Justin Verlander takes the mound for Detroit on opening day, maybe then the Tigers will be able to enjoy a much-needed sense of normalcy.
As an offseason of drama gave way to spring training injuries, it was easy to forget the Tigers still have one of the most talented rosters in baseball. Sure, there have been some early problems for new manager Brad Ausmus to address, Detroit still figures to be the favorite to win its fourth consecutive AL Central title.
''We have a new look this year,'' outfielder Torii Hunter said. ''Little bit more speed and we'll miss the big man, but we'll score some runs.''
The ''big man'' is Prince Fielder, whom the Tigers traded to Texas in a blockbuster deal that brought second baseman Ian Kinsler to Detroit. That move gave the Tigers more financial flexibility, although they weren't all that aggressive in pursuing free agents. Detroit did sign Joe Nathan to replace departed closer Joaquin Benoit.
The Tigers also traded right-hander Doug Fister to Washington.
Lately, the focus has been on right-hander Max Scherzer, who enters his final season before free agency after winning the Cy Young Award in 2013. Negotiations with the Tigers on a long-term deal have stalled.
''They respect where I'm at. I respect where they're at, and we'll revisit this after the season,'' Scherzer said. ''I still want to be in Detroit. I love this clubhouse and everything about it. There's been a history of this team signing free agents so hopefully I'll be a part of that history as well.''
But right now Scherzer's future is uncertain, and with Hunter and Victor Martinez in the final season of their contracts, it's hard to say what Detroit's 2015 roster will look like.
So the Tigers may never have a better chance to win a World Series with this group than right now.

*Angels-Tigers Preview* =======================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Los Angeles (7-8) at Detroit (7-5), 1:08 p.m. EDT

Led by an offense that has gone on a tear over the past week, the Los Angeles Angels continued their dominance over the Detroit Tigers in the series opener.

The Angels could struggle to extend that power surge as they face 2013 AL Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer on Saturday.

C.J. Wilson looks to set a franchise record by winning his 11th straight road decision when Los Angeles goes for an 11th consecutive victory over Detroit.

While the Angels (8-8) have scored 7.4 runs per game with 17 homers over the last seven contests, they've also hit .308 with 10 homers and averaged 6.9 runs during their run against the Tigers (7-6).

Albert Pujols hit his 497th home run Friday and Howie Kendrick added two of his own as Los Angeles pounded 10 of its 13 hits for extra bases in an 11-6 win that extended the longest active streak by one team over another.

Mike Trout added two doubles, leaving him 14 for 33 (.424) over his last seven games. The star outfielder has gone 18 for 45 (.400) with four homers and 15 RBIs during the streak against the Tigers.

Scherzer (0-1, 2.70 ERA) held Los Angeles to two runs and five hits over eight innings Sept. 7, 2012, before the Angels pushed across a run in the ninth for a 3-2 home win to start that streak. He's 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 22 innings over his last three meetings - all during that season.

The right-hander still seeks his first victory of 2014 after giving up four runs while striking out 10 over six innings Sunday in a 5-1 loss at San Diego. The lineup hasn't given Scherzer much help, scoring three runs in his three starts.

"There were times where he was unhittable, there were times when he was human," manager Brad Ausmus said Sunday. "You're going to have days like that, but he certainly kept us in the game."

Wilson (2-1, 3.92), who has allowed three runs over 15 innings to win his last two starts, gave up two runs over seven Sunday while striking out nine in a 14-2 home victory over the New York Mets.

"(Pitching coach Mike) Butcher gave me a tip," Wilson told MLB's official website. "He thought I was opening up a little bit too much with my hips. That worked, and it was off to the races from there."

The left-hander has been in control on the road, going 10-0 with a 3.44 ERA in 13 starts dating to last season. He's trying to become the first Angel to win 11 straight away from home, surpassing Chuck Finley's 10-game run from 1997-1998.

Coincidentally, Scherzer was the last pitcher to win 11 consecutive road decisions from August 2012-August 2013.

Wilson could have a tough time matching that streak since he's 1-3 with a 9.38 ERA in his last five outings - four starts - at Comerica Park, including Game 5 of the 2011 ALCS while with Texas.

Former Angels outfielder Torii Hunter has gone 11 for 33 with two home runs when facing Wilson, while former Texas teammate Ian Kinsler is 8 for 18 with four extra-base hits.

Third baseman David Freese was a late scratch Friday due to tightness in his quad for the Angels, who are already missing outfielders Kole Calhoun and Josh Hamilton.
