KEY GAME INFORMATION
ARIZONA: PHOENIX (AP) - The season had not even started when the Arizona Diamondbacks took a loss.
A day before boarding the plane for their season opener in Australia, the Diamondbacks learned scheduled opening-day starter Patrick Corbin had a partially torn ligament in his pitching elbow and might need season-ending surgery.
Arizona went 21-8 in the young left-hander's starts last season, more than a quarter of the victories for a team that went 81-81 for the second year in a row. The Los Angeles Dodgers celebrated their NL West title by splashing around in Arizona's Chase Field swimming pool.
Arizona retooled during the offseason by adding power (Mark Trumbo), a veteran starter (Bronson Arroyo) and a young closer (Addison Reed). Even with the loss of Corbin, the Diamondbacks feel they have the components to contend for at least a wild-card berth.
''They really want it,'' catcher Miguel Montero said. ''They're hungry for something, and that's a good feeling. I think last year we were a little bit more laid back. This year the guys are hungry, and that's a good thing.''
Trumbo noticed a positive attitude right from the start of spring training.
''That's the personality of the guys here and that plays really well for the course of a long season,'' he said. ''You've got to have guys that play the game right way, but play it with a little bit of a chip on their shoulder and bring it every day.''
COLORADO: DENVER (AP) - Justin Morneau wears Larry Walker's old number and is stepping in for Todd Helton.
Just so it's clear, though: He doesn't expect to be the next Walker and certainly isn't trying to make Colorado Rockies fans forget all about Helton, the everyday first baseman in the Mile High City since 1997.
Morneau can only be himself, a slick fielder who's a four-time All-Star and former AL MVP.
That's not too bad, either.
Still, the Rockies wouldn't mind if Morneau channeled a little bit of those two Colorado icons to help them get back to the postseason. But that's a lot of cleats to fill, especially when it comes to Helton, the franchise's leader in virtually every offensive category.
Morneau's goals are more modest: Slide seamlessly into to this potent lineup, one that includes good friend and reigning NL batting champion Michael Cuddyer, along with Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki.
The 32-year-old Morneau knows the comparisons to Helton are inevitable. No. 17 spent 17 seasons in purple pinstripes, endearing himself to the community. The team will honor Helton on Aug. 17 when they retire his number (although Helton's first send-off will be hard to top, when the club gave him a horse in his last home game).
''From the outside looking in, it looks like I'm coming in to replace him,'' said Morneau, who wears No. 33 because of Walker, his boyhood idol. ''But that's not my thought process. My thought process is to just come in and be me and do what I can do.''
Cuddyer thinks Morneau will fit in just fine.
''If you think about the guy you're replacing, you're already not doing yourself a good service,'' said Cuddyer, who was teammates with Morneau in Minnesota. ''He respects (Helton), but he also understands he has to go out there and be himself.''

*Diamondbacks-Rockies Preview* ==============================

Arizona (62-92) at Colorado (63-91), 4:10 p.m. EDT

Colorado and Arizona have been NL West rivals since 1998. In all that time, the Rockies have never swept four games against the Diamondbacks at home.

Playing their 11th four-game set at Coors Field, the Rockies have a chance to finally pull it off in Sunday's series finale, though Wade Miley stands in their way.

Miley, who is 7-1 in his career against Colorado and 3-0 at Coors, is trying to help the Diamondbacks avoid a sixth straight defeat.

The Rockies (64-91), meanwhile, are on the verge of their first six-game win streak of the season after moving two games in front of Arizona (62-93) for fourth place in the West with a 5-1 victory Saturday.

The Diamondbacks have also dropped nine straight on the road - their longest such slide since a franchise-worst 14 consecutive defeats in 2010. They should like their chances of ending those woes behind Miley (8-11, 4.17 ERA), who has a 3.44 ERA over 11 starts against the Rockies.

The left-hander went 6-0 with a 2.70 ERA in eight starts versus Colorado between 2011-13 before going 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA in three this year. He improved to 3-0 with a 3.86 ERA in three starts in Denver by allowing two runs in eight innings in a 5-3 win April 6.

Miley ended a seven-start winless stretch Monday by allowing one run in seven innings to earn a 6-2 win over San Francisco. He posted a 4.81 ERA over his previous seven outings with Arizona losing all of them.

Michael Cuddyer is 4 for 15 against Miley and was rested Saturday after he had a grand slam and a career-high seven RBIs in Friday's 15-3 rout. Cuddyer is 6 for 10 with six runs scored in this series.

Wilin Rosario was also out of Saturday's lineup but should be back. The catcher is 9 for 19 in his career against Miley and has 12 hits in 17 at-bats with two homers and nine RBIs on this homestand.

Arizona rookie Ender Inciarte is 13 for 36 during a nine-game hitting streak but his club has been awful the last two nights with runners in scoring position.

"We were 0 for 11 today, so that's 1 for 20 the last two days with runners in scoring position," manager Kirk Gibson said Saturday. "We're really struggling in that respect."

The Rockies give the ball to rookie Christian Bergman (2-4, 5.56), who is 2-2 with a 4.71 ERA in five starts since he was activated from the 60-day disabled list Aug. 24. He was tagged for six runs in five-plus innings in Monday's 11-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The right-hander's lone start against the Diamondbacks was a 5-2 loss Aug. 29 in which he gave up one run in 5 1-3 innings and did not factor in the decision.
