Hot spots: First base and right field. Veteran Valencia has the first baseman's job for now, but Dan Vogelbach is the heir apparent who will begin the season at Triple-A. Vogelbach, 24, slimmed down this offseason ' a necessity when you're 6 feet tall, weigh 250 pounds and expect to play your first full major league season ' and might have more weight to lose. Valencia, 32, has never been a full-time first baseman in seven seasons. Haniger is known more for his glove than his bat, but he struggled (.713 OPS) in limited time at a hitter-friendly park in Arizona last year. Safeco Field won't be as kind. Cruz will play right field if Haniger doesn't.
Outlook: General Manager Jerry Dipoto has paired a staff of fly-ball pitchers with three rangy outfielders, an exercise in team-building he once tried with the Angels. Dipoto caused a stir by executing 40 roster transactions during the offseason, but is it possible he didn't do enough? Haniger has never been atop a major league depth chart. Pitchers Gallardo and Smyly are coming off shaky seasons in Baltimore and Tampa Bay, respectively. On paper, the Mariners look like a top-heavy team without much help in the minors if the bottom falls out. That was the case for Dipoto with the Angels too, and sometimes it worked out OK. More often it didn't.
CLEVELAND: 2016: 94-67, first place, AL champions, lost to Chicago Cubs in World Series.
Manager: Terry Francona (fifth season). He's Here: 1B-DH Edwin Encarnacion, OF Austin Jackson, LHP Boone Logan, RHP Carlos Frias, OF Wily Mo Pena, CF Bradley Zimmer, SS Eric Stamets. He's Outta Here: 1B-DH Mike Napoli, OF Coco Crisp, OF Rajai Davis, C Chris Gimenez, 1B Jesus Aguilar, OF Marlon Byrd, RHP Jeff Manship.
Projected lineup: SS Francisco Lindor (.301, 15 HRs, 78 RBIs, Gold Glove, league-leading 15 sac flies in first full MLB season), 2B Jason Kipnis (.275, 23, 82, career-high 156 games), LF Michael Brantley (.231, 0, 7 in 11 games following shoulder surgery; .310, 15, 84, MLB-best 45 doubles, 15 SBs in 2015), DH Edwin Encarnacion (.263, 42, AL-high 142 RBIs for Toronto), 1B Carlos Santana (.259, 34, 87, 99 BBs, 99 Ks), 3B Jose Ramirez (.312, 11, 76, played 4 positions) or Giovanny Urshela (.225, 6, 21 in 81 games for Cleveland), RF Brandon Guyer (.333, 2, 14 in 38 games with Indians; .241, 7, 18 in 63 games with Rays; led majors with 31 HBP) or Lonnie Chisenhall (.286, 8, 57), C Yan Gomes (.167, 9, 34 in 74 games due to shoulder injury), CF Tyler Naquin (.296, 14, 43) or Austin Jackson (.254, 0, 18 in 54 games with White Sox before left knee surgery).
Rotation: RH Corey Kluber (18-9, 3.14 ERA, 227 Ks, third in Cy Young voting), RH Carlos Carrasco (11-8, 3.32, 25 starts due to injuries), RH Danny Salazar (11-6, 3.87, 25 starts, limited in postseason by injury), RH Trevor Bauer (12-8, 4.26, 28 starts, began season in bullpen), RH Josh Tomlin (13-9, 4.40, 5.90 strikeout-to-walk ratio).
Key relievers: LH Andrew Miller (10-1, 1.45, 12 saves, 70 appearances with Yankees and Indians), RH Cody Allen (3-5, 2.51, 32/35 saves), RH Bryan Shaw (2-5, 3.24 in league-high 75 games; 70 games in each of past four seasons), RH Dan Otero (5-1, 1.53, 70 2/3 innings), LH Boone Logan (2-5, 3.69, 66 games with Rockies). Hot Spot: Brantley's Right Shoulder. An All-Star in 2014, Brantley missed out on the fun last season as the Indians won the pennant without him. His return is vital for Cleveland as it tries to make another deep run because he can help provide lineup protection for Encarnacion and stabilize an outfield that was under constant change in 2016. Brantley may not hit for the same extra-base power he had in the past, but he could still offer a high average and excellent defense.
Outlook: With perhaps the league's deepest pitching staff, the Indians are an AL favorite and appear poised to return to the World Series. Last year, they exceeded expectations and built a 3-1 Series lead against the Cubs before losing three straight ' including a dramatic Game 7 at home. One elusive win from the franchise's first championship since 1948. This season, the Indians will try to finish the job. There are injury concerns with Brantley and Kipnis, who won't be ready for the start of the season because of shoulder inflammation. Ramirez could slide over to help fill in at second base. But the addition of Encarnacion finally gives Cleveland the intimidating, middle-of-the-order slugger the club has coveted since the glory days of Jim Thome, Manny Ramirez and Albert Belle. Cleveland is a baseball town again as Indians fans spent on tickets this winter and are rallying around the club the way they did back in the mid-1990s. Lindor is on the cusp of superstardom, and one of the Indians' top priorities should be signing him to a long-term deal while he's still affordable.

Mariners end trip with weekend series in Cleveland

CLEVELAND -- The wounded, road-weary Seattle Mariners will be in Cleveland Friday night to begin a three-game series against the defending American League champion Indians.

For Seattle, the series will be the last leg of a 10-game, 11-day, three-city trip that started in Oakland and Detroit.

The Mariners arrive in Cleveland having already placed nine players on the disabled list this season, six of whom are still on the DL. It had been seven, but on Thursday the Mariners reinstated right-hander Rob Whalen (right shoulder inflammation) and optioned him to Triple-A Tacoma. They also assigned outfielder Leonys Martin outright to Tacoma.

Among those still on Seattle's DL are starting pitchers Felix Hernandez (right shoulder inflammation) and Drew Smyly (left arm flexor strain), plus outfielder Mitch Haniger, who was hitting .338 when he was placed on the DL on Wednesday with a strained right oblique.

Despite their challenging schedule -- they will play 17 of their first 26 games on the road -- and lengthy list of injured players, the Mariners lead the American League in runs scored. They are 3-4 on their trip so far. That includes winning two out of three from the Tigers in Detroit.

After losing 19-9 in their first game in Detroit, the Mariners came back to win 8-0 and 2-1.

"We got outscored in the series, but we'll take it," Seattle manager Scott Servais said after the 2-1 win Thursday. "That's getting back to playing our style of ball. We had a rough night the first night here and they scored some runs against us. We didn't pitch very well. Our guys washed it off, got back out there and won the series, and we need to continue to build momentum on the road. Getting a series here is really big for us."

The Mariners will be facing an Indians team coming off a dramatic and well-played three-game series with the Houston Astros. Cleveland lost the first game 4-2, but won the last two games 7-6 and 4-3, with closer Cody Allen getting saves in both games.

Allen is 5-for-5 in save situations. He had a four-out save Wednesday; in 17 career saves of four or more outs, his ERA is 0.77. Allen came back and got a more conventional three-out save on Thursday. In his nine appearances, this year Allen has pitched nine innings and has 18 strikeouts and one walk.

Allen throws in the mid-90s, with a curveball that can be devastating.

"His curveball right now is as good as we've ever seen it," manager Terry Francona said. "It's not just good, but he's consistent with it."

The pitching matchup Friday will be Cleveland right-hander Carlos Carrasco (2-1, 1.65 ERA) vs. Seattle left-hander Ariel Miranda (1-2, 4.35).

Carrasco is off to a strong start. He ranks sixth in the American League in ERA and has pitched into the sixth inning and allowed two or fewer runs in each of his first four starts. In two starts against Seattle last year, Carrasco was 1-1 with a 3.46 ERA. He has made four career appearances, three starts, against the Mariners and is 2-1 with a 2.79 ERA.

Miranda, who will be making his fifth start of the season, has never faced Cleveland.
