Manager: Clint Hurdle (seventh season)
Who's new? RHP Daniel Hudson, IF Phil Gosselin
Who's gone? IF Sean Rodriguez, OF Matt Joyce, SP Jeff Locke, SP Ryan Vogelsong, RP Neftali Feliz, C Eric Fryer
Projected lineup: 2B Josh Harrison (.283, 4 HR, 59 RBI, 19 SB), 1B Josh Bell (.273, 3, 19), RF Andrew McCutchen (.256, 24, 79), CF Starling Marte (.311, 9, 46, 47 SB), LF Gregory Polanco (.258, 22, 86), 3B Jung-ho Kang (.255, 21, 62), C Francisco Cervelli (.264, 1, 33), SS Jordy Mercer (.256, 11, 59)
Rotation: RH Gerrit Cole (7-10, 3.88 ERA), RH Ivan Nova (12-8, 4.17 for Yankees and Pirates), RH Jameson Taillon (5-4, 3.38), RH Chad Kuhl (5-4, 4.20), RH Drew Hutchison (1-0, 5.25 with Blue Jays and Pirates) or Steven Brault (0-3, 4.86) or Trevor Williams (1-1, 7.82) or Tyler Glasnow (0-2, 4.24)
Key relievers: LH Tony Watson (2-5, 3.06, 15/20 SV), RH Daniel Hudson (3-2, 5.22 with Diamondbacks), LH Felipe Rivero (1-6, 4.09 for Nationals and Pirates), RH Juan Nicasio (10-7, 4.50), LH Antonio Bastardo (3-0, 4.52 with Mets and Pirates), RH Jared Hughes (1-1, 3.03), LH Wade LeBlanc (4-0, 3.77 with Mariners and Pirates)
Hot spots: Rotation and closer. Right-hander Glasnow, 23, is a consensus top-25 prospect who made his major league debut last year. The Pirates would love to see him seize the fifth starter's job in camp, but right-hander Hutchison offers a more experienced option if Glasnow isn't ready. Watson became the closer after Mark Melancon was traded to Washington last summer, but his sinker/slider/changeup mix isn't typical ninth-inning stuff. Keep an eye on Rivero, a 25-year-old lefty acquired in the Melancon trade. His fastball actually gained velocity as last season wore on, eventually touching triple digits. Rivero might begin the season as the set-up man but his ascension to the ninth inning seems inevitable.
Outlook: The Pirates made some interesting tweaks after missing the playoffs for the first time in four years. They made no major trades, signed only two major league free agents (pitchers Nova and Hudson) and revamped Hurdle's coaching staff. They also moved their outfielders around: McCutchen goes from center to right, Marte from left to center, and Polanco from right to left. McCutchen is coming off the worst season of his career. So is ace right-hander Cole. The path back to the playoffs begins with the two stars bouncing back. If the team's other homegrown talent ' Taillon, Glasnow, Bell and Polanco ' continue their evolution, Pittsburgh should return to the postseason in 2017. | | ATLANTA: 2016: 68-93, fifth place
Manager: Brian Snitker (second season)
Who's new? 2B Brandon Phillips, 2B Micah Johnson, C Kurt Suzuki, IF/OF Sean Rodriguez, SP Bartolo Colon, SP R.A. Dickey, SP Jaime Garcia
Who's gone? OF Mallex Smith, C A.J. Pierzynski, RHP Chris Withrow, RHP Ryan Weber
Projected lineup: CF Ender Inciarte (.291, 3 HR, 29 RBI, 16 SB), SS Dansby Swanson (.302, 3, 17), 1B Freddie Freeman (.302, 34, 91), LF Matt Kemp (.280, 12, 39 with Padres and Braves), RF Nick Markakis (.269, 13, 89), 2B Brandon Phillips (.291, 11, 64, 14 SB), 3B Adonis Garcia (.273, 14, 65), C Tyler Flowers (.270, 8, 41)
Rotation: RH Julio Teheran (7-10, 3.21), RH Bartolo Colon (15-8, 3.43 with Mets), LH Jaime Garcia (10-13, 4.67 with Cardinals), RH R.A. Dickey (10-15, 4.46 with Blue Jays), RH Mike Foltynewicz (9-5, 4.31)
Key relievers: RH Jim Johnson (2-6, 3.06 ERA, 20/23 SV), RH Arodys Vizcaino (1-4, 4.42, 10/14 SV), RH Mauricio Cabrera (5-1, 2.82), LH Ian Krol (2-0, 3.18), RH Jose Ramirez (2-2, 3.58), RH Josh Collmenter (1-0, 4.84 with Diamondbacks)
Hot spots: Second base and rotation. Phillips, acquired from the Reds in February, is a placeholder for prospect Ozzie Albies at second base. Albies, 20, won the Double-A Southern League batting title in 2016 and is a potential September call-up at least. The rotation is in a similar state of transition, but it's more complicated. Veterans Teheran, Colon, Dickey and Garcia have jobs for now. Youngsters Foltynewicz, Aaron Blair, Matt Wisler, Lucas Sims and Sean Newcomb are pushing to seize long-term spots.
Outlook: In the inaugural season at SunTrust Park, the Braves will try to crack .500 for the first time since 2013. Their rebuilding work isn't finished, but the front office added about $30 million in salary over the winter. That ought to be enough to make the Braves watchable again. Now, the veterans trying to extend their careers in Atlanta (Colon, Dickey, Phillips, Kemp) are almost as intriguing as the prospects. The sight of 23-year-old shortstop Swanson backing up 40-something pitchers Colon and Dickey could be something special. |
| | After turning 44, Braves' Colon takes aim at Pirates
ATLANTA -- After struggling for the first four weeks of the season, veteran right-hander Bartolo Colon appears to be rounding back into form for the Atlanta Braves. Colon (2-4, 6.38) has lowered his ERA nearly a point in his last two starts and will try to continue that trend when he takes the mound in the finale of a four-game series against Pittsburgh on Thursday. The Pirates will counter with right-hander Ivan Nova (4-3, 2.63). Colon, who celebrated his 44th birthday on Wednesday, was signed to a one-year, free-agent deal as a bridge to give some of the organization's young pitching prospects a chance to mature in the minor leagues. But early results were not pleasant; Colon was 1-4 with a 7.22 ERA after being tagged for eight runs in a loss to Houston on May 9. He bounced back strong. Colon beat Toronto on May 15 when he allowed two earned runs in five innings and gave up one earned run in 4 1/3 innings against the Washington Nationals on May 20, an appearance cut short by a long rain delay. "I'm happy with the direction we're going and I'm happy with the direction we're pitching," Colon said after beating the Blue Jays. "I just have to work my butt off to get us where we need to be." In his career against Pittsburgh, Colon is 5-2 with a 1.94 ERA in nine starts. He did not face the Pirates when the teams played in April. Nova will be making his 10th start of the season. He has been the team's most dependable starter this season and was named National League Player of the Month for April when he went 3-2 with a 1.50 ERA. Nova has pitched at least six innings in each start and has allowed no more than four runs in any stint. In his last start, Nova beat the Phillies. He threw 7 1/3 innings and allowed three runs and nine hits. Nova beat the Braves on April 7 in his first start of the season when he pitched six scoreless innings. He is 1-0 in two career starts against Atlanta and has yet to allow a run in 13 career innings. "We love it when he pitches," Pittsburgh third baseman David Freese said. "He pumps strikes." The Atlanta bullpen will be back to normal on Thursday. The Braves were unable to use Jim Johnson or Arodys Vizcaino on Wednesday, but both will be available in the series finale. Atlanta begins a nine-game road trip on Friday with stops in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Cincinnati. The Braves are expected to send third baseman Adonis Garcia to Triple-A Gwinnett for a rehab start before he is activated from the disabled list, where he has been since May 16 with left Achilles tendinitis. "We just want to make sure he plays and roughs it up and is good the next day," Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said. "We want to make sure he's feeling pretty good." Garcia may play three games with the G-Braves. The Pirates return home Friday to begin a six-game homestand. They will host three-game series against the New York Mets and Arizona. |
