KEY GAME INFORMATION
PHILADELPHIA: PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ryan Howard and his teammates have heard critics say the window has closed for the Philadelphia Phillies.
They just don't believe it.
After a dominant run that included five straight NL East titles, two pennants and the 2008 World Series championship, the Phillies have missed the postseason two consecutive years. They have an aging core of players who've been declining.
Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins and Carlos Ruiz are the remaining regulars from the group that led Philadelphia to its best era of baseball from 2007-11 under former manager Charlie Manuel.
They're determined to make another run.
''We've had a bad couple years and had injuries and all that stuff, but I don't think it's over,'' Howard said. ''People are entitled to their opinions and that's fine, but it's up to us to go out there and show them otherwise and go out and play our game and do what we do.''
General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. refused to start the rebuilding process after the Phillies' first losing season since 2002. Instead, he re-signed Utley and Ruiz and added veteran outfielder Marlon Byrd and right-hander A.J. Burnett in free agency.
If the older players live up to their hefty contracts and younger guys like 2013 All-Star Domonic Brown, Cody Asche and Ben Revere continue to develop, the Phillies should be in contention.
''I think we're positive. We're expecting to win and plan on doing everything we can to ensure that,'' ace lefty Cliff Lee said.
ATLANTA: ATLANTA (AP) - For the Atlanta Braves, spring training turned into a matter of survival.
No wonder they're so eager to get the season going.
The defending NL East champions lost a big chunk of their starting rotation down in Florida: projected opening day starter Kris Medlen and fellow right-hander Brandon Beachy both underwent Tommy John surgery for the second time and are out for the season. Another starter, Mike Minor, will also begin the year on the disabled list as he recovers from a sore shoulder.
But the Braves are nothing if not resourceful. They quickly signed Ervin Santana to a $14.1 million, one-year contract and have every intention of getting back to the playoffs for the fourth time in the last five years.
''We still have a great team,'' closer Craig Kimbrel said. ''It's tough losing two top pitchers. But getting Santana was really big. I want to be closing out division titles and championships and World Series. I think we've still got the group to do it.''
The Braves will have a different look behind the plate after longtime catcher Brian McCann signed with the New York Yankees. But another title in a lackluster division is certainly a possibility, especially if second baseman Dan Uggla and center fielder B.J. Upton bounce back from dismal seasons in which both hit under .200. They showed signs of turning things around in spring training.
''Time will tell,'' general manager Frank Wren said, ''but we really like what we've seen so far.''

*Phillies-Braves Preview* =========================

By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer

Philadelphia (62-74) at Atlanta (72-65), 7:10 p.m. EDT

The sputtering Atlanta Braves lineup started September in the worst possible way by going hitless in their series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Mike Minor's return to form could help alleviate some of the pressure, but it'll still take some offense to even the series Tuesday night at Turner Field.

After being on the wrong end of a combined no-hitter in Monday's 7-0 loss to the Phillies (63-74), the Braves (72-66) have scored one run in three games while going 1 for 17 with runners in scoring position.

"The game of baseball's kind of funny," said manager Fredi Gonzalez, whose club is 1 1/2 games behind Milwaukee for the second NL wild-card spot. "You feel like you've hit a good stride and all of a sudden you go through a stretch where you score one run in 27 innings, and you're lucky enough to win one of those games."

They've scored 20 runs over a 4-5 stretch while Philadelphia has managed 56 during an 8-3 run.

Ben Revere continued to produce for the Phillies with a 2-for-3 day and a career-high five RBIs after entering the game with 15 this season. He's batting .372 against Atlanta in 2014.

Jimmy Rollins also stayed hot with a second straight three-hit effort. The shortstop is batting .386 over his last 11 games with seven multihit performances.

The Philadelphia bullpen followed up Cole Hamels' six hitless innings with one each from Jake Diekman, Ken Giles and Jonathan Papelbon for the 12th no-hitter in franchise history. Over the last 13 games, Phillies relievers have posted a 1.04 ERA.

"It's definitely been a rough go at it this year for our ballclub," Papelbon said. "Something to kind of hang our hat on for the year. Cole has been our bona fide ace for the entire the season, and it's good to preserve those wins for our starters. Today it was preserving a no-hitter."

Minor (6-8, 4.70 ERA) is gaining similar confidence. After substantial struggles, the left-hander's last three games have been encouraging with two wins, a 1.66 ERA and nine hits allowed in 21 2-3 innings. One of those victories came Thursday as he held the New York Mets to a run and four hits in seven innings of a 6-1 final.

"I do feel like I've turned the corner with pitches and hitting spots and attacking hitters," Minor told MLB's official website. "I do feel confident. I don't feel that little guy in the back of my head is saying, 'Don't give up the home run' anymore. I feel like I'm attacking guys and going right after them."

Minor hasn't faced the Phillies this season after going 0-2 with a 2.77 ERA in two starts last year. Ryan Howard is 6 for 15 with three home runs off him lifetime.

Minor will be opposed by Kyle Kendrick, who could present the Braves with an early chance to end their offensive troubles.

Kendrick (7-11, 4.97) is 4-3 in his last 10 starts despite a 6.49 ERA. The right-hander picked up his second straight win Wednesday despite not being particularly impressive, surrendering four runs in six innings of an 8-4 victory over Washington.

He's allowed seven first-inning runs in his last four starts, and his 10.00 ERA in the opening frame is the highest in baseball among pitchers with at least 20 starts.

Kendrick is 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA in three starts against the Braves this season. Justin Upton is 8 for 22 with a pair of home runs lifetime in their matchups.
