KEY GAME INFORMATION
PURDUE: Last season: 30-7, lost to Texas Tech in regional semifinals of the NCAA Tournament.
Nickname: Boilermakers
Coach: Matt Painter
Conference: Big Ten
Who's gone: Forward Vince Edwards, center Isaac Haas, guard Dakota Mathias, guard P.J. Thompson.
Who's back: Guard Carsen Edwards (18.5 points per game) was the leading scorer on a senior-dominated team and became the lead vote-getter on the preseason All-American team after withdrawing from the NBA draft. Guard Nojel Eastern (2.9 points, 2.5 rebounds) showed steady improvement as a freshman and will try to fill the void left by Vince Edwards. Energetic forward Matt Haarms played dominant defense last season (3.2 rebounds, 2.1 blocks in 17.1 minutes) and has spent the summer refining his offensive moves. Guard Ryan Cline (4.0 ppg) has primarily been used as a 3-point specialist off the bench but should play a bigger role in his final college season.
Who's new: Freshman Eric Hunter Jr. and redshirt freshman Aaron Wheeler are expected to make the biggest impact. Hunter, a 6-foot-3 guard, scored nearly 2,600 points in high school, finished his career as the career scoring leader in Marion County (Indianapolis) and should help add the scoring punch Purdue needs. Wheeler is not the Boilermakers prototypical 6-9 forward. Long and slender, he uses length to his advantage and is more athletic than some of his predecessors.
The Skinny: It won't be the same without the four seniors, but the Boilermakers still have scorers, size, depth and defenders. Painter is too good of a coach to accept a significant drop-off, even after losing so many key players. And with Edwards, perhaps the best player in the Big Ten, leading the way, steady improvement could keep Purdue in the Big Ten title mix again.
Expectations: Las Vegas doesn't expect the Boilermakers to be the same. But they're not completely off the bandwagon, either. They've installed Purdue as a 60-1 shot to win the national title, fourth among conference teams behind only the two Michigan schools and rival Indiana.
NEBRASKA: Last season: 22-11, lost in first round of NIT.
Nickname: Cornhuskers.
Coach: Tim Miles.
Conference: Big Ten.
Who's gone: Guard Evan Taylor, center Jordy Tshimanga, guard Anton Gill, center Duby Okeke.
Who's back: Returning All-Big Ten first-team guard James Palmer scored in double figures in 31 of 33 games and his 18.8 points per game in conference play is the most of any returning Big Ten player since 2012-13. Glynn Watson Jr. will be the starting point guard for the fourth straight season. Forward Isaac Copeland averaged 15.8 points on 58 percent shooting in the final nine conference games. Forward Isaiah Roby, at 6-8 and 230 pounds, is a difficult matchup for any opponent. He had four double-doubles in the last eight games.
Who's new: True freshmen Brady Heiman and Amir Harris are in line for significant playing time. The 6-11 Heiman, from Springfield, is the Huskers' first in-state high school scholarship recruit since 2001. Harris, who prepped at St. James School in Hagerstown, Maryland, is a versatile guard who can score and defend. The Huskers sustained a big loss in the preseason when Karrington Davis, a top freshman guard from St. Louis, was lost for the season with an Achilles' injury.
The Skinny: It's been a long time since there has been so much excitement about a Nebraska team entering a season. A fourth-place finish in the Big Ten earned Miles a one-year contract extension. That lukewarm endorsement from athletic director Bill Moos means Miles probably needs to at least match that finish to be back in 2019-20.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have set the odds of Nebraska winning the NCAA Tournament at 200-1, same as fellow Big Ten member Minnesota and lower than in-state rival Creighton (225-1).
PREVIEW
No. 15 Purdue aims to add to Nebraska's woes

No. 15 Purdue beat Nebraska 81-62 when the teams met earlier this season, sending the Cornhuskers to their seventh straight loss.

The Cornhuskers won their next two, but then got blown out at Penn State, 95-71, on Tuesday.

While Nebraska's season has fallen apart, the Cornhuskers (15-12, 5-11 Big Ten) might still have an outside shot of making the NCAA Tournament -- if their late-season stretch is considered a resume-building opportunity and not a further obstacle.

Nebraska plays its final four regular-season games against teams that are currently ranked, so the Cornhuskers will need to make some hay pretty quickly, starting Saturday against the visiting Boilermakers (19-7, 12-3) in Lincoln.

Head coach Tim Miles is in a bit of hot water in his seventh year in Lincoln, having guided the Cornhuskers to just one NCAA appearance. While trying to prepare for Purdue and star guard Carsen Edwards, Miles had to take time out to backtrack on a flip remark he made on a podcast Sunday night.

"If they fire me, they're still going to pay me. ... I'm still a millionaire," Miles said. "So I've got that going for me."

He apologized via Twitter, saying, "Earlier this week, my (sarcastic) attempt at humor during a podcast failed. ... I love Nebraska and its people and hope we are together for a long time to come!"

Nebraska plays Michigan, Michigan State and Iowa after Saturday's game to finish the regular season. The Cornhuskers have lost four straight to ranked opponents.

James Palmer Jr. continues to lead the Cornhuskers at 19.0 points per game, but his shooting percentage has dropped to 36.9 percent. He is shooting 31.8 percent (49 of 154) from 3-point range.

Point guard Glynn Watson Jr. seemed to have shaken a slump during Nebraska's two-game winning streak, scoring 31 points. But he shot 2 of 10 against Penn State and had only one assist.

Purdue has won 13 of 15 games, edging Indiana 48-46 on Tuesday.

Edwards is averaging a Big Ten-best 23.8 points per game, but he has struggled in the Boilermakers' past three games. He has made only 18 of 64 of his field-goal attempts, including 6 of 29 from 3-point range, in that stretch.

Against the Hoosiers, Edwards made 4 of 24 field-goal attempts -- missing all 10 attempts from behind the arc -- and finished with nine points.

"Edwards never really got in a rhythm give Indiana credit, but he's our guy," Purdue coach Matt Painter said. "All great scorers go through periods like this. ...

"You get into situations where you press. He's our guy ... we're always going to come back to him."

The Boilermakers have been able to offset Edwards' recent shooting woes thanks to guard Ryan Cline, who has made 44 of 96 (45.8 percent) of his 3-point attempts in conference play.

Cline helped give the Boilermakers a chance against the Hoosiers, sinking 3 of 8 from beyond the arc en route to a team-high 11 points. Matt Haarms' tip-in with 3.2 seconds left off a miss by Edwards was the difference.
