KEY GAME INFORMATION
MICHIGAN ST: Last season: 30-5, won Big Ten title and lost in second round of NCAA Tournament.
Nickname: Spartans.
Coach: Tom Izzo.
Conference: Big Ten.
Who's gone: Miles Bridges (NBA), Jaren Jackson (NBA), Tum Tum Nairn, Gavin Schilling, Ben Carter.
Who's back: Nick Ward entered his name in the NBA draft before deciding to stay in school for his junior season. The 6-foot-9, 245-pound forward ranked third on the team last season with 12.4 points and first with 7.1 rebounds. Junior point guard Cassius Winston trailed only Bridges in scoring, averaging 12.6 points a game, made a Big Ten-best 49.7 percent of his 3-point shots and had a team-high 6.9 assists per game. Junior shooting guard Joshua Langford averaged 11.7 points and showed the potential to do more, including his 23-point performance against North Carolina.
Who's new: Hall of Fame coach Tom Izzo said at least two freshmen will play right away: Aaron Henry, a 6-6, 210-pound forward, and Foster Loyer, a 6-foot point guard.
The Skinny: The Spartans are No. 10 in the preseason poll because they have a lot of experience, which they hope will help the program advance past the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015 when Izzo reached his seventh Final Four.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have Michigan State as a 35-1 shot win the NCAA Tournament, odds that are tied with rival Michigan and trail 11 schools.
NEBRASKA: Last season: 22-11, lost in first round of NIT.
Nickname: Cornhuskers.
Coach: Tim Miles.
Conference: Big Ten.
Who's gone: Guard Evan Taylor, center Jordy Tshimanga, guard Anton Gill, center Duby Okeke.
Who's back: Returning All-Big Ten first-team guard James Palmer scored in double figures in 31 of 33 games and his 18.8 points per game in conference play is the most of any returning Big Ten player since 2012-13. Glynn Watson Jr. will be the starting point guard for the fourth straight season. Forward Isaac Copeland averaged 15.8 points on 58 percent shooting in the final nine conference games. Forward Isaiah Roby, at 6-8 and 230 pounds, is a difficult matchup for any opponent. He had four double-doubles in the last eight games.
Who's new: True freshmen Brady Heiman and Amir Harris are in line for significant playing time. The 6-11 Heiman, from Springfield, is the Huskers' first in-state high school scholarship recruit since 2001. Harris, who prepped at St. James School in Hagerstown, Maryland, is a versatile guard who can score and defend. The Huskers sustained a big loss in the preseason when Karrington Davis, a top freshman guard from St. Louis, was lost for the season with an Achilles' injury.
The Skinny: It's been a long time since there has been so much excitement about a Nebraska team entering a season. A fourth-place finish in the Big Ten earned Miles a one-year contract extension. That lukewarm endorsement from athletic director Bill Moos means Miles probably needs to at least match that finish to be back in 2019-20.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have set the odds of Nebraska winning the NCAA Tournament at 200-1, same as fellow Big Ten member Minnesota and lower than in-state rival Creighton (225-1).
PREVIEW
Streaks collide as No. 6 Michigan State goes to Nebraska

Nebraska has won 20 straight games at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Michigan State hasn't lost a Big Ten game since last season, winning 18 in a row.

One streak must end when No. 6 Michigan State hits the road to take on Nebraska on Thursday.

"Something's got to give," said Nebraska coach Tim Miles. "I don't think we're going to tie."

The Spartans (15-2, 6-0 Big Ten) have won 10 consecutive games, dating to an overtime loss at Louisville in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Nebraska has overcome a sluggish conference start to win two in a row, including an impressive 66-51 win on at No. 25 Indiana on Monday.

It all leads to what should be one of the more intriguing Big Ten matchups this week, one that Michigan State coach Tom Izzo understands creates plenty of matchup problems for the Spartans. Michigan State will be without junior guard Joshua Langford (ankle) for the fifth straight game and, potentially, junior guard Kyle Ahrens (back) for the second consecutive game.

"As far as Nebraska goes, their big guards will be a challenge for us," Izzo said. "We won't be able to play with two small guards very much."

For Nebraska, James Palmer Jr. is averaging 19.0 points per game. Isaac Copeland Jr. scores 14.3 points per game. Glynn Watson Jr. is at 13.5 and Isaiah Roby averages 11.3.

"(Roby) is a tough matchup, a very athletic kid who's had some moments where he's shown he can play beyond college," Izzo said.

While Michigan State has hardly missed a beat without Langford -- and now Ahrens -- things have been more up and down for the Cornhuskers (13-4, 3-3).

An impressive non-conference season was thrown off by an early Big Ten loss, followed by two more when conference play resumed after the first of the year. Included in that stretch: a two-point defeat on the road against Maryland and a nine-point loss at Iowa.

But a home win over Penn State got Nebraska back on track, and the Huskers validated that with the victory over Indiana. And while the pair of victories keeps the Huskers within striking distance of the Big Ten leaders -- Michigan and Michigan State -- it also helps an NCAA Tournament resume that has been a focus this season after Nebraska went 13-5 in the conference last season and didn't earn a bid.

"We have a little chip on our shoulder," Watson said after the Indiana game. "This game, we came back with a little swag. Just came here, played hard, shots started falling early."

That swag will likely be on display again Thursday as the Cornhuskers return to a building in which they have won 20 in a row.

However, they also understand beating Michigan State will take more than just showing up as the Spartans are one of the most efficient offensive teams in the nation and have the best field-goal percentage defense (36.9) in the Big Ten.

Guard Cassius Winston leads the Spartans in scoring at 17.6 per game.

"I started watching Michigan State (film), turned it off and turned on The Shining," Miles told NCAA.com, "just to make myself feel better."
